Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 review - Eurogamer

This gorgeous medieval RPG continues to be just as prickly, divisive and abrasive as its predecessor.

“…this game is exceedingly stingy with its saves and checkpointing. You're just as likely to die to a random wolf in this game as you are in a full-blown army ambush, potentially undoing hours of painstaking work if you haven't slept in a while or are part-way through a mission quest. It's mean-spirited in the extreme…”

The more I research the save system the less I like it. Dammit, what to do? 🧐

MrNinosan87d ago

There's nothing wrong with the save system.
It saves everytime you sleep, everytime you pick up a new quest, everytime you reach a checkpoint in quests and whenever you chose to save manually by drinking a schnapps.

The Eurogamer dork is obviously just bad at the game and won't put an effort into it. It was clear as a day before that they wasn't going to give this a try.

I played KCD2 for over 200 hours and never had any issues with my save points etc.

P_Bomb87d ago

200hrs? See that’s reassuring. Gotta keep gathering info. I’m very close to buying it but I keep reading these little sticking points that concern me. It’s a world I wanna explore tho!

While the saves work for MrNinosan, and that's great, to act like everyone has the same expectations is wrong. Opinions differ. Calling them names because they differ from your opinion? Not a good argument. I say this as someone who has seen plenty of other folk complain about the save system in the game and notes that one of the most used mods in the first and now second game involves improving save games.

If you are thinking about buying it wait a patch or 2, it's buggy as f. I have no idea why most reviews ignore it.

MrNinosan86d ago

At what part is it buggy?
After 200h on PS5 Pro, there's been 0 game breaking bugs, possibly 2-3 graphical bugs.
What bugs are you talking about, and where do they occur?

Or are you talking about PC-version? If that's the case, games are always buggy based on what setup you play on.

The reviewer is being dramatic.

Early game I was ambushed by some bandits at night during fast travel, and failed the ~50% escape chance. However, after fending off a few sword attacks, I managed to turn tail and run to a small nearby town, where most of the bandits got caught up fighting with the city guard. One bandit managed run past the guards and keep chasing me, but I was able to defeat him in a 1v1 sword fight - getting a few decent pieces of armor in the process, as well as a weapon to sell - before I high-tailed out of there to safety. I was bleeding and had taken a few hits, but nothing a bandage and sleep at the inn couldn't fix. Yes it would have sucked if I died, but in the end I escaped and it was a fun and immersive experience.

The save system is a bit rough at first - saves happen only either once you sleep in bed, during key mission points, or drink a "savior schapps" save game elixir. These save game elixirs cost about 20 gold. That is a lot of money very early game, and still not an insignificant amount of gold towards the end of the early game. But mid-game onwards 20 gold is a very manageable amount of money, and mid-game onwards you'll probably have 8-10 of these elixirs in your inventory at any one time (you can also find these elixirs out in the game world). Also by the end of the early game you will likely have a a default fast travel event escape chance of 70%+, and if you fail that chance you can try to escape on your horse (even a cr*ppy horse will do), so fast travel ambushes are pretty skippable at that point if you want to avoid them.

"your answers have little bearing on anything at all."

Deep sale, other publishers do movie games better.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (XS) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "In keeping with this world, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is like swearing fealty to an inconsistent liege-lord. On the one hand, you're absolutely proud to be a bannerman for what this series' foundation represents – its fusion of realism with game mechanics, the simulative world, and its role-playing depth; on the other hand, you see its mismanaged storytelling and design foibles disrupt those spectacular highs. Nevertheless, Warhorse Studios has made a behemoth of a game that would've made a less-experienced or less-talented team fold under pressure. That much is certain. And though I can't necessarily affix this momentous sequel as a new "gold standard" of the genre, it nonetheless earns your loyalty."

Took a break a couple weeks ago after arriving in Kuttenberg. Then a patch broke a main quest. Hopefully it’s fixed now.

coolbeans38d ago

Damn. Have you tried reporting the issue to Warhorse for some potential workaround?

Even though it'd set you back, perhaps you could load in one of your earlier auto-saves where the main quest wasn't broken. It sucks, but at least it wouldn't be a full reset.

P_Bomb38d ago

They acknowledged it on Twitter. Haven’t read the latest patch notes tho so it might’ve been fixed. Some peeps were rolling back hours of saves! Me, I just took a brief hiatus. I’ll check in on it later tonight.

coolbeans38d ago

Gotcha. Well, fingers crossed that the problem has been rectified.

coolbeans38d ago

That's what annoying to me: its scope, interlocking systems, and so on *should* make it an easy shoe-in. I just don't think it reaches that final hurdle.
