Avowed Review - Too Close To The Sun - Gamespot

Avowed's impactful and satisfying combat is undone by a widely unbalanced upgrade system and an uninteresting story that wastes its potential.

Never really had high hopes for this game since it's first reveal. It's just a game that has been done so much better so many times before.

Old McGroin111d ago

An 8/10 from 60 reviews on Metacritic is a pretty good score.

lukasmain111d ago

Yeah you're right. But there's just some points in certain reviews that are painting a picture that I'm not interested in. So I didn't have high hopes and it's seems I was right. Hopefully others will like it. Might check it out when it's been fully beta tested.

New Vegas also had a divided initial reception, critics said meh but players ... well you know its cult following.
Not saying it'll reach New Vegas level but these RPG games garner their following abit later.

Check anyone not biased and you will see it's a broken junky mess, even saves stop working. It should be a 4 out of 10 max it's that busted.

Profchaos110d ago

To be fair Microsoft pulled the same stunt with starfield they invited reviewers with no real reputation to review it who gave it high scores same happened here

Why did you choose this particular review to post about it? There are other ones that gave this game a better score posted right here on the this site as well. Don't fall for the clickbait stuff. Did you read it?

lukasmain110d ago (Edited 110d ago )

I didn't read it. I watched it and I watched IGN's video review too. It's obviously not click bait. I don't like the gear system from what I've seen of it especially. Too repetitive with enemy types. Exploration is not the best either. There are other reasons that I don't need to explain. Man I really hope you enjoy playing it if you decide to. I'm sure a lot of people will love the game. It does look amazing with some of it's graphics. I wish character models looked better when compared to the other graphics in the game.

Gamingsince1981110d ago

Reaper try the game yourself when you get the chance, it's broken as heck lol, it's got busted quests that can't be finished, saves stop working, it rando crashes often changes areas, but enjoy 😉

Profchaos110d ago

GameSpot is reputable there's lots of 10s for this but you'll have never heard of the reviewer

Profchaos110d ago

It's reveal was cool but it's gameplay reveal not so much

Tacoboto111d ago

So IGN loved the writing but thought everything else was meh, but GameSpot thought the writing was meh and the combat is good?

Ok

LucasRuinedChildhood110d ago (Edited 110d ago )

Gameplay-wise, their opinions are actually quite similar.

GameSpot said that there are often "frustrating slogs" and they strongly dislike the upgrade system. They like the combat but they do have some issues with the overall gameplay, tbf.

IGN liked the core combat. They said that "Fighting with melee weapons and magic feels smoother and more competent than it does in many similar fantasy RPGs" which is pretty much the same as what GameSpot. They said that things like the enemy variety are very poor.

I'm not seeing any big contradiction on gameplay

PhillyDonJawn111d ago

Odd, every other review said the story is the highlight of the game

Si-Fly110d ago

I’ve just been watching a Giant Bomb live stream where they’re waxing lyrical about how fun the combat it 🤷🏼‍♂️😂 I’m glad it’s on GP, I wanna try it for myself.

You can burn down your companions house and they will act like nothing happened...

Netfilx Games. Ugh!

Hehe. I remember when people said the same thing about Sony entering the gaming race back in the 90s. And here we are. 😆

At one point, Avowed would have taught us to use magic with an explosive Elder Scrolls reference

The Morrowind gag is, blessedly, still in the game in a different form.
