Craves (Cnet) opinion: "If there's one word that often fits Sony, it's "hubris." SCEA President and CEO Kaz Hirai likes to talk big, but I'm a little worried about what world the head honcho is living in."
The 360 also, is at an almost 50%( half) lower entry price.
The 360 sold 28 Million.
The PS3 sold around roughly 20 million.
Considering the fact that it hasn't even finished it 1ST YEAR in Europe and Australia and everywhere else, except Japan and US.( people forget that). Plus the Price point AND competition. It's selling pretty DAMN well.
You can disagree all you want. I love my Xbox360, it RROD on me only once. But the fact remains that the 360 should have sold, at least 40 million considering every factor listed above. So this means, that the PS3 HAS MORE DEMAND from the public. Also, that a lower price point( remember, reducing the xbox360 another $100 is SUICIDE to MS) for Sony, can happen at any time, and when it happens, you can pretty damn well imagine what will happen. Oh, and HD adaptation is a sure to be phenomenon in the coming periods.
Now, I want to say that sales do not benefit me in anyway. Which is why I always hate Greenberg etc. Sales do not benefit us Gamers directly IN ANY WAY. Especially considering this minual difference in sales.
Because if sales are so important to you, why don't you just throw away your 360 for instance, for a Wii? I mean, they do sell a lot!
Fcuk greenberg, Shane Kim etc. Lies and distortions are USELESS.
--i think you are a bit confused --sales are important for YOUR console of choice, not that you should necessarily adopt the highest selling one --if, for instance, Sony would have sold 40 million by now, try to imagine the benefits for you as a gamer
Well the Playstation brand is still the most widley gamed on brand in the world. Evidence shows that people are still putting the most hours in on the PS2. That is not even including the PS3 or the PSP.
Playstation brand(not just the PS3) still has the most gamers in the world. That is why he says they are industry leaders.
Not to mention they also have more 1st party software developement studios than any other console manufacture.
Well since someone brought up the article lets point out where PS3 was on that list of play times. Right behind the original xbox.. Thats why Sony is no longer market leader.
Let's cut the childish BS.. IF Sony can add up all their console sales why cant Nintendo? Nes, Snes, Gameboy, Gameboy color, DS, N64, GC and Wii... Oh wait they no longer look like the market leader to me... You do not get to add in previous gen sales with current gen hardware sales to try to say you are number one. That's just not how it works. Sony was number 1 but Nintendo outsmarted them with Sony's own business plan and took their market share. Sony was called the market leader because they had roughly 80% of the market.. Today it is more like 30% of the market.
Yeah Sony was great.. Once, but that time has come on gone.Sony fans are getting really pathetic in their attempts to ignore facts. The world isnt going to change how its worked for 30 years just because the only gaming company you support is no longer number 1. To me this attitude just proves the Nielson ratings release correct. PS3 is dominated by the 16 and under crowd.
"Sony fans are getting really pathetic in their attempts to ignore facts"
The irony of this statement, is 360 fanboys (like you), always avoid the fact that Sony sells more on a yearly average than the 360 does.
How is it the 360 is #1 when its yearly sales are less than the PS3?
How is it that the 360 fanboys seem to forget that the failure rate of the 360 was sitting at around 30% for some time and it is quite possible that over 6,000,000 of those '28 million' could be re-purchased consoles from previous owners who had RROD or whatever?
How is the 360 #1 when it is being demolished by the Wii? Why do fanboys conveniently forget the Wii?
Hell why does Microsoft always forget to mention the Wii in its weekly chess thumping tirade from Greenberg? I bet if the 360 managed to surpass the Wii, Greenberg would be on his soapbox saying they are beating the Wii and PS3.
Those are reported losses collected from a third party, over the period of ONE year. Multiply that by 3, for each year that the 360 has been in circulation and throw in a few extra hundred thousand at the beginning of the console's life-cycle when things were particularly bad, and we have a world wide figure of close to 24 million.
If you think that MS doesn't count refurb/ replacement consoles as "shipped" you are delusional. A console shipped, is a console sold as far as either of the Big 3 are concerned.
and when sony do too I suppose you mean. Look at sony's financials and you will see that the ps2 is at 130 million worldwide.
And to the op. My god. You have some good points but some very bad ones. The ps3 been out less than a year in europe? Its getting on for 2 years now.
'There is more demand for the ps3'. No because the 360 is outselling it. I agree there would be if the ps3 cut the price but at this price its not. The 360 has more efffective demand. - Demand that can actually be capitalised on. I want a ferrari but I doubt ferrari will be counting on a student like me for sales.
To your comment about how the xbox 360 should have sold at least 40 million.....you forget my friend, when the 360 launched, ps fanboys were waiting on the ps3, because of course 'next gen starts when sony says so' right? Everyone was lead to believe that when the ps3 launched it would crush the 360 and yeah that's where those 'wait til next year' comments started. The same goes for nintendo fanboys, they were waiting for the wii, so this whole thing about the 360 should have sold this or should have sold that is nonsense. in fact i could turn around and say, the ps3 should have outsold the 360 by now. i mean if i'm going by what kaz was saying and all the hype ps3 was getting. oh yeah, the ps2 guys were supposed to go out and buy a ps3 automatically right. so what happened there? I totally agree with you that the ps3 is selling really good, but that fact that a hand full of games have sold amazing on that console leads me to believe most people are buying it as a blu ray player. that fact that ps3 games are hardly ever on top ten lists...ok ok maybe one or two on the list, but still, it's like what Voiceofreason was saying, where was the ps3 on the playtime list? behind the original xbox. Crap, i can't remember the article otherwise i would put the link, but anyways. what does it tell you that there are 20mil ps3's out there and yet the play time it gets is behind the original xbox? that most people buy it as a blu ray player. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if killzone 2 doesn't sell as well as what every ps fanboy out there is hoping it will. make fun of halo all you want, but lets see killzone 2 sell like that. you know, all sony fanboys, the ones that go out on message boards and make all this fuss and sh!t, ripping people apart if they express a different opinion than you (about killzone in particular), you are all in the minority. the majority of people who bought a ps3, bought it as a blu ray player. yeah yeah rip me apart to. and i'm not saying only ps fanboys go nuts when someone has a different opinion than you because 360 fanboys do the same. i guess what i'm saying is ps fanboys make louder noise over nothing. anyways, Israfel, i think everything i just said speaks to your 'PS3 has more demand from the public' statement. oh just a quick addition to your "Fcuk greenberg, Shane Kim etc. Lies and distortions are USELESS", you forgot to add Kaz dude. That turd is no different.
@ Cayal
"The irony of this statement, is 360 fanboys (like you), always avoid the fact that Sony sells more on a yearly average than the 360 does. How is it the 360 is #1 when its yearly sales are less than the PS3?"
They do? i thought that was just this year? anyways, ps3 is still behind and if they lower the price of the ps3, ms will just do the same for the 360 and we'll be back at where we are now. I really don't think the ps3 will outsell the 360 this gen, but hey, time will tell.
"How is it that the 360 fanboys seem to forget that the failure rate of the 360 was sitting at around 30% for some time and it is quite possible that over 6,000,000 of those '28 million' could be re-purchased consoles from previous owners who had RROD or whatever?"
good statement Cayal. But if I am going by your logic, and your wanting to know out of the 28 million how much of those are repurchased consoles from previous owners? than I would like to know out of the 20 million ps3s out there, how much of those are actually being used to play games vs just to watch blu ray movies. So lets just say, taking into account your statement, there are 12 million actual 360 gamers out there, how much ps3 gamers are out there? hmmmmm i wouldn't be surprised if it was 5 of that 20 million. of course i'm just pulling numbers out of my ass, but npd top ten hardly show a ps3 title on there kinda confirms most people watch movies on the ps3 as opposed to buying and playing games on it. Too bad that there's no way to compare how much gamers there actually are on the ps3. wait, what's that your saying? 'who gives a f*ck, a ps3 sold is a ps3 sold regardless of how it's being used', well i'd say the same thing, a 360 sold is a 360 sold.
anyways, for the rest of your comments about ms forgetting about the wii and if the 360 ever did surpass the wii greenberg would go mental. dude i totally agree with you. but i'm sure kaz would do the same if the ps3 surpassed the 360.
my d1ck is bigger than yours. that's all these comments are. alright i'm outs.
On March 23, 2009 the PS3 will celebrate it's second birthday in Europe. It's been out for 22 month or a year and 10 months in that territory.
Microsoft had no competition it's first year? What about the PS2 which seen it's peek sales in 2005? How about the announced PS3? It's not like people were surprised by the PS3's launch a year later. It was an event that was well publisized for over a year. The Xbox 360 had more than enough competition.
5 million the first year? Shoot me a link for that. Microsoft had reported 6 million sold on their first quarter financials in October. That gave them 2 more months of sales before they hit their first anniversary. The first year total should be pretty close to 8 million which is pretty much what they average per year. In November they reached 25 million which was also their 3rd anniversary.
You state that the Xbox 360 should be at 40 million because the entry price is half of the PS3's at $199. You are aware that drop just occured in September of 2008 aren't you? That's a lot of consoles to sell in just over 3 months time.
Exactly - PS3 fanboys like to claim the 360 had "no competition" for the first year, then they turn around and trumpet "total" PS2, PS3, and PSP sales. 360 was still competing against the PS2 in it's first year.
Sony shipped 140 million as of that time. It is not unreasonable that they are closing in, and will pass, 150 million in the next little while.
I am curious as to what material you are referencing for your claim of 130 million, which has been rendered questionable, based on the information provided by Sony themselves. A link to Sony's current financials would be appreciated, but I'm not sure if they have released their quarterly shipment figures yet. In any event your information sounds incorrect.
sixfab2005 is re-iterating my point in the past. Xbox 360 at its current price is really competing with both PS2 and PS3. Considering they had a failed original Xbox and literally no brand recognition to jump to second place with RROD issues is very impressive.
Sony is third, and if Sony will leap over MS and become second or not will not matter. MS has gotten brand recognition, and entrenched themselves in the market. In that respect, they already won as they are eating Sony's pie as we speak and Nintendo is eating an even bigger piece.
No matter how you look at it, Sony failed no matter if they beat MS or not. None of that should matter to the average gamer though, because both PS3 and MS is on par and will get similar game support. The threat is and always will be the Wii, if you are concerned about support. So far though, it looks like the Wii is the crapware magnet though.
Kaz didn't say the PS3 is the official leader. He said "Sony", meaning PS1/2/PSP/3.
Quote: "Kaz declared in the February issue of Official Playstation Magazine --in the same article he says the Xbox 360 "lacks longevity"--that he believes Sony is the "official industry leader" in the gaming console market. How does he reach this conclusion? After all, the PS3 is in third place, according to data from research firm The NPD Group."
"The irony of this statement, is 360 fanboys (like you), always avoid the fact that Sony sells more on a yearly average than the 360 does. How is it the 360 is #1 when its yearly sales are less than the PS3?"

I am talking yearly average.
360 - 28 / 3 = just over 9 million
PS3 - 20 / 2 = 10 million (and consider the PS3 hasn't been out in all places for 2 years.)
"How is it that the 360 fanboys seem to forget that the failure rate of the 360 was sitting at around 30% for some time and it is quite possible that over 6,000,000 of those '28 million' could be re-purchased consoles from previous owners who had RROD or whatever?"

I didn't mean repurchased consoles from previous owners. I meant people who got RROD (for example) and bought another 360 because warranty ran out or for whatever reason.
My point is that if Microsoft brought out a console that wasn't a disgrace in hardware standards. The sales of the console are going to be considerably less (I don't believe it would be 5,000,000 less either), but sales could be down to 25/26 million and not 28.
"anyways, for the rest of your comments about ms forgetting about the wii and if the 360 ever did surpass the wii greenberg would go mental. dude i totally agree with you. but i'm sure kaz would do the same if the ps3 surpassed the 360."
I'm pretty certain Kaz does it anyway. Just not weekly.
"Well the Playstation brand is still the most widley gamed on brand in the world."
Really>>? even tho nintendo has the "Game and watch". the NES, the SNES, the Gameboy, the Color Gameboy, The Gameboy Advance, The N64, Gamecube, DS, Wii. That's a pretty big statement u just wrote that sounded like u were putting it there as fact. Did u do some research on the subject matter or just ASSUME sony is the most played in the world. Because those gameboys sure sold alot.
I personally could care less who plays what, i just dislike ppl that use ASSUMPTIOn as fact.
"Evidence shows that people are still putting the most hours in on the PS2."
And ppl dis the wii because its basically a ps2 (in their minds at least)......>>>> ironic.
"Playstation brand(not just the PS3) still has the most gamers in the world. That is why he says they are industry leaders."
I dont know about "leaders" i mean nintendo always seem to introduce new ways of playing that get copied, alot. The Handheld got copied by many companys such as sega and atari, and now sony. They also had rumble and an analog stick that got used in unique ways. The D pad is another example, along with shoulder buttons for the snes controller.
Even now for the DS and how they use the touch screen and microphone in new and fun ways. Even motion sencing has been used by sony of recent. So Really u could say nintendo is a pretty good contender for being a industry leader.
I refer to hardware that is still on the market still being supported and still having software created for it. The PS2, PS3 and PSP all fall into this category.
If you add it all up that is 200 million active Playstation branded pieces of hardware sold to consumers as we speak.
Does any other manufacturer even come close to this? No! So don't bring in numbers for hardware that is no longer supported.
A recent Neilson survey in the US (posted on this site) found that a higher average of hours are spent gaming on the PS2 than the 360 and Wii combined.
yeah MS brought the Xbox 360 out to the public with no competition and did sell 5 million units, but that was without competition. when the PS3 finally came in MS and its 360 did have some competition and that was b/c the PS3 was like the perfect system to some people. to most it gave amazing graphics, great games, and free online play. so to some people it really was the best of all consoles. now it was a little pricey but that didn't keep it from selling. now you'll probably go ahead and disagree with me saying that the PS3 sucks and isn't worth it, well you're wrong, no matter who you are. so Sony could be the boss of all consoles or MS could be, we really don't know, but what we do know is that both these companies work there butts off trying to sell, sell, sell, sell, and sell. we'll just have to wait and see who comes out on top really. other than that nobody can say who is better, but that both gaming industries are really good at what they do. i just think the SCEA and CEO need to stop braggin and just do their job, and that job would be keepin every gamer out there satisfied.
"refer to hardware that is still on the market still being supported and still having software created for it. The PS2, PS3 and PSP all fall into this category."
Ok so when the ps2 does stop selling say 2 years (or whatever it will be), does that mean that u will be taking out those numbers of the ps2>>? because then it will just be ps3 and psp. So it will be the most played brand for another 2 years???
So really what ur saying is kinda stupid considering the ps2 had been round since 2000...and i dont care what u say if ur gonna add sales figures from NINE years ago u have to add gameboy advance and gamecube sales into the mix...and besides u can still play both on the ds and wii.
For me they still lead in what they deliver. They still push the boundary in the gaming sector for a price which is still affordable. Sales wise they are doing fairly good, and still, price is the only thing MS is ahead, not even sales wise (that'll be the Wii). But its the most powerful console out there, offers the most features (no, you cannot add a BD player to any of the other consoles!) and is reliable. Enough for me (personally) to accept leadership.
Dear Hirai, with all due respect, you are talking utter garbage. The only way PS3 will ever catch up with, let alone overtake Xbox 360 is if your devs stop churning out old but re-hashed run of the mill games & start producing exclusive innovitive & original titles.
Apart from a tiny handful of games such as LBP/Kilzone 2 the PS3's full gaming potential is still to be realised. You also desperately need to reduce the console price & until these things happen your main rival, Xbox 360 will always offer superior quality, choice & value for money.
The PS3 is a fantastic bit of kit & PS3 fans don't want to hear your BS anymore & deserve to know why in 2009 the AAA title list is still so small yet the console remains so expensive ?
Most of the most wanted exclusive console games for 09 are for the PS3. Take away PC ports and DLC then what's left? How about you make a letter to your console of choice and complain to them about their lack of AAA titles and innovative titles instead. PS3's lineup is looking great and only an ignorant flaming fanboy can't see that.
Resistance had 60 player deathmatches with no frame-rate drops or lag. How can you not call that innovative? Resistance 2 had an in-game 300 foot monster with brilliant graphical detail. How can you not call that innovative? Resistance 2 also had 8 player co-op with a great class system and a huge amount of enemies on screen. How can you not call that innovative?
Things such as the bike-chase and Metal Gear Ray fight in MGS4 were innovative in my opinion.
I suppose by your logic in order for a game to be innovative it must not be a sequel.
Now please name some innovative 360 exclusives..........Wait man there isn't any.............Well there is Gears of War with the cover system- Oh Yeah! I forgot! Gears did not invent the cover system. It was a great old PS2 game called kill.switch.
An in-game monster or lack of lag hardly qualify as innovative. Little big planet on PS3 and Braid on 360 (don't discount it because it's downloadable) are the two most innovative games of 2008. And yes, it is extremely difficult for a sequel to be innovative. A sequel, by definition, is an update or expansion of an existing game.
Lol I think its funny how you just blatantly ignored the part where I said "60 player deathmatches" and "300 ft". Nice way of twisting my words. :D So you don't think a ""console" game that can play 60 player deathmatches is innovative? Really? Please name me one other console game before Resistance 2 that had those numbers. Having a 300ft monster on screen without any frame-rate problems or slow-down is also very impressive. Just stop being in denial and admit you were wrong about Resistance 2 not being innovative. :)
/brainless fanboy joke mode on Cuz psthreezorz is awsum, sony rulzorz and ms is full of the brown thingy that came of animal's ar*es! /brainless fanboy joke mode off
That'a pretty much bold statement. PS3 is doing great although Xbox is a tough competitor. I pretty much like this console war cause it pushes both console manufactures and dev's to push software as far as possible.
you are right but one thing is clear: Why hasn't the Sony/PS3 responded nearly well enough?
It's about time Sony responded in every department because they need to. If change isn't forthcoming the gap will only grow. Xbox 360 are not perfect as we know, but they're ahead & they're hardly going to stand still waiting for Sony to get its act together !
Sony is just disturbed MS is ahead of them. If they could trade positions they would...if.
It's like those nuts in halo or call of duty that come up with excuses as to why their team lost. No it wasn't their poor aiming or your good sniping no way that factored in.
Get a grip on reality kaz old boy you are losing despite the 360 launching first...cry baby excuse #1, despite the gap today in sales between the ps3 and 360. Some how 8 million+ is a small number.
How about the 1 million to 3 million gap in japan between the 360 and ps3. (Shocking)
Even if sony hit the NOS they won't catch xbox 360 this year or 4 years from now.
The only thing worse than this deluded POS of a exec are the brainless farts that actually agree with him. If ps3fags werent such ignorant and annoying shills that spend most of their days on joke news sites, crying and b*tching about how they think the whole world is conspiring against sony, blaming MS for the PS brand downfall and instead actually criticizing their dumbf*ck company of choice for creating an overpriced and underedelivering POS that most 3rd parties, western and japanese, abandoned than probably the current grim ps3 situation could have been radically different. Lol @ sony and their brainless lemmings
Shame on you for calling me a deluded POS exec!!!! I know my console is in last place. I know it is impossible to develop good games for. I know the online is crappy. I know it is way overpriced. I know the blu-ray has an unusually high failure rate. But cmon, I still have feelings you know! Please be more nice in the future.
hey Ken, here's another bubble for ya: this one is dedicated to killzone 2 and the pompous jealous clowns who doubted it and are now looking very very stupid, lol
you're a genius, and the world is slowly realizing what a masterpiece your last baby is.
Dont worry Sir ken the only thing you need to ask these f4ggots is what does the xbox has that the ps3 doesnt. And they will probablly reply its sales are sh1t. Then all you need to say is well why the hell does anyone give a fuk about sales, compare it to something like...just because millions of people love the Jonas Brothers does it makes them better then lets say Vam Halen?..no, it does not. Anyone is is delusional enough to think that the xbox is better then the ps3 is therefore easily affected by advertising, Marketing, and unable to listen to reason.
tell people to buy a consel with no games its not fair
Ps3 much more better with 21 exvlosive in 2009 + (play and have fun with careless of getting overheated and disc damage) is the best choise for every one.
LOL WERE THE ONES BEING BRAINWASHED!!!? How could anyone look at the pros and cons of the PS3 and 360, and yet still think the 360 is better? I will tell you, you are easily affected by media and you are the kind that tries to follow a trend just because the majority of people who dont know how to measure Cost effectiveness of anything. Zomg your sh1tbox is 200 dollars now? Great. Add the harddrive, wireless adapter, battery packs, batteries, Live membership, HDDvd player and your looking at around $660, wheras for the ps3 you can buy it for $400 base price, add the HDMI cord and its $440, psn is free, you recharge the controllers with a usb cord(whos doesnt have usb cords, Built in hardrive which can be replaced with a 500g or 2TB hardrive, built in wifi, O and what does the ps3 have? Built in Blu-ray player, and Oh whats that, HDdvds arent made anymore? well that sucks. And dont tell me Xbox has a better lineup of games, i can name a few that look really good, Halo ODST(as long as its nothing like halo 3 it should be good), ALan wake..And thats where i have to stop because i dont think there is any more. What does ps3 have? Killzone 2, God of war 3, FF13 Versus, The agency, MAG, Secret Rockstar game(Not crappy DLC), and alot more but i think you get the idea.
PS. Of course everything ive written here wont make sense to your nimble minded head but hey..i tried
I find it hilarious how people like you have no problem fudding the PS3 all day long with outright lies and distortions all in an effort to see it fail yet when Sony talks up it's own product you are beside yourself with their arrogance.
The userbase of the [email protected] 360 is false considering out of those 28 million are the same people that had there's broken on many accounts or stolen or had there house on fire and they would buy a new XBox 360 and count them part as the userbase, so I suggest to you, to shut up you retardbox 360 fan since the suckbox 360 is barely outselling the PS3 and Microsoft is just making you think they are!.
assassyn are you a plain retard? 360 was launched a year ahead and its clearly losing its sales advantage, ps3 has THE games of 2009, what does 360 have? halo wars? HAHA.
Losing its sales advantage? PS3 had closed the gap to within 5 million and now sits 8 million behind the second place console.. How exactly are the closing the gap when they are falling behind? Or do your numbers come from Fairy land like most PS3 fans do? Maybe its time to tone down the acid trips long enough to see that reality and what you say do not match up...
Sony has an uphill battle just for second place. We wont even begin to talk about getting them to first because right now that just doesnt seem possible..
