A former PlayStation executive believes Xbox will end up sharing Sega's fate because of its commitment to third-party releases.

Pretty obvious to be fair. My only doubt now is if they will really try to go against steam deck in this next gen because it doesn't seem a battle that they can win

DodoDojo146d ago

I can see an Xbox handheld out selling the Steam Deck. People talk like the Steam Deck is doing better than it actually is, in reality it's only sold 5 million units in 3 years.

Christopher146d ago

Why need an xbox handheld? Just stream from everywhere on any device, play on Steam, and get a Steam Deck to play all PC games than just Xbox games and 'partners'.

VenomUK146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

Make no mistake, this is an absolute failure of the Xbox console platform because of Phil Spencer. And this is a major success of the PlayStation platform. However don’t prematurely arrange a celebration party because in the long run Microsoft will be triumphant as it is a Big Tech company with a three trillion dollar market cap and will have funds to support it, it will survive anything like a cockroach after a nuclear bomb. And the Japanese electronics manufacturer will not be able to weather that storm. PlayStation has won this series of battles against Bill Gates’ baby - but it will lose the war.

Unless…! it can mutate to face the changing marketplace, the demands for play anywhere on anything, and retain its PlayStation interface and store to become a platform that can survive the threat of Steam.

ApocalypseShadow146d ago

Venom, I see Sony having no trouble pivoting to future game demand if it leads to a digital future. Sony went from making software and chips to making their own console, to making streaming possible with that Gaikai purchase back then and with remote play.

They will definitely manage if they go streaming as they already do that too. And, they will have the content that players have bought into already from PSN. It's why Microsoft has had trouble getting PlayStation fans to switch over because gamers already have a catalog of games with PSN and don't want to lose their content. Even buying publishers like Activision had no real effect on Sony.

RauLeCreuset145d ago

Apocalypse

"And, they will have the content that players have bought into already from PSN. It's why Microsoft has had trouble getting PlayStation fans to switch over because gamers already have a catalog of games with PSN and don't want to lose their content."

This is a good point that goes in a direction I don't see often in this debate. Playstation has benefited more from positioning itself to take advantage of the technological shift to software and services than Xbox has. For all of the talk of Xbox playing 5D chess, the tried and true trick of buying up the industry is what's keeping Xbox relevant after they made the mistake of going all in on Game Pass.

crazyCoconuts145d ago

Regarding the battle vs. war, MS' greatest strength was after releasing MS/DOS and becoming the dominant OS on PC, using that dominance to push Windows, Office, and IE through monopolistic behaviors. Those days are gone, and their products are dying across the board in the consumer space. It's not like MS has a history of winning wars - they've been losing then fairly regularly

DodoDojo145d ago

@Chris
I mean Steam Deck is also a unneeded device because of laptops yet there's still a market for it. I'm not saying that an Xbox handheld would see massive sales I just believe that it would outperform the Steam Deck if it's done right and marketed right.

Jingsing145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

Why would you buy an Xbox handheld that can only play Xbox games? When you can buy the other handheld that plays a lot more? This is fundamentally why platform exclusives matter, Xbox has none therefore has no appeal. I'm sure there will be so called "game journalists" That will tell you it is great when it is released because they don't fund any of it but the truth is you are going to pick the handheld which is not locked down if the locked down one has no exclusives.

jznrpg145d ago

What Xbox device sold better than what was already there? They have tried it with every thing. MP3 players, phones, tablets, consoles. So now a handheld is the magic item that finally succeeds?

DodoDojo145d ago

@Jzn
OG Xbox outsold the Dremcast.
Xbox One outsold the WiiU.

And before you state that those systems were flops, I want you to compare sales of those 2 systems to the Steam Decks.

Again I'm just stating that I believe it would outsell the Steam Deck and not saying that it would be a massive success for MS.

VenomUK145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

@ApocalypseShadow To crystallise what I was saying is it is increasingly likely the home gaming industry will shift in some way. I'm sure the PS6 generation will be similar to how this works, but who knows after that. Sony will have to try and make sure its ecosystem remains relevant. But the risk Sony faces is it has finite funds so it cannot afford for PlayStation to have a significant failures. Microsoft has has over a decade of failure with Xbox, but because it has unlimited funds it doesn't matter because there will always be more money for new directions.

They won't have to go against the SD... they will make a device that also supports steam like how the SD can also support Windows. This is a different era of making deals to support a wider range of products / services.

porkChop145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

That's the thing. An Xbox handheld would obviously be a Windows handheld but with Xbox branding and UI. It would support Steam, the Epic Store, the EA app, etc. I don't understand why people keep trying to push this idea that an Xbox handheld would be locked to Xbox console games. That would pose zero benefit, especially when PC games are starting to include graphics settings specifically designed for handhelds.

FinalFantasyFanatic145d ago

I really don't think that's going to be enough, there are plenty of Windows based handheld PCs that can play xbox/Microsoft store games as well as Steam/Epic/Amazon/GOG/Etc... Xbox has much tougher competition than you're probably anticipating, especially when you take Rog Ally/Lenovo Legion Go/Msi Claw/Zotac Zone/etc... Into account. And even most of those brands have multiple handhelds under their name. I don't see how there would be room for Xbox/Microsoft, I don't think they'res enough room for all the handhelds we already have.

Phoenix029145d ago

They only need to make an Xbox OS for the windows handhelds. No need for them to make the hardware, less risk that way.

b00mFargl3145d ago

or perhaps if Xbox evolves into an operating system akin to Steam, installable on compatible PCs or third-party-made Xboxes. It's merely speculation, of course, but a handheld device with improved streaming and latency could be a future possibility.

Same will even happen to Sony and Nintendo someday. Consoles are a thing of the past, present and the next future but it might be over in 10 years.

Microsoft did the right move there.

LG_Fox_Brazil146d ago

Really doubt it, people like to be confortable and gamers who become older value that even more and the home consoles main point is exactly that, turn it on, grab a controller and start to play. No imput lag, no need to have a very fast internet connection, no need to adjust settings on your drives, just play.

The PS5 and the Switch have sold wonders so far and they will very likely keep the good numbers from now on. Even if, by some huge happening in the industry, Sony decides to stop it, which I really doubt, Nintendo will keep the home consoles alive as long as this Earth is still spinning. Home consoles aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Terry_B146d ago

Actually I wish you are right,

but the developments, including Microsofts move and also how more and more Sony Games are getting PC ports now look like a long-time strategy to me that will make their own consoles obsolete someday. I fear TV's will come with Apps that Stream Games ..and do it faster and better than now and will replace consoles completely.

Hopefully I am wrong here.

Terry_B146d ago

lol...a couple of downvotes already before this article was even fully approved.

Yup guessed that will happen, but its a sad truth. The future will be almost completely digital and consoles will become obsolete..replaced by f*king streaming devices.

RauLeCreuset146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

I hate to break up your fatalism and vote counting, but how is what you just described "the same" as abandoning exclusives?

What Layden spoke on was the need for console makers to find the proper balance to preserve the viability of the platform when expanding the audience for 1st party titles.

Edit: I should have added "unless the plan is to transition from the platform to be 3rd party like Sega."

Terry_B146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

@RauLeCreuset exactly because that might be the thing.

First ports to Steam, now to Playstation..sooner or later just Gamepass.

There will be one more Xbox Console and after that its over. /fatalismcommentswaveendsnowin b4-40down votestomorrow ;)

RauLeCreuset146d ago

"Might."

You were upset over receiving down votes before the article is approved. Don't you think you're jumping the gun? Can we for once talk about what Xbox is doing without making it about what PS (or Nintendo) might do? Are we supposed to talk about what PS might do instead of Xbox when Xbox does something and talk about PS again if PS gets around to doing it, whenever that might be?

Slippery slope arguments are considered a logical fallacy for a reason. PS porting all of their titles to PC day and date would still not be the same as what Xbox is doing. PS has not ported all 1st party titles to PC, let alone day and date. There are still points to hit on that slope before declaring they're going to do the same as Xbox.

Xbox is not making the shift because the business model for its 1st party software is failing, Xbox is making the shift because the business model for the entire platform is failing.

Jingsing145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

The reason you are being downvoted is your lack of backbone and apathetic attitude. "Everything is going to be streaming anyway" It sounds like you are already a convert and if you aren't already you would be the first person to fold on everything that is worse for the consumer. I saw the same attitude from people going digital from physical and a lot of misinformation. That being said if people don't hold the line of physical media then that is a problem. I think there are people who think their digital libraries are safe and won't just be converted to a streaming library at the drop of a hat.

You're getting down voted because Sony and Nintendo are selling like consoles like hotcakes and You're assuming that they'll follow Microsoft. One question has Nintendo even followed the other's path? Because it sure doesn't look like it.

146d ago
Terry_B146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

I got a ton of downvotes here too like 5 years ago when I predicted that there will be less and less games on physical media.

Now we had 2024, and have a Playstation 5 Pro released without a version with a disc drive included and indeed less and less games, music and even movies or series being released outside of digital stores or streams.

I get downvotes because people don't want these changes, hell I would downvote myself here for being so negative, maybe fatalistic about this topic if I could.

"Consoles are a thing of the past"

Sony, Nintendo, and Steam aren't seeing declines in console sales. Only one company is. Seems to me like it's over for just one company. If we're following Microsoft, we should have this question whenever Sony moves to day and date release of games on PC. Then we can measure the end of hardware for them from there.

Edit: ***If you quote me, don't quote a half sentence. ***

My comment goes way past ten years since it's been at least 5 years since Microsoft went same day and date release and they've already committed to a next gen hardware. So, I don't know if you know math, but that's going to be way more than 10 years.

I'm not going to take time to quote your whole comment even if my reply applies to your comment. And let's not act like you saying 'over' before 10 years is some sort of unlimited buffer for all years past ten.

Terry_B146d ago

If you quote me, don't quote a half sentence.

I said "Consoles are a thing of the past, present and the next future but it might be over in 10 years."

146d ago
RauLeCreuset146d ago

"If it’s over, why are they making a new console?"

Maybe it seems that way to him because some of the more overly attached fans are so mad about it that they waste their days making soon to be deleted alt accounts to leave soon to be deleted comments like a Reagan era PSA for what happens if you get hooked on "Phil says."

1Victor146d ago

@terry: “Same will even happen to Sony and Nintendo someday.”
.
Technology evolves and the future of video games is VR like it or not.
Microsoft have NEVER innovated any market they got into since their inception, they go in for the money try to buy their way to the top and when they fail run and duck with their Zune tucked between their proverbial legs.

146d ago
rokos146d ago

Maybe.
I believe its what works better for each specific company.
For example PlayStation and Nintendo have a lot of users on their platforms who purchase a great volume of games/DLC/Subscriptions, out of which the platform holder receives a 30% cut from every game sold. In that case a strong platform with a lot of users is required and having (timed) exclusive content (Games/DLC) is a must to keep people buying your hardware basically strength in numbers.
But I can only assume when Microsoft team compared the numbers through they could have realized that releasing their games on all available platforms and running a subscription service would be more profitable for them than reaping the benefits of a closed platform.
Time will tell if having a 'loss leader device' like the PlayStation which means they make very little money from the hardware in order to lock you to the PS Store or the simultaneous release on all available platforms with prioritizing Gamepass would work out better. In my opinion Microsoft would be releasing more Xbox hardware as they are doing with Windows, Surface devices are far from the most popular Windows laptops but they keep making them.

repsahj145d ago

What Microsoft did was not the right move, but that was their only option left to stay relevant. XD

andy85145d ago

Literally no evidence of this. PS are selling the numbers they always have and the Switch is a roaring success. The vast majority of casuals aren't interested in PC gaming they want no hassle and plug and play.

arm71174145d ago

As long as there are rural areas that don't support high bandwidth speeds that won't happen in the next 2 to 3 decades. This isn't streaming music or movies that don't require any interaction or bandwidth that supports low latency while providing stable framerates and high definition visuals.

Not only that but the costs to consumers that will increase to pay for the infrastructure and technology needed to support it. The cloud is a physical data center. As long as there are triple/double A games (especially competitve) there will be a need to have hardware that supports playing them the way the game creators intended.

I think the main reason Xbox is in this predicament is GamePass. It was a terrible idea IMO. Not the lack of consumer interest in consoles. Nintendo and Sony are selling plenty of consoles. Game developers will continue to put their time, effort and money into developing games on consoles because the bulk of their revenue comes from those sales. That is why the big games like GTA 6 continue to lead with console develpoment.

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

and then all the good games that's been cooking
Pragmata, Sands of Time, Saros, Gears E-Day, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalker,
Mortal Shell II, Onimusha, Marvel1943: Rise of Hydra
current-gen only Infinity Ward's CoD, Duskbloods
+ My guess: Wolverine, Exodus, Mudang, Crimson Desert, Clockwork etc ...
~ seems like it might get too stacked

Flight simulator
Hell Blade 2
Minecraft update
Gears of war reloaded
Indian Jones:expansion
Gears E day
Clockwork revolution
Fable
Doom the dark ages
The outer worlds 2
Grounded 2
Call of duty

OtterX16d ago

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer199216d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted16d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast16d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica16d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

DivineHand12516d ago

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

neutralgamer199216d ago

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts16d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

Dear God it's been 4 years since infinite and no official update on anything lol.

Tacoboto19d ago

No official update on anything?

They replaced studio leadership
They changed the studio name
They announced the change to UE5
... all while supporting Infinite

The support to Infinite isn't what it originally should have been but they've still been providing tons of official updates over the years, and as recently as two months ago added a brand new weapon.

GamerRN18d ago

I think remaking Halo Combat Evolved, and going to 2 and 3 again, will help give the studio an idea of how to make a Halo game feel like Halo again

Tacoboto18d ago

Infinite did feel like Halo, that's not what the complaints were...

The complaints were almost literally everything else. Monetization, netcode and desync, the campaign structure, story, and single biome, the weaker-than-expected post-launch content.

InUrFoxHole18d ago

Gotta agree. Infinite felt like halo.

Profchaos19d ago

Dev times in modern days 4 years of silence isn't unheard of when things are running smoothly.

And around 6 months ago 343 did show a tech demo of ue5 using halo assets so it's not radio silence.

Given all the shake ups i am more surprised we're getting anything next year at all.

RaidenBlack19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

They coulda started with Halo 3 remake ... I know Halo CE remaster was not proper with the art style but still, remaking after a remaster seems dull, when Halo 3 and Reach have started to show some age.

PhillyDonJawn19d ago

Yeah I hate they used Halo reach artstyle. Hope this remake feel authentic yet fresh

--Onilink--19d ago

Probably the simplest to work around with. They are reportedly doing it in UE5, so its just as much an Anniversary thing, as its probably the studio getting familiar and setting up their tools and processes in the engine with an actual game, to facilitate the development of the next Halo

I'm guessing combat evolved has a smaller scope in general the later half of the game features a ton of backtracking and reused assets making it a easier game to remake on a deadline

Its also a better choice if this is the first game to be multiplatform mind you I think it's pretty much a given that anyone with a passing curiosity has played this by now in some way be it pc or brought a used console for a few bucks

This will likely come to PS5 at the same time. 25 years of XB.... shared with PS.

It´s gonna be among best sellers on PS Store next year regardless.

I would love to see Lost Odyssey come over to PS5. I would definitely buy that again. That was the first game that I played on my 360. Loved the story and battle system. One of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion.
