Publishers want GTA 6 to cost $100 to recoup costs, but that’s what GTA Online is for

GTA 6 could cost around $100 on launch as publishers want Rockstar to increase their price so that every other game can follow.

Rockstar releasing it for 49.99 would be peak hilarity.

Eonjay97d ago

You know all I can say is that if they want people to pay $100 it has to be worth that amount of money.

Darkegg96d ago

The problem might be $100 + DLC cost which is what fighting games are doing. But they need their "partners" to back them up in this corporate behavior. Just like how a "paid" streaming service now includes a paid tier for advertisement. The thought process begins innocently...

gold_drake97d ago

its funny that people really think that gta online is stopping rockstar to increase the price.

PapaBop97d ago

Yeah look at Fifa UT, that alone must be EA's wet dream come true and make them insane amounts for minimal effort but you don't see them releasing Fifa/EA FC as a f2p game like they easily could.

CrimsonWing6997d ago (Edited 97d ago )

I’m not a business guru, but if I was running a business and I’m spending X amount to produce a good and it only sells/makes Y amount, which is NOT bringing me an ROI… how would it make sense to raise the price instead of lowering costs to produce said good to where sales DO produce an ROI?

I get with GTA 6 people will buy this for $100, me included, but I will not pay that for just any game as a standard for industry MSRP. Hell, I’ve been waiting on more sales when games hit $70. Like where the f*ck does it stop? If $100 becomes a standard, you don’t think they’ll push it to $110 at some point? This industry is nuts if they think that’s gonna fly.

Redgrave97d ago

Every stupid new standard starts somewhere, and this particular title shouldn't be the one we allow to usher it in.

For example, Sony upping their releases by ten dollars and for what? They didn't need to, and then suddenly other publishers started doing it. It will happen here, and likely even without you or I voting with our wallets (if we so chose). This is an unfortunate exploitative opportunity that's going to usher in more expensive games and expectations that won't be met each and every time. Increase price to recoup costs, less people buy, costs aren't recouped and then layoffs and closures occur.

VersusDMC97d ago

2k/Take two started the 70 dollar trend.

https://arstechnica.com/gam...

"Last week, 2K made waves by becoming the first publisher to set a $70 asking price for a big-budget game on the next generation of consoles."

And it can also be said that the price hikes on videogames started with the switch raising the price old tech portable games from 40(Vita and 3ds prices) to 60.

If switch 2 games are 70 then console games are definitely going to at least be 80. Because whatever reasoning Nintendo uses for the raise will just be used by everyone else.

Darkegg96d ago

People just have to learn to walk away. Video games are nice but not that much of a necessity. I supported the industry, playing less than a fraction of my library. And fighting games have been inelastic this last generation. My choice was to cave in or walk away. I happily chose to walk away. Of course we need something else to do with our times. So now I'm finding other entertainments that give balance to my life that is much more healthy. With the way studios are investment more into graphics, and our insatiable thirst, we have to come to understand that there is a limit. I think we are there and studios have to put more time on things other than graphics. And that's the magic point is one where they don't need to invest MORE into it just be more creative about it with tools that are available. The "more" mentality is the problem.

anast97d ago

People will pay however much they ask.

KwietStorm_BLM97d ago

Well you just said you'd pay 100 for GTA. So you can't ask where does it stop in the same breath. You're contributing to that manufactured inflation. GTA is a game that could pull some BS like this, and when people still buy it, the floodgates are open. There is never a time when enough people vote with their wallets because everyone is too impulsive to stand up for themselves.

CrimsonWing6997d ago

Oh I know, but look, I don’t have the will power to sit out GTA 6 until it drops to $50. That’s me being real. But I’d say 90% of most releases I can. Like the hype I have for GTA 6 is absolutely disgusting.

KwietStorm_BLM97d ago

I don't have the willpower to wait for 50 bucks either, because we know this game don't go on sale, but I absolutely would balk at 100. I don't care that it's GTA. I'm really hoping all this talk is just nonsense someone put out there and Rockstar wouldn't be so snide to make an industry altering decision like this.

PapaBop97d ago

Ask Yves Guillemot. If GTA 6 sells for $100, you bet he's going to ramp up Ubi prices then complain when his games flop that people expect GTA 6 quality games when they pay for GTA 6 prices.

GTA 6 is the ONLY game I would pay 100$ for, and that's a maybe. There is no chance in hell I would pay this for any other game. I'm not even buying games for full price anymore, because 70$ is already fucking crazy.

clevernickname97d ago

If you did pay $100 for this game, you would be part of the problem. It would signal publishers that $100 for a game is what consumers will tolerate.

PapaBop97d ago

GTA is an exception, it's a once in a generation game, I'll gladly pay $100 for it if I have to but I'll laugh when Ubi try to charge me that for Assassins Creed or Activision/Microsoft think I'll pay that for COD Black Ops MW 1199. I'd be extremely cautious and never preorder a game if publishers of inferior quality think I'm going to pay $100 for a game.

boing196d ago

Then those publishers would have to be really stupid to expect we would accept such price as new 'normal'. GTA is in the league of its own, always has been and always will be. There is nothing else like it.

97d ago
Redgrave97d ago

If there's any game publishers need to worry about "recouping costs", it's not this one. Slapping a $100 price tag on GTA6 would be being greedy for the sake of it because there's no version where this game flops or undersells, unless it's fundamentally different from the expected GTA formula. Even a lazy copy paste job from GTAV with a Vice City overhaul would still do stupidly well.

Everyone knows that this is a juggernaut release, and I certainly won't be buying until a sale if they price this at $100.

If Rockstar Needed an Excuse to Charge $100 for GTA 6, Nintendo Just Pulled the Trigger

TNS: With the Nintendo Switch 2 bringing new games that cost $80 bucks, what's stopping Rockstar from giving GTA 6 a price tag of $100 or more?

Hopefully everyone will hate Nintendo with passion like they did Sony if this happens. $90 physical games here Nintendo comes!

But honestly, I applaud their balls going for that $450 pricetag with a 1080p lcd screen and a mere 256GB storage. Additional SD card is definitely needed and they're expensive and their games are expensives despite the 3rd party games being the worst version of the bunch.

Good luck, I guess.

CDbiggen24d ago

I feel like people aren't talking enough about the storage situation. It kind of has been overshadowed by the prices.

badz14924d ago

The price should make the matter worse if you consider the storage. And the mere 12GB of RAM, most probably only like 10GB usable due to the OS needing some reserves but that's being generous. Considering the "new" online features, I doubt 2GB of RAM is enough for the OS. With under 10GB RAM, you can just forget 4K even if the system supports 4K output. I think even 1440p will be reached only with DLSS. RT? Yeah maybe at 900p

Tacoboto24d ago

Steam Deck is $400 for a dramatically lower quality display - 800p 60hz non-HDR - and a lower capacity battery.

It has the superb ecosystem, but no baseline for performance and "Verified" lately tends to mean titles that just barely run on the thing.

CDbiggen24d ago

I was so disappointed by my steam deck's display, IPS glow and everything, only for them to bring out the OLED a year or so later. So like with pro model consoles, I now know to wait for the OLED models for handhelds.

badz14924d ago

Would be crucified for sating this but OLED is not the be all and end all for a good display and experience. Yeah, the Deck LCD is kinda bad, but I am still genuinely impressed by the display of the PS Portal which is also LCD. Reports are saying that the Switch 2 display is equally good too.

gold_drake24d ago

but to be very fair

people already said that they dont care about the price of gta6. so this will give rockstar even more push to do it

MarvelzDJ24d ago

Yeah but probably it will be worth it. If ubisoft or EA price their yearly crap games 100$ I wouldn‘t even consider buying them for a second.

gold_drake24d ago

no game is worth a 100 dollar price tag.

MarvelzDJ24d ago

R* doesn‘t need an excuse. Their games use to set the bar so high that no one even comes close for years and years. No company has come close to RDR2 when it comes to open worlds and the same will happen with GTA6.

FACTUAL evidence24d ago

I have no problem with companies wanting to charge 100$ for their games. I would just never buy them. 🙅

GTA VI Marketing Window Is Relatively Close To Its Release

The marketing window for Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games' open world action game, GTA VI, is relatively close to its release.

It’s not coming this year. I don’t know why people can’t accept this! lol

Profchaos31d ago

Until Rockstar outright say it's not happening then it's happening.

They dropped the trailer and got 200 million views in a few days they could shadow drop the game and it would outsell everything that has ever existed movies and games

Abear2131d ago

Agreed, but with each day that passes and we hear nothing the more obvious it becomes that Rockstar themselves aren’t sure it’ll be ready.

Putte31d ago

So April will actually be the month when it all starts. So they have changed the hype windue a little with shorter time between marketing and release. I like that

lucasnooker31d ago

Yeah yeah. Downvote me all you like. Y’all gonna see soon when we get that official delay. We ain’t even got trailer 2 yet. You guys are delusional

Abear2131d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I think you’re right, maybe an Ass Creed Shadows situation where they launch a few months later than expected to polish up.

I’ve been checking gaming news lately with more excitement knowing the second trailer or release day is going to be announced and it’s crickets.

The silence is deafening at this point and it does seem more likely it’ll slip to first quarter of ‘26

thorstein31d ago

"Marketing window"

Rockstar just needs to drop the release date and the entire gaming world stops.

Putte31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Next month will be the time the world stops.

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

According to Rockstar that window is whenever they damn well please

They gave a singular sentence saying we can't wait to show what we have been up to last December and the world lost it's mind the trailer would go on to hit 250 million views on Rockstars channel not including the many more ign or other outlets got making the trailer one of the most watched videos within 24 hours

Putte30d ago

Yes and that is what everybody is debating now. When that is. What's your point?

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I'm not convinced by this statement given the initial trailer dropped in December 2023.

Rumour — Rockstar Is Planning Roblox/Fortnite-Style User-Generated Content For GTA VI

Rockstar Games is reportedly looking to incorporate user-generated content similar to Roblox and Fortnite for Grand Theft Auto VI.

The developer has apparently already met with a number of major Roblox and Fortnite creatures about the possibility of building custom experiences in GTA VI, with Rockstar reportedly planning to allow the game’s environment and assets to be modified by creators to implement their own IP into the sandbox.
