Honestly what was shown feels like a let down to me as a long term of fan of Bungie. I'm sure they'll nail the shooting mechanics which will make it worth keeping an eye on but a hero shooter launching with just 6 heroes and 3 maps at potentially a high retail price seems like a pass from me.

Eonjay36d ago

It's not a hero shooter.

I'm not worried about this game at all because from all the videos from people who have been play testing it, they all have the same comment... Bungie is actively seeking criticism making changes. I share your concern about the maps but I'm not really worried about the price as Helldivers 2 is the best $40 I ever spent and honestly we already know that's probably the price of this too.

Also if the beta sucks then I know not to buy it lol but I'm liking what I see so far.

Ethereal36d ago

I second this. This is NOT a hero shooter. Hunt Showdown uses this "hunter"/"Runne r" format and it works well albeit simpler. These types of games, done right, have some really great moment to moment and emergent gameplay that other shooters just don't have.

PanicMechanic35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

All of these multiplayer shooters look the same. Here’s a map. You have gun, shoot gun. Generic. Bland. Rinse repeat formula. Marathon doesn’t do enough to separate itself, it’s going to flop. Boooooooooooring. This game looks like a yawn festival

Sonic188136d ago (Edited 36d ago )

I would have been fine with factions 2 instead of this. Just another extraction shooter that will be played out

S2Killinit35d ago

How do you know? This maybe the next Destiny.

Also, do we know what modes it has already?

kpgs36d ago

I never got into the extraction shooter genre, and while I'm a big fan of Bungie it just doesn't seem like it's something I'd play for the long term. Or at all.
I'm sure their gun-play will be great, but aside from that, nothing appeals to me.

S2Killinit35d ago

To me it looks fantastic, I guess it will come down to gameplay.

JunonZanon36d ago

Gameplay aside, that cinematic trailer was fantastic.

jznrpg36d ago

It looks like a good online PvP shooter. I hope it’s good for the people that want it but I’m done playing these types of PvP games.

anast36d ago

Same, nowadays I prefer PVE if any GaaS game.

For some reason this reminds me of issues artist have brought up regarding AI 'art'. Where literally everything is sourced from other artists. Invluding AI art in games seems like a legal nightmare.

S2Killinit29m ago

If AI is left alone as a free platform similar to what we did with the internet, it wouldnt be an issue. But if we allow companies to patent parts of the i termet as theor own walled gardens, then yes, there would be patent wars and legal nightmare.

As to this, the title is misleading, the game’s art is not plagiarism, someone included a painting(s) that beloned to some artist, in the code.

Eonjay14m ago

Well, do you think companies should be able to include AI generated art in their game if the art is generated using the work from other people? Or should AI art be considered original and the source work be considered inspiration?

Bungie Responds to Unauthorized Use of Art in Marathon

Bungie: "We immediately investigated a concern regarding unauthorized use of artist decals in Marathon and confirmed that a former Bungie artist included these in a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game.

This issue was unknown by our existing art team, and we are still reviewing how this oversight occurred.

We take matters like this very seriously. We have reached out to @4nt1r34l to discuss this issue and are committed to do right by the artist."

"However, one thing Marathon’s been almost universally praised for is its art style."

Eh, I've heard a lot of dislike for the bleak art style. "Universally praised" would mean that hardly anyone dislikes it. This is a pretty dishonest article. I'm personally not a big fan of it either.

PapaBop2d ago

I don't mind the art style so to speak but watching footage, the world looked really bland and lacked detail, reminded me of a mid budget VR game.

Pyrofire951d 20h ago

They said it was universal so you might just unaware just how much you do in fact praise its art style.

Notellin1d 17h ago

I have a hard time finding anyone who is praising the art style. All I see are complaints.

S2Killinit1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

Probably because the boo boys are more vocal. I mean most of us haven’t really played it and its still in development, so how can we praise it? Meanwhile the boo boys don’t need objectivity to criticize a game that has not launched yet.

The art style, I personally like it. But I also need at least a good lore to get into games as I am usually not a multiplayer only kind of gamer.

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 14h ago

I have never seen anyone praise Marathon for its art style, in fact, I think it's one of the things that is universally hated about this game.

Juiceup1d 10h ago

Since the early days of destiny, Bungie has cemented itself as the undisputed King of being dishonest while technically not lying. They simply don't hype things up or make statements without some kind of bs. Their dishonest marketing speak bs has become their entire brand for me.

You have to look at politics to find worse.

What's shocking is the amount that they've copied, thieving ghouls.

franwex2d ago

At least they’re trying to do right and admitted quickly that it was stolen. I give credit when credit is due.

I also dig the new art style, I know most people are mixed.

Notellin1d 17h ago

"I give credit when credit is due."

No you don't and this is an absolute lie. You aren't giving credit to the artist they stole from you're giving credit to the thief. You're a disgusting liar if anything.

Game DOA, this is the closest they will get to mass promotion

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 14h ago

I knew it was DOA from the trailer, yeah, there's no recovering from this, it's Concord 2.0. I dread to see how many more of these Playstation had in production before they changed direction and cancelled the ones that were in the early stages.

The Final ‘Marathon’ Closed Alpha Review: How Did It Go?

In the end, how did the Marathon Closed Alpha go? There are two components to this, how the game felt and how it was received more generally.

Notellin9d ago

It went poorly. We've got another Concord on our hands.
