Assassin's Creed Shadows a Big Sales Hit in US, Beaten Only By Monster Hunter Wilds

Ahead of the latest US sales charts, Circana (formerly NPD) analyst Mat Piscatella has given us some insight into how well Assassin's Creed Shadows performed, following its launch on the 20th March.

According to Circana's data, Ubisoft's open world RPG immediately cemented itself amongst the best-selling games of 2025 so far, ranking in the top five for dollar sales. But more impressively, it's the year's second best-selling title in terms of week one dollar sales, beaten only by the mega hit that is Monster Hunter Wilds.

I'm glad when a very good game is doing well and I'm hoping for this game to have a lot more success

coldfire98426d ago

for sure, monster hunter really knocked it out of the park this year didn't it.

chrisx25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Nah, we're talking about assassins creed here, you know, the game you wish and pray so hard to flop but keeps disappointing you and it's doing well. Sorry and cope.

JEECE26d ago

So in the absence of the actual chart, I guess the big takeaway here is that Shadows had bigger week one sales than KCD2, Civ VII, and PGA 2K25?

MrNinosan26d ago

And Split Fiction, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, Avowed, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawai, Two Point Museum and MLB The Show

coldfire98426d ago

The data presented intentionally has tried to obfuscate the the truth. They use clever terms like players, not sales data. Week 1 sales aren't what matter though, any game with a big name like Assassin's creed that has become the "historical" madden or call of duty will sell well for the first week. The people on auto pilot that just follow their programming to consume will buy it. Aside from the buyers that buy out of habit there will be some people that actually put thought into buying the game, those are the people that matter, those are the people that will show whether the game is a success or a failure.

andy8526d ago

It literally says dollar sales

S2Killinit25d ago

But this is talking about sales

thorstein25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

So last week, the amount of players didn't matter, the game was failing. Sales is all that matter because Ubisoft+.

This week, the amount of sales doesn't matter because people are buying it "out of habit" even though it will become the best selling AC of all time. That means there are new players to the IP and Shadows is their first AC game ever.

Holy moly. What's next week's excuse?

Profchaos26d ago

This is good news it's keeping Ubisoft alive for the time being

coldfire98426d ago

If Ubisoft has failed to deliver products that the customer has wanted for multiple years (they have), then why should they remain in business? Circa 2010 ubisoft was goated but lately? I think since 2014 I've purchased 3 ubisoft titles?

Profchaos26d ago

I think this generation has been telling and a hard adjustment for them but I feel like they are getting the message AC shadows has seen them actually polish the game before putting it out and that's a positive step really.

I've purchased a few ubi games on ps5

Watch dogs Legion which was horrible

Far cry 6 I thought it had it's moments but it was quite tedious outside of a few key moments

AC Valhalla it was 5 bucks and I didn't like it much I found it boring but the last AC game I had played black flag was my benchmark for the franchise and it didn't live up to that at all.

I was really interested in outlaws but the game not being on the disc and the comments they made about gamers have to get used to not owning their games made me abandon it.

So overall I think they have made enough mistakes this generation to figure out this path isn't working and turn things around this is the chance and kick in the guys they need IMO

I love ubi of old personally I still have hope they can return I had hoped for a leadership change but this recent 25 percent sale holds them accountable in a way that they previously weren't seriously they ignored shareholders for the past few years now.

jznrpg26d ago

Because things change and companies can correct course. Shadows is doing well and I hope it’s a sign of things to come. I’m not getting my hopes up but I’d prefer more gaming companies succeed, the industry is healthy and grows while keeping people at their jobs and hopefully creating more. I have shit on Ubi but if they start to fix things I’ll gladly give them credit where it’s due and it seems Shadows is at least a step in the right direction.

Zeke6825d ago (Edited 25d ago )

@Coldfire984 I bought and enjoyed every Far Cry and Assassins Creed game since 2014 plus other titles like Ghostrecon Wildlands, The Crewfest Motorfest and many others. Maybe Ubisoft games just ain't for you my friend?! No need to go on a crusade against them just because you don't like gaming it seems?
We are quite a few that ignore the drama and just play their games, because they are good fun games, some even great. I even liked Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar so what more can I say ?
Hate towards a gamedeveloper like you have can't be healthy to be honest.

coldfire98425d ago

@Zeke68 nah I just don't like the copy paste nature of Ubisoft games.

Zeke6825d ago (Edited 25d ago )

@coldfire984 And that's fine. Noone is forcing you to like them, but why the anti-Ubi crap in every sentence?
"The data presented intentionally has tried to obfuscate the the truth", "Week 1 sales aren't what matter though" and my favourite (if people don't think like you they don't count-crap like:) "Aside from the buyers that buy out of habit there will be some people that actually put thought into buying the game, those are the people that matter, those are the people that will show whether the game is a success or a failure."...

You clearly have an agenda against Ubisoft, I don't know if they pissed in your cornflakes or something, but you need move on to games that you like. Spewing that crap just drags us, the other gamers on this site, down with your pessimistic views on Ubi. Go play Astro Bot, COD, Path Of Exile 2 Early Access or whatever instead of being here and complaing on Ubi that you hate, but why are you commenting on them so much if you hate it??!! They wont change their games because of you, you are the one that need to change to be honest. Like it or not.
But let me guess, you don't like those games either? I think you just like to complain, not play actual games, Am I right?
Edit: I played AC Shadows for nearly 50 hours so far. I havent even got into Act 2 rofl!! I do everything ingame and love every second of it, but do you see me in any sportgame thread complaining that those games ain't for me and they should die and burn as a company? No, because that has nothing to do with me, just like you should leave Ubi behind as you clearly over their games since waaaaay back. ;)

Zeke6825d ago

Seems I actually just entered Act 2 as I unlocked Yasuke. That wasn't really obvious ingame to be honest ;)

Took me a little while to get into it but I can't stop playing this now. So much to do and the lore is actually pretty good on the side quests

Christopher26d ago

That stealth lacking prologue was long, but it definitely got better afterwards. I too really like the 'mini hit lists' of side quests. Really good improvement on their part with that.

andy8526d ago

Yep same especially how they follow on so there's actually a story behind it

WelkinCole26d ago

I like slow burners. I tend to enjoy them longer. Witcher 3 was similar in that regard for me

WelkinCole26d ago

Good games should be rewarded and this is such a game

PS5 Best-Seller in the US in March, Assassin's Creed Shadows Debuts in 1st

The PlayStation 5 was once again the best-selling console in the US in March 2025 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the five-week period of March 2 to April 5.

Not surprised by PS5 dominance. It will be interesting to see if sales for ACS drop off the cliff or gradually slide down. UBI would want a gradual slide over many months while staying in top 10 for next 3-6 months.

S2Killinit2d ago

Assassins Shadows is a success whether some people like it or not. They did try their hardest. But in the end facts are facts (not that those matter to some these days). Im just enjoying the crow eating at this point.

neutralgamer19922d ago

It’s not that we want games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows to fail—most of us love gaming and want to see great titles succeed. But when big publishers consistently make anti-consumer decisions, it's important for the community to speak up. If we don't push back, we risk normalizing practices that hurt us as players in the long run.

A lot of people point to the hype around upcoming releases like the Switch 2 and say, “Where’s all the negativity now? It’s already sold out.” But launch-day sellouts don’t tell the whole story. Historically, every new console sells well at launch. The real question is how it performs over time, especially if concerning trends continue.

Look at what Nintendo is doing: they’re charging $90 for a remaster bundled with DLC—content that many would expect to be priced far lower. Meanwhile, Xbox just released Oblivion, nearly remade and packed with all its DLC, for $50. That’s almost half the price for significantly more value. So should we just sit back and accept Nintendo charging almost double, or is it fair to question this pricing strategy?

It’s not just one game—it’s a pattern. Nintendo has been making several anti-consumer moves: physical editions costing more than digital, while also raising the price of digital games. And this isn't happening in isolation. For years, the standard price for a new game was $60. That held steady for over 15 years. Then it jumped to $70. Now, just four years later, we’re seeing $80–$90 price tags depending on the edition, platform, and whether it’s digital or physical.

These things add up. The industry is slowly training consumers to accept higher prices and fewer benefits, and when we don't speak out, we're essentially giving them permission to continue. This isn’t about hating companies or wanting products to fail—it’s about holding the industry accountable so it stays healthy, fair, and respectful of its audience.

We all want to enjoy great games, but we should also care about how they’re made, priced, and delivered. If we don’t ask questions now, we might not like the answers the industry gives us later

"Digital SKUs for March accounted for 70 percent of Xbox Series X|S sales and 50 percent of PlayStation 5 sales. Digital SKUs year-to-date have accounted for 75 percent of Xbox Series X|S sales and 50 percent of PlayStation 5 sales."

Okay this is interesting.

yenevar2d ago

I see a lot of people talking about the 50% digital rate on PS5 but, that needs to be subtracted by the number of disc drives they sell. Also the fact that 15-20 percent of all PS5's are Pro's which are digital only by default so that 50% is heavily skewed.

In truth the vast majority of PS5's have a disc drive attached to them.

It's similar to the discussion about digital sales, where when you look at the total digital on PS5 seems high because so many games release digital only, but when you look at games that have physical releases the split on those games is still 50-60+ percent physical.

The majority of PlayStation owners still want physical games.

Lexreborn22d ago

50% of a game that sells 2 million is still more then 75% that sell 1million. So, it really doesn’t mean much if you don’t know the approximate numbers

yenevar2d ago

Lexreborn2

What is even the point you're trying to make?

Factually as we have seen reported by Sony and other publishers that games that have disc versions still sell 50-60 percent of the total copies physically on PlayStation, the number of total units sold is irrelevant when talking about the percent of individual products.

Kassanova072d ago

That site is so broken still after all these years.

dmonee1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

I wonder if oblivion remastered numbers for april will trounce the sales numbers of assassins creed origins? Hopefully it shows developers what gamers really want in a game. They don’t have to be perfect. They just need to have an identity or a soul. Easiest way to put it, is they need to be fun and entertaining. If it means remastering a 20 year old game to prove that, then so be it

Assassin's Creed Shadows (XS) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Stephen LaGioia: "For my money, Shadows could have been better served stripping away or limiting a few more peripheral gimmicks (e.g. the Hideout and Kuji-Kiri meditations), while adding more combat abilities and nuance, which are a bit thin here. The game mixes in a slurry of elements that both work and don’t quite work from Valhalla, Mirage, and Odyssey, while sprinkling in a few new things that don’t really land as a whole (like scouts used for map details and resources, which need to be replenished). The result is a game that shines brightly in terms of presentation, as well as some combat and progression elements, but overall feels like a “jack of all trades” and a Samurai master of none."
