Silent Hill f's Hinako Can't Be Another James Sunderland After SH2 Remake

It may be widely praised as the best in the series, but Konami has hopefully ignored Silent Hill 2 when developing Silent Hill f.

This is pretty vague. Pretty much every Silent Hill game has main characters who are full of guilt and loss. That’s a core aspect of the franchise, so I don’t think they’ll change it. What they’ll most likely change is the specific tragedy that affected the character. Given the setting and the MC age and gender, I’m betting on the common Japanese horror trope of bullying.

Like, she either ignored or abandoned one of her closest friends, who ended up taking their own life because of the bullying they suffered.

Character with inner demons was SH2 only. But after SH4 non japanese devs took over and made it like the series was all about fighting your own guilt even when it was not the case in SH1, 3 or 4.

Now I get it. The issue is not the traumatized, grief-stricken main character that has been a staple of the franchise for as long as anyone can remember. It’s the particular circumstances of James, who has acted on his trauma and therefore has to physically fight his guilt, as well as the terrible attempts to remake it, like the Butcher and the Bogeyman.

Well, in that case, the moment Konami chose to remake SH2 instead of any of the others, it becomes obvious that this is the direction they are taking the franchise. That is also what we saw in The Short Message and the direction that was heavily implied in P.T.

That is not the truth. The first game is about a man finding his daughter who is the other half of a suffering girl, who was used by a cult to bring forth their god.

The 3rd is the other half of said girl getting dragged back in by the cult.

The 4th is about a room and how a serial killer effect by the cult came to haunt this room.

Vits36d ago

That’s the truth. Other than Henry, every single protagonist in the original four games is a traumatized, grief-stricken mess dealing with their own issues while trying not to die horribly. Then you have SH2, which does the exact same thing, but with the added bonus that James actually did something “bad,” so now he gets singled out like he’s some grand exception. As if the rest of the series wasn’t already about people drowning in guilt, loss, and psychological torment.

The Western Silent Hill games clearly got the memo too, since they all more or less copy that formula. Shattered Memories takes it a step further by making Harry’s death in SH3 another layer of guilt for Heather to carry around.

And if that somehow wasn’t enough, the modern teasers double down on it. The Short Message is literally about a traumatized, grief-stricken girl who kills herself and can’t escape the guilt that led her there. P.T.? Oh yeah, just another traumatized, grief-stricken guy dealing with his guilt for murdering his wife.

So even if we go with this dumb, shallow take that James is special because of his “sin,” Silent Hill has always been about people crushed under the weight of guilt and loss. Literally the vast majority of the series follows this theme, including a fucking playable teaser.

The developers of SHf can do as they please. It is their vision and if we enjoy it too, we buy it.

I don't think it would have started in Japan considering it gives off the impression in previous games that Silent Hill was founded on sacred land to Native Americans with special powers that ended up being corrupted over time, so this whole thing was around a lot longer than whatever happens in the 1960s.

GameGeeked15d ago

Good point! The Native American lore definitely predates the 1960s. Silent Hill was built on land considered sacred long before settlers showed up. This theory just suggests Silent Hill f might be the origin of the curse itself, and what we see in the town later is how that curse evolved over time.

Kojima had it right when it was planned to be "Silent Hills" cause it could've easily been used to imply that multiple cultures around the world had a similar curse.

Scissorman12d ago

I read this really great theory the other day that the main character is actually older and living in Silent Hill, but the town is forcing her to relive the events from her past when she was a young girl in Japan.

I rather they not explain it all. Somethings should be left unknown it's more interesting that way.

Silent Hill f is rated 'Playable' on Steam Deck, but the system requirements don't look promising

Silent Hill f Steam Deck compatibility has been updated to Playable, but we're still worried about its performance based on the requirements.
