Assassin's Creed Shadows Now Surpasses 2 Million Players in Two Days

Assassin's Creed Official Twitter: "2 MILLION PLAYERS!

We’re thrilled to celebrate this incredible milestone!

Assassin's Creed Shadows has now surpassed the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey. Thank you for joining the journey in Feudal Japan!"

Obscure_Observer79d ago

Amazing!

The delay for the extra polishing really paid off!

Shadows runs smooth across all platforms while has one of the most beautiful open worlds, impressive graphics and physics of the current generation.

Congratulations Ubisoft!

FPSRUSSIA79d ago

it sucks People are Hating for no reason Ubisoft is Laughing right now they made a Great game it Players know it.

lukasmain79d ago

They aren't laughing. They're shitting their pants. Everything is riding on this game. They need a lot more than 2 million for this game to be considered a success. With that being said, I do plan on buying this game later on.

TrueRican6979d ago

We not hating we just hate lier

-Foxtrot78d ago

Laughing?

The fact they are saying "X amount of players playing" rather than "X amount of copies sold" is an eye opener...

Just feels like a mask to give the whole thing a positive PR spin in typical Ubisoft fashion.

PanicMechanic78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

So if you critisize game i.e. how it’s a typical bloated Ubisoft map with sync points, which is still the same old formula which got old 10 years ago then you’re “hating the game for no reason” ok. Don’t ask questions, just consume product and wait for the next new game that comes, and just buy it day one man.

Doesn’t look like Shadows changes the formula in a meaningful way. It’s just more Assassins Creed, hate it or love it. Nothing suggests to me that this is some unique masterpiece

The grift (or monitized hate campaign lets be real) was hinged in the idea that we as gamers should be offended by the presense of a virtural black man. The most on point aspect of this was when actual Japanese gamers were perplexed why a bunch of westerners were offended on their behalf. They were like, um, can you please sit down lol. But there in lies the real nature of the grift. its designed to illicit offense and fear from people who otherwise would going on about their lives. Always, ALWAYS, be suspect of people who try to provoke you into hatred or fear. Its always a scam. The vast majority of us are already hip to the game and we are hoping to pull the rest of us up.

Eonjay79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

You k ow, you could have just inboxes me, you didn't have to make an ALT. Stand on your word, no matter if you think your opinion is popular or not. That's what I do.

The Japanese government is playing politics as they all do. I'm talking about actually people who play games. And you know I'm right.

These grifters have you guys really believing that is a controversy to have a black Samurai in a frictional videogame and you actually got offended.

Think about that for a second. And they feed you this dishonest feedback loop to the point where you really can't tell that I'm just stating the obvious. You think I want to attack you over something so meaningless and stupid

They are in your head so much they told you I called you a chud (😆 come on man what the hell does that even mean).

Stop watching that garbage. Form your own opinion. You haven't refuted anything I said, you just repeated something you heard on as Asmongold video.

I respect you hope you respect me too.

PanicMechanic78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

The grift hey. 🤣 ok

“The vast majority of us are already hip to the game” - I love how AC is all of a sudden “hip”😒 again. LOL. The game that everybody needs to defend. Do it. Just buy and don’t ask questions.

I’ll give it a month before the new car smell wears off and people start talking about the problems objectively.

It’s a pity the defence force went on a coffee break when people starting ripping into AC mirage and Valhalla. Ah well it happens, but funny to see

gold_drake78d ago

im not sure u have your facts straight.

most of the criticism that i saw, was from the adhered inaccuracy of history.

i too would have liked if we had more of an accurate retelling.

but i doubt that japanese players were confused by Us westerners, as they were also quite puzzled and down right offended ha

so no, its not because hes black, its because of how they rewrote the most crucial historical aspect of his character and place in it.

dont make this something it is not.

Huey_My_D_Long78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

@golddrake
just the next line, everything else is in general?
So fist fighting the pope in the Vatican is historically accurate? or George Washington becoming King? What about Eivor taking Ivar the boneless?

So many inaccuracies in an historical fiction series you could almost think its historical fiction.
Plus what people are riling about, black man in japan is arguably historical...from the many other depictions.
Its funny alot of people like "go Play Ghost of Tsushima" I did.. loved it, loving AC Shadows now, and I'm gonna pick up Ghost of Yotei later, another game Idjits will be upset over because of ....being near women. Funny funny stuff in these shitty times.

But honestly I'm not here to argue, its just super silly that people play like AC wont sell gangbusters, that the last 3 entries have only increased AC popularity (I Dont count Mirage guys, none of us do)

PS: If you like stealth, they finally brought their stealth mechanics up to date, feels like a good fun challenge.

lol dude made another account to talk shit I'm fucking dead.

PanicMechanic78d ago

Regarding your “monetised hate campaign” comment.

Seeing as Yasuke is accurately depicted in AC Shadows (LMFAO) I’ll be waiting for Japan to present Ubisoft with an honourary award for meticulous representation of Japanese cul - HAHAHAHAHAHAH lmao. O man, imagine Ubisoft getting an award for something like that🤣 an African slave with no record as a legitimate Samurai in recorded history, depicted as a highly skilled and respected Samurai in game slaughtering and brutalising Japanese nationals in the most violent ways possible 🤣 Yea hahahahahaha yea sure, Ubisoft are totally winning historical accuracy awards for that LMAO!!🤣🤣 I’m sure Japan is super duper happy with this Lol!

Eonjay78d ago

Assassin's Creed is a fictional game and there are to many examples to take the historical inaccuracy claim serious.

Next, off all the characters in the AC universe we only ever see claims that a black one is slaughtering anyone.

It is obvious that you are making anexception for him because he is black. And that's lame. And yes it's racist whether you know it or not.

I think the graphics are very impressive. It's been a while since Assassins Creed has had that advantage. Selling well as a result no doubt.

pwnmaster300079d ago

Nice, I love how this game is doing good and certain YouTubers is spinning its doom. They all must be big mad inside lol.

But I do want to ask. 2 million played or 2 million sold? That’s a big difference.
From my understanding according to this site 2 million is a flop, consider its out on all platform.
So what is it? A flop or a success.

Tacoboto79d ago

Dragon Age: The Veilguard peaked with 89k players on Steam release weekend and that was during Halloween...
Shadows had a 60k peak earlier this morning, maybe it'll get a little higher over the weekend.

Soo I don't know and idk if Ubi does either yet because that is definitely not 2 million sold.

LucasRuinedChildhood79d ago

AC's userbase is mainly on consoles though.

Unless loads of people use Ubisoft+ (highly doubt that - I just had to go look up the name of that service), the sales numbers would be mostly in line with player numbers.

jznrpg79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

Steam is just one store. There are other ways to buy games on PC plus there is PS5 and Xbox so it’s not the whole story. Some games sell great on Console and poorly on PC or vice versa as well.

lukasmain79d ago

@ LucasRuined

"the sales numbers would be mostly in line with player numbers"

So why didn't they just tell us the sales numbers? If these numbers were basically the same. It's because what you said is simply not the case, if it was, they would have just waited until 2 milion sold and told us then. Ubisoft and this game are not out of the woods yet and are far from it

LucasRuinedChildhood78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

@lukasmain

Probably because a good amount of AC's sales are still physical and collecting data on physical sales is not as instant as player analytics.

That's why most sales reports always used to be shipped, not sold, no matter how successful the game was.

Btw, I'm not buying this game. I'm just being fair. I'm not saying that it won't end up underperforming overall.

There are services like UbiSoft+ where gamers pay a subscription to play their games day one. It would not count as a sold copy but obviously, at $17.99 a month, after 4 months, the company makes the equivilant of the game itself so its just semantics at this point but accurate to simply state players. Its basically the same thing as when Microsoft sites players instead of copies sold when a game goes to Game Pass. And to be completely honest, UbiSoft were prefer to get 2 million + subscribers than copies sold because after a year, they would make 3x the rev overall.

lukasmain79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

It's not accurate to only state players, if it was, then they would have just said how many sales the game has made. They chose player counts for a reason, because it sounds prettier than the reality. Nothing beats hard sales numbers for single player games. I guarantee you there are a lot of people that would only sub for 1 month, beat the game, and then quit. I was planning on doing that but Ubi Plus is not in Australia.

PanicMechanic78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

“And to be completely honest, UbiSoft were prefer to get 2 million + subscribers than copies sold because after a year, they would make 3x the rev overall.”

O that’s interesting and very, very specific. So what is it now? Is it 2 million new subscribers because of AC Shadows which equates to 3 x the revenue vs 2 million copies sold? Or do sales and subscriptions overlap which results in 3 x more revenue? Are more people subscribing to Ubisoft+ for 4+ months because of AC Shadows at 18 dollars a month? What if people subscribe for a month to finish the game and then drop the sub? Is that factored into your claim of 3 x more revenue? I suppose it’s good now all of a sudden to have AAA single player games put into subscription services day one.

I don’t know, it sounds like you have first hand information on revenue generated from sales vs generated from subs so who am I to question. considering Ubisoft is now in a great financial position based on reports over the last year for the publisher, things must be going great there and revenue from subs must be bulldozing revenue from game sales. Just look at the success of Star Wars Outlaws and how that took Ubisoft to another level

It’s been working for Microsoft and their portfolio of games, with Xbox (bright future brand) being the strongest it’s ever been, and with Ubisoft now being in the strongest position it’s ever been, subscription services for single player games must be the future of this industry

lukasmain79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

2 million sold would be an utter disaster for this game. They better hope this game sells a lot more. Edit: I plan on buying it later this year

INMATEofARKHAM79d ago

It's two million players. If it was 2 million sold they would absolutely say so.

thorstein79d ago

Only on N4G does a game fail because some people hate it. But, then the exact same criteria no longer matters if it is a game they love.

senorfartcushion78d ago

If you think about it, games are the competition of a site like Youtube and Tiktok. So it's only natural for the sites and apps to push anti-gaming videos on a daily basis.

PanicMechanic78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

“Nice, I love how this game is doing good and certain YouTubers is spinning its doom. They all must be big mad inside lol.”

Pathetic (You). Comments like this prove how the discourse around this game is poisoned. You can’t have honest / critical discussions about the game. If you’re critical of aspects = “hahahah You mad” like a 12 year old on the playground

pwnmaster300078d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Lmaoo stay mad. Are you one of those YouTubers spinning shit lol.
You threw a whole tantrum throwing insults off the bat and you want to talk about maturity. You’re such a hypocrite. You think to highly of yourself, your a nobody here and in the real world, get off that shit.

“You can’t have honest / critical discussions about the game. If you’re critical of aspects = “hahahah You mad” like a 12 year old on the playground“

Wake the fuck up, a lot of this hate isn’t about the game and more about agenda.
I’m a gamer not a politician. No matter how good this game is or if it becomes a success, those YouTubers spin it to make it sound bad. That isn’t a discussion, that’s propaganda,

PanicMechanic78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

“ Lmaoo stay mad” - mad at what? How the discourse around this game has been poisoned because people respond to criticism of the game with “ Lmaoo stay mad.”

“You threw a whole tantrum throwing insults off the bat and you want to talk about maturity. You’re such a hypocrite. You think to highly of yourself, you’re a nobody here and in the real world, get off that shit.”

You think TOO highly of yourself.

“You’re a nobody in here and in the real world” - is this now what you’re resorting to? Extremely personal insults? You want to talk about maturity? Then you come here throwing your little playground baby hissy fit because my comments offended you for some reason. YOU’VE made it personal now.

pwnmaster300078d ago (Edited 78d ago )

You call me pathetic and a 12 you’re old for stating that those YouTubers are mad. Not about the game but YouTubers. I’m critical about the YouTubers not the game. You threw shade literally the first word in your comment. The people around you must of been push over your whole life if you think you can talk to people like that and not expect them to comeback.

YOU made it personal initially, now you mad.
You’re a professional victim, you throw insults but can’t take it back and cry like a baby, PMing me with more insults that your to pussy to say it on here. I honestly feel sorry for the people around you if this is how you act on a gaming website. Your a professional victim.
I envy the people that never had to interact with a retard like you irl and online.

PanicMechanic78d ago

Enjoy playing the game. Hope you have fun

Pathetic little baby. For someone who doesnt know anything about me, you sure love to make grand assumptions. but then you had to go and talk about people around me. Keep my loved one's out your fucking whore mouth. Typical little baby playground antics from you, offended because you're a sensitive little pussy - so YOU had to get personal first. Now you're crying like a bitch because im giving you heat back. You dont like me Pm'ing, so i'll give you what you're asking for. Jou boud se gat is skielik kwaad vir jou mond al die kak wat jy praat, jou dom kommon kakhuis houd kop. Sal n groot poes klap vir jou gee, dat jy jou rug sien. You'll be drinking through a straw. Interesting they're using player counts to measure their success.

If they're happy then congrats.

goken79d ago

While 2m players isn’t anything to scoff at.

But it is more customary for sales to be used as the metric for how well a game is doing.

The fact that ubi has decided to change the metric reminds me of xbox one’s enemies killed, bullets fired etc… and we all know how that went.

DivineHand12579d ago

Is there a way to play the game without buying or renting a physical copy?

lukasmain79d ago

Yes. Subbing to Ubisoft Plus. You can play the game on day 1 there.

goken79d ago

suppose you buy a copy, you play it. Then your brother comes along and he gives it a try from the start on his psn account.
That would be 2 players, 1 copy sold no?

Three companies keep showing their true faces and telling us who they are but for some weird reason we refuse to believe them. Even when everything they show just makes their greediness even stands out more

Keep messing with the consumers and keep being greedy. Keep telling your consumers to get comfortable now owning your games and we will. You only have few IP's that gamers care about anyways so

"soon enough tencent will buy you out. They already own 49%. Keep deleting games from gamers libraries and getting sued over it instead of making offline play possible for the crew" it's sad that I believe in 10 cents more than UBI because atleast tencent knows how to run a proper business

These executives can taking millions and bonuses and stock options yet they fire those actually making the games without thinking twice. Gaming has become so greedy that their own greed will be their downfall. Companies like Capcom have realized making good quality games and treat gamers with respect

AC series started with a soul but now it's just a soulless empty option world with icons filling the game map. They make their own games so grindy so that they can see the XP boosters to even the odds. As a gamer in my 40's all I want to know is when did gaming just stop being about Fun and all about greed. Double XP weekends selling cosmetics and dances. I use to be a big sports game guy when I was in my 20's the other day I wanted to play NBA 2k and after doing some deep research I realized the best NBA game was 2k17 and NBA 2k25 at $9.79 I couldn't pull the trigger on that 2k25 for how egregious the micro transactions were. So much of the fun is behind a pay wall

dveio25d ago

True words, buddy.

Q: "So how many units did Shadows sell?"

Ubisoft: "Well, look, we ... it's been a busy week."

neutralgamer199225d ago

For over a decade, the price of video games remained steady. We paid $50, then $60 for full, content-rich experiences. Developers found creative ways to deliver incredible games without charging more. From the PS2 era through the PS4/Xbox One, pricing consistency gave players a sense of value and trust.

But then came the jump to $70 during the PS5 and Xbox Series X launches—justified by "rising development costs." And now, barely four years later, we’re seeing $80 price tags becoming more common for standard editions. At this pace, by the time the next generation of consoles launches around 2027, $90 games could be the norm. And with a behemoth like GTA 6 on the horizon, a $99.99 base price wouldn’t be shocking at all.

Yet we’ve also seen proof that this kind of pricing isn’t necessary for success. Look at the recent launches of Expedition 33 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Both released at $49.99 and have been met with strong sales and positive reception. These games show that there’s still plenty of room for high-quality, mid-budget (AA) titles that offer great value—and gamers are more than willing to support them at fair prices.

But here’s the problem: the big publishers don’t care. If we as consumers keep paying for deluxe editions, early access, and overpriced base games, they’ll keep pushing the limits. They’re not going to back down unless we speak with our wallets—because that’s the only language they listen to. If they see record sales, they’ll take it as validation.

It’s frustrating when these same companies report record-breaking revenue and profits—yet still complain about tariffs, still find excuses to raise prices, and still hand out bigger bonuses to their CEOs. If they’re doing so well financially, why are they passing more of the burden onto players?

It’s because gaming has become the second biggest entertainment market in the world. And with that comes attention from hedge funds, investors, and boardrooms focused on short-term profit, not long-term player trust. To them, your passion is just a revenue stream. They care about quarterly numbers, not the health of the industry or the joy of the experience.

And unless we—as players—take a stand, the greed won’t stop. The monetization will grow, the price hikes will continue, and the soul of gaming will keep slipping away. The choice is ours. We can either keep paying more for less, or we can push back. One purchase—or one refusal to purchase—at a time

dveio25d ago

"And unless we—as players—take a stand, the greed won’t stop."

And that's the tough part about it.

Look at those annual figures showing billions and billions of money being spent on the most ridiculous add-ons, DLCs, pre-release accesses, even pre-orders, digital deluxe crap, etc.

I mean - we've stood together at times. I don't say it didn't happen before.

But within all of our communities there's so much passive aggressive defensiveness.

Look at the debates regarding physical vs digital.

Publishers can't keep a straight face reading our discussions in which many people abandon physical.

Playing straight into the cards of publishers out there.

neutralgamer199224d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Like I said gamers are the biggest issue with gaming. We may united on a issue but as soon as our favorite gaming franchise gets a release we will support it. If there any doubt Mario kart will be one of the best selling games on switch 2?

Things we use to unlock by simply playing a game has not be sold to us as extra content

Rainbowcookie24d ago

I think people arebgetting tired of the formula. We see it in sales. People just want fun again.

neutralgamer199224d ago

I just want games to be fun and not geindy and full of micro transactions

anast24d ago

Even the $130 ultimate editions of UBI games are only a bit less grindy and they still beg people to buy helix coins throughout the whole experience.

It's a travesty what 2K did to NBA 2K.

Ubishit burned so many bridges with fans, releasing filler dreck that was purposefully designed to push you towards micro-trash-actions. It didn't have to be this way, they could have respected us players more, instead of making players waste countless hours of their life just to see stupid "experience points and resources numbers go up" and attempt to profit off us in such a disrespectful way. I stopped supporting them a long time ago. Keep burning bridges, and keep burning your company from within.

S2Killinit24d ago

Which UBI games did that? Im legit asking.

Chocoburger23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

Any game (be it Ubisoft or any other company) with an unnecessary shoe-horned in experience points system, endless resources collection, and a micro-trash-action store that sells you boosters that alleviate the grind.

They do it on purpose to nudge players towards spending more money, and its something I refuse to support. Nearly all modern Ubisoft games have experience points and skill trees these days, not because it makes the games better, but because it can potentially make them more money by exhausting people into giving in and buying boosters.

Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon and more series are offenders of this game design blight.

S2Killinit23d ago

I see. And I agree. I dont like these trends either. Although I dont remember AC having paid upgrades (given that my last one was black flag)
