Nintendo confirms no download codes needed for physical Switch 2 Edition games

In a statement to Vooks, a Nintendo spokesperson has said:

That physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will include the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack all on the same game card (i.e. they are exclusively Nintendo Switch 2 game cards, with no download code). Alternatively, some publishers may release Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as download codes in physical packaging, with no game card.

I wonder if there are any differences at run-time for these Switch 2 Editions given they may not be recompiled binaries (instead operating via emulation or hardware translation layer)...

Profchaos23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Nintendo confirmed a translation layer for backwards compatibility which is why full backward compatibility isn't garunteed for all games but is being worked on.

So not sure about the switch 2 edition games but I would assume translation with optimisation

"That physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will include the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack all on the same game card (i.e. they are exclusively Nintendo Switch 2 game cards, with no download code)"

When the text in the parantheses contradicts the text it's clarifying... Nintendo do Nintendo.

Original Nintendo Switch game is included but it's an exclusively Switch 2 game card because it includes an upgrade pack, ok?

darthv7223d ago

It's rather confusing. That's like saying a ps5 games is really the ps4 game on disc but also has the upgrade files.

Are these game cards playable on both but when inserted in the sw2 then the upgrade kicks in? Because they confirmed there is no difference in the cards themselves except the color. So then why can't they just drop all the smoke and mirrors and either own up that they are sw1 versions or go the extra mile and make them proper sw2 versions and just keep it at that.

QuantumMechanic22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

This is untrue: Switch 2 game cards support faster read rates than Switch 1 game cards.

Also, it appears that the 'Switch 2 Editions' will be distributed on Switch 2 game cards, which cannot be used with a Switch 1 system.

Great news! At least Switch 2 cartridges is a legit physical version.

Nintendo Sues Accessory Maker for Switch 2 Leak

Nintendo is suing Genki, a Japanese accessory maker, for showing a replica of the Nintendo Switch 2 before its official announcement.

MDTunkown15h ago

Won’t be surprised that they will blame Genki for missing the target sales. After all it’s Genki that decided to price the console and games

Christopher14h ago

Aren't they already sold out on preorders in most places?

MDTunkown10h ago

It’s still not hard to find them here in Europe. Amazon fr even until this weekend sold them for 20 euro cheaper than market price.

Profchaos1h ago

US and Japan are sold out Australia is in stock and UK has limited stock in some retailers left

Agent7514h ago

The money that Nintendo lost on Wii U, they made up for on Switch, but still, the loss is still there. All guns blazing with Switch 2 pricing, suing Genki is a 'we need to make money' exercise. Goes without saying that Switch 2 will sell out at launch, but once it settles down, the masses won't pay it.

Profchaos1h ago

Genki abused its position as a partner to drum up hype for their business so they deserve the lawsuit however it's not going to be blamed for missing any targets

Dhika15h ago

They should be renamed to "Suetendo" haha

I was once addicted to soap but now I'm clean, haha

jznrpg15h ago

It’s almost identical to the first Switch. No surprise.

Profchaos1h ago

Pretty clear cut here they were under a partnership agreement here they violated that

I think Wild Heart S is the first failed Switch 2 port. Even Switch 1 can handle how ugly the port is.
