How do you do worse then your worse gen?
Series X is so much better then x1 but xbox seems to be dying.

They have lost a lot of goodwill. People simply don’t want their console as much anymore. At least not as many people want them as they used to.

Xbox one disastrous launch put xbox back into the 'og xbox vs ps2' momentum. And with no shot in the arm like Halo to move units and revolutionize a genre anymore, they are dead in the water.

__y2jb57d ago

Exactly this. If they could have put out a 10/10 games it could have shifted momentum but unfortunately Xbox has shown zero interest in making great games. They think they can treat a creative industry the same as the Microsoft Office sales dept which is obviously total nonsense.

Let’s not forget, the xbone was a colossal failure compared to the 360.

StormSnooper57d ago

And, even more significantly, the market is much bigger today.

NotoriousWhiz57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

Is it? 160 mil PS2s + 21 million gamecubes + 24 million xbox = 205 million consoles.

101 million Wiis + 87 million ps3s + 85 million xbox 360s = 273 million consoles.

117 million ps4s + 58 million xbox ones + 13 wii us = 188 million consoles

150 million switches + (and counting) 75 million ps5s + (estimated) 30 million xbox series = 255 million consoles

And that's without factoring in the handheld market that no longer exists.

@NotoriousWhiz: interesting that you skip a generation for the Switch even though it is in the same generation as PS4 and Xbox One. Not arguing your point to StormSnooper, just interesting to see that happen.

StormSnooper57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

@NotoriousWhiz

Yes it is,

First, we are still in the middle of current gen. So unless you believe all consoles combined will not sell another 18 million until the end of the generation, then you have indirectly proved that the market is bigger (although I don’t think these numbers necessarily represent the size of the “market” for gaming)*.

*I would say the more accurate size of the market is the number of people playing games anywhere at any point in time, including on last gen consoles, etc, as they are all potential consumers.

In other words, you have correctly included Switch sales, but you should also include any active PS4 and Xbox one consoles as well, minus overlap. So if a PS5 owner also has a PS4 or Switch, it doesn’t count as 2, he/she is still 1 consumer.

All this to say, your numbers don’t really help us with determining the size of todays gaming market.

NotoriousWhiz56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

Fair point, but if the number of consoles don't tell us the size of the market, how can we know that the market is much bigger today?

Regarding the current gen's console count. While I expect it to eventually overtake the PS2 gen, I don't think it'll be by much.

If Microsoft still sees the Xbox console as an important part of their ecosystem, they will need to provide a compelling use case to gamers to choose Xbox over other platforms.

I have said it many times that Microsoft and Xbox should make it possible to boot PC games and Apps from Xbox if they want to remain relevant but we see no action being done to address the drop in console sales.

If you are an experienced gamer and someone comes to you to ask your unbiased opinion as to which console or platform to play on, the likely answer would be Playstation, Nintendo Switch or PC. Xbox cannot be recommended as it is right now except in specific niche situations like better backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 titles, ability to watch movies and TV shows, Built in media player and fully functioning Microsoft Edge browser for accessing streaming sites.
