Little over 10 million until it outsells the PS2.
Less than 4 million until it outsells the DS.

Crazy.

Considering that they've dropped their prediction to 11 million units for the full fiscal year (which means another 1.5 million by march), without the Switch 2 in the way, it's gonna take a while if it even gets there.

It'd have to sell another 8 million with a successor on the market that pretty much does the same things and plays the same games, just better.

The only way I see the Switch getting to 160 million anywhere fast is if the Switch 2 is overpriced.

Eonjay118d ago

Agreed. We have to wait to see if how Nintendo prices the Switch 2 and whether they give a price cut to the OG Switch. I still think it should be able to pass the DS.

Neonridr118d ago

or the Switch gets a discount.

thesoftware730118d ago

Good points, but another way would be to drop the price, which they probably won't do anytime soon.

Since it took PS2 a while to reach 160 million number, even when PS3 was on the market, the Switch has the same potential to mimic that by remaining on the market even after the Switch 2 releases, it may take 2-3 more years, but it would still qualify as the highest selling console.

Abriael118d ago

@thesoftware730 That'd require Nintendo to keep making the thing, which they likely won't, because it'd take manufacturing power off the Switch 2.

originaljohn118d ago

The game boy advanced sold many units for years after the DS released. Will the Switch do the same probably not but the Switch 2 doesn't appear to be launching with a portable only version. The Switch still has plenty of life left if it sells 11 millions units in year 8.

Since the Wii, Nintendo doesn't keep consoles on the market after a successor releases. Once the Switch 2 releases, very likely Nintendo will take Switch off the market.

Neonridr118d ago

They still released Wii software for a while after the Wii U came along, so that's not entirely true.

DodoDojo118d ago (Edited 118d ago )

Wasn't that way with their handhelds, 3DS was pulled 3 years after the Switch released and given the poor sales of the WiiU i can see why they abandoned it as soon as they could.

ZeekQuattro118d ago

The NES, Gameboy's and the DS's all say hi. The Switch will be no different. The Switch is already Nintendo's best software mover. It will no doubt go on to be Nintendo's best selling hardware on top of that. Why in the world would Nintendo rush to abandon it just because its unproven succesor released?

darthv72118d ago

Funny thing... if it DOES outsell the PS2, people will cry foul and say it doesnt count because its a hybrid or a handheld and not a real console. That shouldnt matter, its still something more people will have bought to play games on than any other dedicated gaming device before it.

If they want to discredit its hybrid nature then a percentage of PS2's should be omitted from the tally because people initially bought it for its DVD capabilities more-so than its gaming. Either way... its dumb to try and find ways to discredit the success of something. People bought it because they wanted to, its their choice and no other reasoning is warranted.

Exvalos118d ago

Ps2 is still highest selling console of all time. The switch lite which is a 100% handheld is counted in those numbers

darthv72115d ago

...and you are proving my point (above) exactly.

Wait, now we are labeling the Switch as a console? So what is it, a handheld or a console?

DodoDojo118d ago

Hasn't it always been that way? Theres handheld consoles and home consoles.

CrimsonWing69118d ago

Um it’s always been that… it’s a hybrid if you want to get pedantic.

When I use the switch it’s docked and I play on my TV like a console.

ZeekQuattro118d ago

Wait why are you still confused ? 🤔 It's a hybrid but even before that you have the terms home console and handheld console. If the Switch is both how is it not a console? I'll wait.

Chocoburger118d ago

Its a handheld, simple. Neither a hybrid nor a console, that's just a marketing lie Nintendo used to save face back in 2017 to make it seem like they weren't existing the home console market, when in fact they had done exactly that.

But ultimately, what we label it as, doesn't matter, this device has been extremely successful, even without a single official price drop, that's unheard of in nearly any industry.

Nintentional2118d ago

Look at the hardware overview trailer. Literally the first thing they say is “Nintendo Switch is a home video game console”

Nintentional2118d ago

From the moment Nintendo announced the Switch, they called it a “home video game console.” Go look at the hardware overview trailer. They say it’s a home console you can take on the go. I primarily use mine docked, so mine is barely a handheld. I much prefer playing Nintendo games with a pro controller and on my 75inch oled tv with my bose soundbar.
