Former PlayStation Exec Says 'The Game Is Changing' As Xbox Goes Multiplatform

Boyes has been talking to Gamertag Radio host Danny Peña recently - and when asked about Microsoft's new strategy, the former Sony employee had some interesting things to say. Boyes spoke about "the game landscape changing" - and that "they [Microsoft] were Blockbuster" and over time "they became Netflix".

They had no choice but to pivot to what you are seeing now. Good for them and good for Playstation gamers.

The problem with his analogy is that Netflix has exclusives.

The idea that tech will evolve beyond hardware keeps getting conflated with the argument for the console makers to abandon closed ecosystems. They are not the same thing. Netflix has exclusives created by Netflix, exclusives it acquires from other parties, and content that is not exclusive.

343_Guilty_Spark134d ago

What is Netflix’s hardware platform?

That’s right….Any TV, device, smartphone with the App.

Xbox can be any device. They will still create content.

RauLeCreuset134d ago

@343_Guilty_Spark

I'm not sure what that has to do with my point.

Once again, the idea that tech will evolve beyond hardware, which is what you're talking about, is not the same as the idea that console makers should abandon closed ecosystems.

It's true that you don't need a 'Netbox' to use Netflix. It is also true that Netflix has a closed ecosystem that includes exclusives they either create or purchase.

Boyes is conflating two different things in his argument.

"They had no choice but to pivot to what you are seeing now. Good for them and good for Playstation gamers."

Don´t worry. Sony will follow next. Those companies will always follow the money first no matter what. I know, I´ve learned the hard way. I was a fool to believe MS would keep Xbox games exclusives and here we are.

As for Sony, Spider-Man 2 just got released on STEAM and got 18K peak concurrent players *so far*. That´s very low when compared to Spider-Man Remastered and its 66k peak concurrent players.

So I´m quite intrigued on how Sony plans to continue and invest in very expensive (Spider-Man 2´s development cost was 315 Million) AAA single player games while keeping and maintaining its 10+ new studios acquired in the last 5 years or so, without further expand their multiplatform strategy.

And before you lost it and reply back to me with some ad hominem nonsense, bear in mind that Hiroki Totoki just got promoted to CEO of Sony Corp. Just in case you never heard of him, he´s the same man who made the follow statement last year:

“In the past, we wanted to popularize console and the 1st party titles' main purpose was to make the console popular. It is true, but there is a synergy to it. So if you have strong first party content, not only with our console but also other platforms like computers, 1st party can be grown with multiplatform and that can help operating profit to improve. So that is another one we want to proactively work on."

https://www.ign.com/article...

You see... There's a new boss in town, so changes are already in motion.

Just be prepared for whatever comes next and thank me later.

RauLeCreuset134d ago

Bruh, why is most of your post dedicated to Sony possibly doing later what MS is doing now? 😂

Take a breath and live in the moment for a second. You were still doubting the Xbox ports after Phil Spencer said repeatedly "no red lines." You literally just yesterday became a believer and have already pivoted to spreading FUD about what Sony may do.

"I was a fool to believe MS would keep Xbox games exclusives and here we are."

Was it your conclusion that was foolish or your behavior? There's nothing wrong with waiting for things to play out enough for you to offer an informed opinion, unless you're trying to push a narrative. Look at how you ended your comment after supposedly learning your lesson.

"Just be prepared for whatever comes next and thank me later."

You had less information informing that take than you had when you got it wrong about Xbox. You're just throwing stuff against the wall to spread FUD and hoping something will eventually stick.

fr0sty134d ago

The difference is, Sony owns the console market pretty much entirely now that Nintendo has moved on to the hybrid handlheld space. They don't need to release their games on competing platforms, as there aren't going to be competing platforms much longer now that all the Xbox games are coming to PlayStation, there won't be a need to keep the hardware division open anymore.

helicoptergirl134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

All I will say is there is no way they will release their games on Xbox consles imo. Day and date on PC I can maybe, maybe see one day. But never on Xbox consoles. It will never happen because not only do MS have dwindling and ever-decreasing console sales, they also have GamePass where most of the subscribers tend to not want to buy games. Releasing on Xbox consoles is simply not worth it for Sony imo.

I know who Hiroki Totoki is. He's my spiritual advisor ;-)

Obscure_Observer134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

@fr0sty

"The difference is, Sony owns the console market pretty much entirely now that Nintendo has moved on to the hybrid handlheld space. They don't need to release their games on competing platforms."

You being here for a very long time, man... so I´m assuming that you remember when Xbox had gone multiplatform with the PC?

Do you remember how many PS fans here swore for their lives that moment Playstation decided and release first party games on PC they would be done with Playstation consoles for good?

How things turn out? Don´t answer. It was a rhetorical question.

So yeah... I heard it all before.

Sony doesn´t need to do this and that, like you know better.

FYI they´re already developing games for both Xbox and Nintendo as we speak!

What armchair analysts told us is that porting ANY game for Xbox when nobody is gonna buy is not worth the effort, time and money.

So there´s "No reason" for Sony to port MLB since Game Pass money is off the table, BUT, *somehow* Xbox gamers will still get a port anyway.

"No reason" to port and release LEGO Horizon on the Switch but Sony did it anyway. "No reason" to port Spider-Man 2 for PC after an year and yet Sony did it anyway.

But lets just play some silly coy game and pretend that Sony don´t need to do none of those because they´re just like Nintendo where every single game is exclusive to their console. /S

It's just history repeating itself. Ms lost the console wars and is now becoming a publisher (just like Sega). I just wonder if a new manufacturer will step in to fill the void.

Yui_Suzumiya134d ago

Atari Leopard or Sega Dreamcast 2

got_dam133d ago

They really did have no choice. It's too bad, though. Sony needs real competition to keep them on top of their game. They have a history of being pretty anticonsumer when they can get away with it. Microsoft offered that competition the OG xbox and 360. But they couldn't stay out of their own damn way past those. Maybe they were just flukes. But there needs to be a viable alternative to keep the home console market consumer friendly.

They didn't become netflix, let's talk when they do.

PRIMORDUS134d ago

So what's the point of exclusives anymore lol. It's like Nintendo saying ok MS and Sony will be getting Mario and Zelda.

FinalFantasyFanatic134d ago

This, Nintendo does so well because they have exclusives you can't play anywhere else, it's also one of the reasons that the PS5 and it's lack of exclusives is so lacklustre this gen.

343_Guilty_Spark134d ago

Hasn’t been a point for probably a decade

Ristul134d ago

Aah, good old Guilty Spark, I remember when you argued against the rumours of Xbox games going to PC. Now Xbox games are also on Playstation and Switch, we understand it must be hard on you 😅

343_Guilty_Spark133d ago

I never argued for Xbox games to not go to PC because I simply don’t give a shit.

They can go to a whatever plastic box that’ll play it.

Elda134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

Anyone with common sense knew MS was going fully fledged multi-platform, the only ones that were in denial are the XB fanatics. XB cannot sell games on its own platform they need PS & Nintendo to do that. I won't be buying any XB games to play on my PS5 Pro. I'll play any of the new incoming releases that look interesting to play on my XBSX through GP like the rest of the XB owners...lol.

Asterphoenix134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

The difference is exclusives are almost non existent on Xbox. MS used the excuse to say Sony wasn't their competitor. Now they are going multiplatform due to trying to pay off the Activision acquisition. Difference with Netflix there's exclusives. Same with other streaming services.

Now they push the narrative that everything is going to be non consoles in the future and no exclusives as well as rising costs.

It's like they are a "expert" in this aspect of the industry. Least Sony is keeping exclusives to some degree despite PC.

Nintendo is most console of the lot and they're doing better than the lot.

Maybe if they release old Sony games on more platforms they could earn more $$.
To make new games.

They will lose nothing. maybe some screams from few angry fanboys. and that's it.

__y2jb1d 6h ago

It’s not about what you lose by releasing game X on another platform. It’s about losing brand value over the long term when people realise your games are no longer exclusive. It would be madness to devalue the brand in this way imo.

fr0sty1d 5h ago

They don't really need Xbox, there isn't a big enough install base there to really make it worth it to port the games to a platform with fewer than 50 million consoles sold... especially when many of those folks have a PS5 also. That said, Switch 2 is selling like hotcakes, and Sony would be smart to consider ports to it. Honestly, I think that would be a smarter move on their part than trying to release another handheld.

Enate1d 4h ago

That's not what he was referring to when he was asked the question. He was was talking about them being throughtful on when and if they put their games on other platforms. Speaking to their current strategy of brining titles to PC. It was not about bringing titles to Xbox.

Scissorman1d 4h ago

thank you for actually reading 😂

TheEroica1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Sony is a 3rd party publisher... Just like Microsoft. Has been for a while now.

Congrats to all gamers who get to play games without being walled from silly exclusive deals... Only corporate bootlickers want to keep games from their fellow gamers.

MoU22h ago

Yet you have all of those people that pay various monthly subscriptions to Netflix, Disney+, HBO, Amazon Prime etc. so they can have access to the exclusive movies and TV shows each platform has. So yes, exclusives do matter.
Exclusives are what made the PS the household name it is, and one day we'll say "it was", 'cause the executives will have removed the main, if not only, incentive to buy a PS console.

A thousand pardons I forgot the t.

Gunstar751d 16h ago

They have no choice. Their market share is shrinking and they are in it for the money

ravens521d 16h ago

They just had record breaking financials. They said people this gen are spending the most. Chill, theyre fine xbot.

GhostScholar17m ago

Them being profitable doesnt mean the market share isnt shrinking. The comments made were by Sony and I’m pretty sure they know better than you what is best for them. Nintendo will be the only company in the end that doesn’t go full multiplat. That’s just the way of the world.

Lightning771d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

No it's not wtf? So we're just gonna run around and make stuff up now?

Deathdeliverer1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

@ Gunstar75

lol are you serious right now? If Sony has shrinking market share whos eating it? Definitely isn’t Microsoft when the series X/s are selling worse than the Xbox one. The switch is WIDELY known as a companion console. It’s what you get WITH your Xbox or PS or even PC. Some games simply sell best on PC, but that’s a minority. As someone that plays on everything, please explain who Sony ids losing market share to? If anything they want to recoup from these live service blunders.

StoneTitan1d 5h ago

Dayum the biggest and growing. Guess someone is eating crow for the rest of the year @Gunstar75

As for market share, I'll let you use Google for that one.....

Sales of PS5 are 7% ahead of PS4 at the same number of months.

And the PlayStation brand is doing better than ever due to the massive numbers of users still buying games, subscriptions and content on PS4.

GhostScholar1d 11h ago

Agree and even the bluest ponies know that

crazyCoconuts21h ago

All these years and folks still don't understand the fundamental business model of the PlayStation platform

GhostScholar16h ago

It’s cool to say that but I guess the Sony brass disagree with you.

ravens521d 16h ago

If PS puts 1st party games on any other platform guess what ima do!?!?! Nothing lol. I dnt really care.

ThinkThink1d 8h ago

Same for xbox. More people playing games is a win/win.

ravens5223h ago

Ye. Im fine with it. I just hope they actually sell on other platforms if that ends up being the case. I want to get Gears but idk if the game is on disc or not. I welcome Microsoft games, but PLEASE PLEASE put the game ON THE DISC. If not its a no purchase for me.

Playstation cloud gaming? Wasn’t that PS Now until it merged with PS plus….
Can someone tell me what’s going on?

M_Prime22d ago

PS Cloud gaming was PS NOW before, now its the Premium tier (top one) of PLAYSTATION PLUS.

if you have PS+Premium you can cloud stream games onto a PS4 or PS5 or onto a PS Portal. The nice thing about being able to stream directly to a PS Portal is that you don't need your PS5 to be turned on and used to remote play.

PS NOW had a PC app, which sadly as far as i know is gone and PS+Premium has no app and no way to stream onto a PC.

StoneTitan22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

The pc app is still there. You can use it to stream just like you used psnow.
You can stream all catalog games on PC and ps5

StoneTitan22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

If you have ps+ premium you can stream from your pc and ps5 all the games from the catalog

Eonjay21d ago

It's not just the catalog. You can also stream alot ofthe games you have purchased as well.

andy8522d ago

So can I get forza on my portal?

MatrixxGT22d ago

I don’t understand cloud gaming. I’ve tried them all. Ps5, Portal, ROG Ally, XB cloud and no matter what I do I just can’t play the games because of the lag and artifacting that breaks immersion.
I have 1gb fiber that was freshly installed as well.
Local remote play works pretty good from PS and XB but strictly streaming the whole game from the cloud has been a mediocre experience for me and definitely not worth the higher cost sub.

repsahj21d ago

Maybe your router? mine works fine even with stock router, but it works much better if I connect to deco.

MatrixxGT21d ago

Maybe, it’s brand new hardware a few months old but is generic isp hardware.
XB remote play local works amazing, and using my portal at home is flawless and runs like it was native.
But anything strictly played in cloud is so inconsistent.

andy8521d ago

Hardwired? Because mine was flawless and I was on 32mb Internet

MatrixxGT21d ago

Can’t hardwire a portal.
