PS5 Tops 70M Lifetime - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for December 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 3.42 million units sold for December 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 71.03 million units lifetime worldwide.

The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 2.69 million units to bring its lifetime sales to 148.79 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 0.97 million units to bring their lifetime sales to 32.17 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 5,163 units to bring its lifetime sales to 117.20 million units.

This is quite astonishing:

"2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 18.65 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 12.05 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 4.97 million units."

For PS5, it's still Jan to Mar left for their complete fiscal year.

However, November and December saw the PS5 Pro being available for the first time. And if the estimates for November were approximately correct, then PS5 sold a whopping 4m in that month alone.

In conclusion, PS5 could even exceed its projected goal of 18m units sold in its running fiscal year by the end of Match.

While the Series consoles, which their fiscal year runs until end of June, is on track of barely even reaching 5m units sold globally, if the trend in hardware decline of above 40% year-on-year continues.

Microsoft will benefit from ABK and GP subscriptions I'd claim, no doubt.

And soon Microsoft's Q2 and Sony's Q3 will get released. That's going to be very interesting for a dozen of reasons.

But in terms terms of hardware units sold alone throughout their fiscal years, this truly is a bloodbath compared to PS5.

I see why they're trying to end this gen early.

70Million is indeed insane.. I really like PS5 but I think it is sad with all of Sony's missteps this figure could have been about 10Million higher by now if games like Uncharted, a new GOW, inFamous, Days Gone 2 were out and no gaas.

gold_drake96d ago

damn what?

already? very nice.

pwnmaster300096d ago

PlayStation is like the iPhone of video game console.
Wether that’s a positive or a negative I’ll leave that up to you lol.

blackblades96d ago

How the hell is it like the iPhone of consoles, they ain't releasing one every year

andy8595d ago

Iphone has zero innovation. Playstation do.

Travesty96d ago

Sales at this point don’t mean as much. I am happy they done well.. they are mainstream.. they try to expand on ways to play with PSVR2 and PlayStation Portal.. they do a good job there but I can’t be the only one disappointed with the lack of games that this generation has had.
It doesn’t feel as excited this gen.. we had great games but they are just so widely spaced out..

Eonjay96d ago

Honestly there are tons of great game. Too many to play them all. The issue has been squarely on the output of WWS titles. Fortunate for them there are still plenty of good console exclusives to help carry them. And hits like Helldivers and Astrobot are doing great. But all in all there is a ton of good games to play.

Travesty96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

I agree I like those titles.. obviously I like most first party titles or second and third party titles. Returnal, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, Sackboy, Ratchet and Clank, GT7, Kena: Bridge of Spirits. God of War Ragnorak.
And FF16 and Spider-Man 2 in 2023
HellDivers 2 in 2024 and FF7 Rebirth, Rise of Ronin and Astrobot..

I know I missed some but I did enjoy those games. It just feels like there is a huge gap between previous gen’s. I understand the dev time and they’re not putting games out as fast the ps3 era with 1-2 years of development.
But honestly I wouldn’t mind smaller games or just stand alone multiplayer games that would give you more to play like the PS3 era.

I don’t disagree with you but I guess I had higher expectations.

WelkinCole96d ago

You are not alone. I've been a long-time PS fan. PS5 has been the worst PS generation by far. It's still better than Comp, but compared to the previous PS generation, it's not even close.

The biggest issue is the output of their internal studios this gen for me has been very bad.

Like compared to the PS3 gen by now, there would already be Resistance 1,2, Infamous 1,2,Warhhawk, Heavenly Sword, MostorStorm 1,2, Uncharted 1,2, MGS4, LBP1,2, Killzone 2, Demon Souls, VC etc etc. Most of them are new IP btw

What about the PS5 gen? At least the PS4 had drive club, Horizon, The Order and Bloodbourne by this time.

At least ND has offically announced Intergalitic which I am super stoked to play once its release but the rest?

Honestly, I enjoyed my PS5 more than my PS4 during its time. Now, how can I imagine what you'll feel on green camp if you're disappointed already with the PS5 lineup? XD

Another gen which will reach 100+ console sales. It's practically part of their DNA.

PS5 Pro Is No Longer the Most Expensive Console You Can Buy

In the aftermath of Microsoft’s price adjustments, the top-line Xbox will cost you $729.99 in the United States. That’s $30 more than the PS5 Pro’s $699.99.

Mango Mussolini just made gaming more expensive for all of us.

gigoran81h ago

Microsoft last raised their prices in 2023. Should we have blamed the serving POTUS back then too, or its just corporate greed this time too?

CrimsonWing6926m ago(Edited 26m ago)

I’ll bite.

So, what’s the exact reason they raised the prices now? I’ll give you a hint, it’s the same reason Nintendo postponed Switch 2 pre-orders. I’ll give you another hint, it’s the same thing that forced them to “assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.”’

Oops… I think I gave it away with using Nintendo’s exact frackin’ quote.

And Microsoft said their increase was because of “market conditions
and rising costs of production. The price hikes are happening globally and come amid concerns about President Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports, where many Xbox consoles and accessories are manufactured.”

But look, let’s forget those facts for a moment, and you tell me the reasoning for the price increases.

Keeper7718m ago

Crazy that your post could even get any upvotes.

Everything is going up because of these stupid tariffs.

darthv7259m ago

....does this pro price include the optical drive?

lukasmain53m ago(Edited 52m ago)

$80 digital games? Yep all Trump's fault. an old lady fell and broke her hip outside my house the other day and guess whose fault it is? You can connect the dots and figure out a way to blame anyone or anything. But if the economy gets better after all this negotiating in foreign trade comes to an end, do you think MS will suddenly drop their prices on games? HELL NO

rlow11h ago(Edited 1h ago)

No these companies are price gouging and if the tariffs never kick in, they’ll still keep them high.

What’s disgusting about MS move is they’re charging more for a five year old console. At least Sony did a mid gen refresh.

PRIMORDUS1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

The whole video game industry is turning to shit, too much greed and mass layoffs. I don't have much hope for the future of gaming.

Profchaos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

They are charging this to spread the impact out. Given that Xboxs main user base is in the US it's not surprising they have had to increase the cost in the US vs Sony who has not had to alter the US price much as only a percentage of their fan base exists in the US as they are the only console in town next to the switch for most of the world

If the US alone absorbed the price would be far higher it's absolutely a knee jerk reaction globally.

Sony doing a mid gen refresh really doesn't matter as they have also increased the cost of the base model at least in my region the cost has risen from $750 at launch to $829

Switch 2 pricing took the cost into consideration I imagine the cost would have been $100 less had the looming threat of tarrifs and the poor Japanese yen been a factor

But at the end of the day it is what it is and we should just be thankful that we already own the systems we want assuming here you do as most hardcore gamers will have a console if they intended on getting one by now.

It's the next gen systems I'm worried about

PRIMORDUS1h ago

So they want to sell less, is all I see.

andy851h ago

I remember the alt account trying to make fun of the Pro last week saying it's the most expensive console in history (it wasn't). And now MS decide to actually have the most expensive one in history that's just a base Xbox model 😂

Profchaos1h ago

Same deal with the switch 2 it's sad that people get so emotional over priced of plastic and feel these companies owe them

rlow124m ago

I don’t think people feel they’re owed anything, but when you have a business model that has been done the same for decades. It’s hard to adjust. Also the fact that gaming has always been affordable to pretty much everyone no matter financial status. But now it’s getting to a point where people are going to get knocked out of a hobby they love and enjoy.

Marathon is doomed — ARC Raiders is already a much better extraction shooter

This is silly. I think both games are amazing. Both games can be very successful at the same time and I hope they are.

z2g2h ago

I hate articles like this. “My opinion is all that matters. Click my stuff”. Both games will have their audiences. Some ppl like rock. Some ppl like rap. Not everyone is the same.

LordoftheCritics13m ago

Both are just another streamer game.

z2g2h ago

So we can we can see into the future now? I’m sure ARC is fine, me personally? Far more interested in Marathon. Between known Bungie’s solid gameplay and world building to the aesthetics and concept, I’m all in on Marathon.

InUrFoxHole17m ago

Yeah but unfortunately marathon are both in the hands of gamers and one has been recommend for delay.

jjb19812h ago

I played the Technical Test 2 earlier today and had a blast. I got thrown in an instance, saw a guy walking up some stairs, started shooting at him and watched him run for his life. It was funny until I got killed by some random drones. They're both different games and will have their space. Only the gameplay loop will tell.

pwnmaster30002h ago

Why do gamers/gamejournalist do this? We need to stop with all this doom article game shit.

lodossrage1h ago

windowscentral wouldn't have wrote this "piece" if Bungie was still owned by Microsoft.

And yes, I'm implying exactly what anyone reading this comment thinks.
