Holy crap! Just shows how popular these online/mobile games are.

So the major new releases for Square Enix in the past 9 months were both rereleases?

Abriael1955d ago

Uh? Dragon Quest Walk is a new game. Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X had major expansions. None of those are rereleases.

Where did you get that?

PhoenixUp1955d ago

I got it from this report.

“Major releases of console games in the nine-month period ended December 31, 2019 included “DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition” and Nintendo Switch and Xbox One versions of FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster.” Net sales declined versus the same period for the previous year, when a high hurdle was set by the release of a major new title”

I’m aware that FFXIV & DQX expansions helped revenue greatly, but I was referring to standalone releases that Square Enix would consider to be major.

I also know DQW did well, but still this is Square Enix we’re talking about. It says a lot when an AR game is being held up over more traditional releases on consoles.

The point is that those weren't SE's major new releases. They were the biggest releases for single-player console games, which is only one field.

The biggest releases were definitely Shadowbringers and Dragon Quest Walk, both of which are new.

PhoenixUp1955d ago

Compared to all of Square Enix’s other console releases from April 2019-December 2019 they might as well have been Square Enix’s only major standalone releases.

Now with FFVIIR releasing in April instead of March, they’ll even end up being the only major standalone releases for the entire fiscal year.

Props to Square Enix for making bank on MMO & AR titles though. They’ll be profitable for years to come. It’s just that this section of the report I quoted reminded me of that state of Square Enix’s releases in the past 9 months

Guess Deus Ex isnt getting revived anytime soon...

That game majorly underperformed financially that series is sadly dead.

FF14 and DQ10 are both still fantastic but I’m not sure how I feel about DQ Walk being a reason they are successful.
