thats gotta be quite embarrassing

"thats gotta be quite embarrassing"

Why? MS is making their games available everywhere. The results in console sales are nothing but expected.

Xbox consoles are nothing but another medium reserved to hardcore console players.

I mean, why would casual players be in a rush to buy an Xbox if they can play Xbox games anywhere?

PS5 and the Switch 2 are nothing but new partners to MS cash out.

If Xbox isn´t selling great is because console sales to MS is not all that important anymore.

Microsoft is aiming for maximum profits and sustainability over console war.

They´ll still release new consoles, but just as Nintendo, they´ll not longer be competing with Playstation. Everybody wins.

Meanwhile, Can't wait to play the best console version of Avowed on PS5 Pro.

dveio87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

"MS is making their games available everywhere."

Can WE all please once & for all stop this narrative and agree on unquestionable facts please?

That is:

First things they actually did was putting Redfall, Hellblade 2, Starfield and Indiana Jones exclusively to Xbox. They didn't bring anything "to finally be played everywhere".

All of them were designed multiplatform titles originally, it was even reported that Spencer ordered them to stop working on the PS5 versions. And Hellblade 1 was a multiplatform DNA IP.

Then:

Call of Duty, Fallout & other original 3rd party DNA don't need to be "made multiplatform" - they've always been multiplatform in the first place, nothing changed for anyone by Microsoft "letting them multiplatform" bound to a 10-year contractual agreement.

It's so f'n silly reading this narrative from you Xbox experts out there over and over again.

Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Hi-Fi & now Forza are the first real games Microsoft truly decided to make multiplat.

All other IPs they bought they either EXcluded from other consoles to push X|S. Or simply just let them stay multiplatform, which was inevitable looking at CoD and the revenue it draws on Playstation.

IRetrouk87d ago

You've changed your tune something shocking aint ya🤣

KwietStorm_BLM87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

So you said the embarrassing part out loud. The part you said wouldn't happen. But now "everybody wins." lol

'If Xbox isn´t selling great is because console sales to MS is not all that important anymore.'.

Then:

'They´ll still release new consoles'.

Uh huh?

Obscure_Observer87d ago

"Meanwhile, Can't wait to play the best console version of Avowed on PS5 Pro."

Maybe next year.

Still... It´s really awesome how MS multiplatform approach turned some people who used to hate Xbox games into hyped fans.

I´ll be enjoying Obsidian´s masterpiece in a couple of days!!!

I can´t wait!!! *O_O*

@dveio

"MS is making their games available everywhere."

It´s *THEIR* games!

Those games won´t pay for its development and marketing costs by itself!

MS decided and will make ALL of their games and franchises available everywhere! Including Nintendo consoles, which will benefit the most, since both ABK and Bethesda, for example, haven't released their games for Nintendo consoles in many years!

Most games you mentioned were limited to PC, Xbox and Playstation only. Now, everyone will get to play those games everywhere!

If anything MS will make those franchises more popular among gamers worldwide than ever!

CrashMania87d ago

'If Xbox isn´t selling great is because console sales to MS is not all that important anymore.'

Crazy talk and cope, sales have collapsed due to years of MS dropping the ball. Not important? Where do you think most gamepass subs come from lol.

'Microsoft is aiming for maximum profits and sustainability over console war.'

I actually agree, shame MS choose to hide xbox profit numbers all the time.

Obscure_Observer87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

@CrashMania

"I actually agree, shame MS choose to hide xbox profit numbers all the time."

Profits were bigger than Playstation *before* ABK´s acquisition according to FTC leaked documents. Look it up!

Now with ABK MS is the biggest and most profitable gaming company in the world!

Tencent comes second.

It´s not rocket science, really.

I mean, were you an investor, which company would you invest your money on? The company that release its games for every major platforms and more reaching billions of gamers, or the company which try to keep the games for a limited playerbase?

For those who wants *profits* the answer is quite obvious.

@IRetrouk

"Obscure I said all this shit to you more than once and you laughed at it, now you are using it for your cope, you gotta stop twisting and turning everytime ms make a pivot, it makes you look disingenuous, they are an ea, ubisoft etc now, the war is over bro, pack it up."

No sure what you´re talking about, bro.

The war is over indeed. You can continue and call MS an Ubisoft, EA... etc... I don´t care because the undeniable fact still remains.

Which is; I still own my SX console and I´ll continue and enjoy my Xbox games day one via ultimate Game Pass and beyond whenever MS decides and continue to release new consoles.

The fact that you´ll get to enjoy those games on PS5 or the Switch 2 won´t hurt me or make me lose sleep over it. It´s your money.

Happy gaming.

IRetrouk87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Obscure I said all this shit to you more than once and you laughed at it, now you are using it for your cope, you gotta stop twisting and turning everytime ms make a pivot, it makes you look disingenuous, they are an ea, ubisoft etc now, the war is over bro, pack it up.

You are wrong about the profits, the chart was comparing 3 different things, and wasnt from leaked ftc documents, infact it made that little sense he deleted it lol, what was leaked in the ftc however was phill admitting playstation made more profit, would you like the link? also they are not the biggest gaming company, their revenue still isn't close to playstation or tencent, also haven't made a profit with abk, infact it's been losses for the last couple quarters, do you even read the quarter results?

S2Killinit87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Oh so that is the new spin? The sales have been like this for years(generations really).

Xbox is simply not as big a brand as PlayStation, and losing more relevance with every generation. MS isn’t releasing multiplatform because this was their plan, they are doing it because people don’t want xbox anymore to an extent that makes their ecosystem unsustainable.

Sales are in fact important to MS, so much so that they stopped reporting their numbers to the public.

IRetrouk87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Ofcourse you don't obscure lol, I've been playing on xbox for years, those games were always available to me, the only bonus I get out of all this is I get to play them on my preferred platform with my preferred friends list, I've said this would be ms best move plenty and you have dissagreed plenty too, I'm glad to see you finally see it, happy gaming to you too, genuinely.

Scissorman87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

Console sales 100% matter to Microsoft. 85% of Game Pass subscribers are on console. If those sales dwindle, then the service cannot grow to the margins MS expects it to.

At the start of the start of the current generation, MS was doing backflips when it was revealed that the PS5 wasn't as powerful as the Series X and cost the same amount. MS was certain that with the power advantage, that it would finally be able to best PlayStation. But that wasn't the case. The market turned its back on Xbox, and what we are seeing now is MS in survival mode.

I honestly don't even know why MS would continue to pursue the console space. Perhaps out of fear of alienating it's most vocal and die-hard fans? The mass market however doesn't want an Xbox console. Outside of the US, Xbox isn't even really a part of the conversation.

trez108287d ago

“Microsoft is aiming for maximum profits and sustainability over console war”

Said this as if they had to choose between console war or sustainability when the truth is they were losing the “ war “ and changed directions. Gone is the Xbox console players that used to fight for their consoles and welcome to Microsoft financial experts. Big up to my Atari, Sega fans that just took the L and moved on without turning into said companies spin merchants.

IRetrouk87d ago

Just to be clear, there are 3 months start difference when comparing both full year results, fy 2024 for ms starts in July 2023 and ends in June 2024, sonys fy 2023 starts in April 2023 and ends in March 2024, both cover comparable times, one had 21.5 bill and the other had 28.8, I'll let you guess which is which.
Sonys q3 results for 2024 get published next month, they cover the same period as the xbox results i linked you, like i said, xbox isn't the biggest gaming company, even after spending 80 bill🤷‍♂️

TheCaptainKuchiki87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

The same corny ass argument that we keep hearing from Xtards since gamepass launched. Yet gampass isn't growing AT ALL and console sales are plummeting.🤣
Had they not purchased Berthesda and Activision, their revenue and profits would've looked tragic.

Charal87d ago

« Why? »

You are a living joke, please never change.

dveio87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

@Obscure

You should better tell people that the More Personal Computing segment includes:

• Xbox gaming

But also:

• Windows and Devices, including Windows, comprising Windows OEM licensing (Windows Pro and non-Pro licenses sold through the OEM channel), Windows Internet of Things, and patent licensing; and devices.

• Search and news advertising, comprising Bing (including Copilot), Microsoft News, Microsoft Edge, and third-party affiliates.

https://www.microsoft.com/e...

it is simply not accurate on your behalf to compare the very Playstation division with the More Personal Computing division.

Which once again only underlines even more, unfortunately to the detriment of discussions within the Xbox's own community, what a deliberately obfuscated range of numbers Xbox has become.

1Victor87d ago

@obscured: “If Xbox isn´t selling great is because console sales to MS is not all that important anymore.

.
Sure thing buddy whatever makes you sleep better at night 🤣 I guess in your mind Microsoft created Xbox to be a business partner to Sony and Nintendo 🤦🏿 I guess they spent over $100 billion of dolly buying the biggest publisher and the popular games developers just to be Nintendo and Sony 3RD PARTY PARTNERS 🤣.

andy8587d ago

This was everyone's argument to you ages ago about xbox as a console is redundant as there'd no reason to own one and for some reason you had the opposite view then 🙃

ABizzel187d ago

“PS5 and the Switch 2 are nothing but new partners to MS cash out.”

One thing people sometimes forget is that this work both ways. Console manufactures allegedly take 30% of software sales profits off the top, so Every game MS publishes on these platforms is also directly paying Sony and Nintendo, without them lifting a finger.

But the main concern from Xbox only fans that I’ve seen is that the need for dedicated hardware diminishes when you actively have means to your content elsewhere, and that’s the concern for Xbox fans. I don’t think see MS discontinuing the Xbox Series consoles and just saying we’re done it’s GamePass only and you can now download the app on PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. But, what does that conversation look like after PS6 / SW3 if hardware sales slump even lower.

At some point the investment in R&D for the hardware no longer becomes viable and is better spent elsewhere.

Again I don’t see that happening this generation or next generation, but after that who knows.

Then looking at market trends, MS has to have realized that the majority of it’s audience is okay with the Series S, and that could turn into giving up on the high-end console performance, and instead focusing on a budget friendly option that does just enough, and relies on AI and other tech from AMD / NVIDIA to make the traditional generational leap. We could truly be seeing Xbox’s next console be slightly better than a Series X in raw GPU performance, or even below a PS5 Pro, but instead uses AI to push above, and would gamers be okay with that?

Personally, I see nothing wrong with it, because that’s what’s most likely to work for them a $349 - $399 Series X+. But what about the hardcore Xbox fans IDK.

dveio87d ago

@Obscure

I missed that.

"It´s *THEIR* games!

Those games won´t pay for its development and marketing costs by itself!"

Noone, absolutely noone disagrees that today Microsoft, after they had bought all the 25+ IPs coming from Ninja Theory, Zenimax and ABK, that Microsoft today is legally the owner of all those IPs.

Noone disagrees on that.

And yet while all their development must be funded out of Microsoft's pocket now, because they simply own them legally, this doesn't withdraw the historical facts that NONE of those IPs were originally created by Microsoft's funding.

So, please, here I show you that I or everyone else can agree with you, noone is denying any ownership of Microsoft.

If in turn you could finally agree on the historical fact that "Doom to Microsoft" is unlike what "Ghost of Tsushima" is to Sony.

Unless, metaphorically speaking, you really want to re-shape even Wikipedia's entire collection of how things happened first.

Chevalier87d ago

No need for excuses. Xbox and their games just aren't selling. They haven't had a single breakout hit game in decades. They've never even built a franchise from the ground up to great success either. You couldn't even name a single 10 million seller They've created in the last decade. It's just sad

rippermcrip86d ago

It's funny when you always bring up the company value when you are desperate to try to win an argument.

Yes, we all know the company is bigger.

This isn't an investment site, it's a gaming site.

Obscure_Observer86d ago

@dveio

"And yet while all their development must be funded out of Microsoft's pocket now, because they simply own them legally, this doesn't withdraw the historical facts that NONE of those IPs were originally created by Microsoft's funding."

Every NEW game is a NEW gamble!

The moment Xbox acquired all those publishers and studios all we heard from you guys was how MS would destroy them all!

Now that MS is delivering high quality games from those studios the narrative is reduced to "Oh but it´s not originally an Xbox IP"

If *any* NEW game turn out to be a masterpiece or a turd it´s gonna be under Matt Booty´s watch!

Sony bought 10+ studios in the last five years or so. How many NEW successful IPs they´d delivered again? How many NEW games from those studios?

Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Pentiment, Forza Horizon, Fable, Avowed, South of Midnight, State of Decay 3, Everwild, Towerborne, Contraband, Project Mara, Clockwork Revolution, Project Dragon, Double Fine´s new IP and we heard (via LinkedIn) that Obsidian is working on a new unannounced AAA RPG!

I mean, how many NEW IPS do you need from MS?

Call me an Xbox fanboy deny and deny all you want, but the real and actual fact is that MS is doing a much better job with their recent acquired studios in comparison with what Sony is doing with their own recent acquired ones. Period!

dveio85d ago

@Obscure

I don't disagree with alot of things you write. I really don't.

Every

• first party new IP, emphasis on "new"

you are listing here does absolutely fall into the category what people were missing about the Xbox brand for years now, actually for more than a decade. And you're right - they are finally coming! Still not there for most of them, but they are coming.

But many

• already existing, just as of now first party IP (DOOM, CoD, Fallout, etc., it's 22 in total in my count)

have always been multiplatform anyway & Xbox didn''t get people to be excited by "Look, WE now own them!". It's as simple as that.

And other

• already existing, originally planned as multiplatform titles IP (Hellblade, Starfield, Redfall, Indiana)

were intentionally excluded from Playstation after they were taken over. And why? To push X|S, which is fine. But it's proof they indeed wanted to see if they could turn things around on the exclusive territory. Otherwise they wouldn't have done it.

And, on the other topic I mentioned, please don't compare Microsoft's MPC business segment ( https://www.microsoft.com/e... with Sony's Playstation segment.

It's totally inaccurate to do so.

If you think it IS accurate, then please explain to me or everyone else why you think it's accurate to not look at Xbox gaming numbers (if possible), but instead the whole MPC business segment which does include way more revenue and profits from other products than just Xbox.

LikAChicken87d ago

@gamerRN I'm saying. It feels like people continue to want to argue about which plastic container is better. And I'm also saying when the shoe was on the other foot and 360 was doing well, it was the same back then. I slowly found my way back to this site and the fact that the comment section is still doing the same type of arguments in a different era is sad.

I really hope there are no adult comments talking about console war this and that. It's literally the best way to waste time and look like a child.

Babadook787d ago

"Why? MS is making their games available everywhere. The results in console sales are nothing but expected."

Sweet damage control.

dveio87d ago (Edited 87d ago )

As of November 2024:

"This puts combined sales of the Xbox Series consoles at 25 to 27 million units."

And if we consider X|S arguably didn't even sell 1m in December, then, even if it did sell 1m in December, it would put the X|S at max. 28m sold globally as of December, 31st 2024.

CrashMania87d ago

So vgchartz over tracking it by around 4-5 million units potentially then.

dveio87d ago

Probably.

There were some guys pointing this out actually in the last months. But don't know why they choosed to not touch it.

IRetrouk87d ago

They have always overtracked the xbox lol, site was started by an xbox fan.

Aloymetal87d ago

They always have. They got exposed by non other than AMD back in 2018 when they had their xbox sale numbers around 4-5 mil more than the chips actually made by AMD lol. But they don't care, they continue to shill.
