PC gaming outsells Console gaming at an alarming rate

It has been undoubtedly stated many times by various users that the world of PC Gaming has a lot of advantages compared to consoles, here is why.

i dunno if i agree with that.

both have their advantages.

price of the hardware is definitely a huge selling point for consumers.

a pc does have the advantage of a huge reyro library with emulation or games that are too controversial for consoles.

Terry_B138d ago

Aye. Just bought me a new pc..and I bet I am going to play more older games than new ones on it in the next years.

Including some of my favourite PS2 games.

blackblades138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

Main problem with PC is the hardware price and not user friendly when upgrading. Which steam deck comes in handy or one day a steam box 2 comes around. Its the best companion device honestly for those like me. I like PlayStation but I don't like the pay to play online nonsense and there high prices on games amongst other things. Having a PC aka SD style for me, epic games has the free games, steam for fighting games cause im not paying just play them online on ps. As well has buying at a cheaper price then what is on the ps store. Then theres pc only games, mobile games,
emulation etc. Then theres freedom, the player has the choice to uncensor or censor. Pc has the overall advantage in my book SD won me over. Pretty sure a lot of people is like that.

crazyCoconuts138d ago

There are quite a few other usability downsides to PC for non-technical gamers. The wild thing is to see the huge leaps Valve has had in pushing a PC more towards a console. Hard to imagine that someday we may be debating what a PC really is.

gold_drake138d ago

oh i absolutely agree with that, it gets so technical sometimes, its crazy

Junryain88137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

PC is just becoming more accessible and affordable. History repeats itself and I think will will be the go-to for gaming again.

The free online play and PC game stores giving away free games also helps. You can build a big library from epic game store or GOG for free. Valve rarely gives away free games (but every time they did, I picked it up).

Article provided no sales facts at all.

Said the PS5 is overpriced compared to average modern gaming PC? Say what?

NotoriousWhiz138d ago

I'm not going through 221 slides, the information should have been in the article.

Fishy Fingers138d ago

No agreed. Hopefully someone can condense it into something more appropriate for my attention span like a tweet or a TikTok dance.

VariantAEC127d ago

@NotoriousWhiz
MY TIME HAS COME!
At slide 59 we see the title, "Twenty years ago, PC' S share of non-mobile content spend was 29%. It's now 53%. And while console has stagnated since 2021, PC has grown 20%"
It shows a bar graph and the important bits are outlined in the title. In 2021 the PC market was about 49% of the pie while consoles were 51% of the pie. The revenue split was 4% favoring consoles.
In 2024 PC revenues grew by 20% from $39.7 billion to $47.7 billion the console market grew from $41.3 billion to $42.3 billion in the same timeframe.

What the headline of the article above doesn't tell you is that the mobile gaming market is 220% larger than PC and console combined while most of the money made on Mobile and PC is in GAAS and LS games that console gamers and most PC gamers here and elsewhere all uniformly agree are bad. This growth in revenue is driven by games like Roblox, Fortnite, PUBG, Genshin Impact, as well as other similar titles.

The stuff we agree we all hate is fueling the rise of PC as it has already exploded the smartphone gaming market.

On slide 60 we have this, "The PC ecosystem benefits from many compounding advantages over the console ecosystem -and its momentum is still growing" for a title and these points are raised,

"Existing PC Advantages:

• Much larger library than any one console (or all consoles combined), and with near full backwards compatability

• Much larger social graph than any one console (and often reaching into consoles)

• Ability to multi-task (e.g. Alt-Tab to YouTube for tips and tricks, read Game Guides, use WhatsApp, etc.), run full Discord natively, livestream with full OBS/editing suites, etc.

• Lower entry price point than consoles and higher top-range of performance than high-performance consoles

• Greater competitive capability (i.e. keyboard/mouse)

• Ability to play nearly every Early Access title in "Early Access"

Intensifying PC Advantages:

• More annual game releases (thus a compounding library advantage)

• PlayStation now releases its "exclusives" on PC (albeit in second window), as Xbox now does with all titles

• Premium Roblox games can only be bought on PC

• Hundreds of millions of children growing up on Roblox are unlikely to ask for a $500 console to play AAA games

• Portable Windows-based gaming devices are growing in popularity and have access to full Steam/PC catalogues and entitlements"

So they also admit that Xbox and PS releasing games on PC is also driving PC while ignoring the fact that many of the existing PC advantages also exist on console. Many competitive games offer more than a simple gamepad to interface with and many offer K/M, like War Thunder.

I could go on, but the reality is that if this research is correct console is where core gamers are more now than ever. On slide 32 we see that 40 billion users are downloading hyper-casual and casual games with only a few hybrid-casual games (probably the next step up to whatever "mid-core" games are by their interpretation).

CantThinkOfAUsername138d ago

Literally zero evidence in the article to back up the title. What a waste of time.

Jingsing138d ago

Because this story provides no evidence why is it that Spider-man sells 11 million on PS5 and about 40k on PC?

INMATEofARKHAM138d ago

Anyone, plus yourself, is an embarrassment to gaming and free thought. I kick goggle search returns results showing Spider-Man sold 1.5 million copies sold on PC as of March 2023. (It released on PC in August 2022.)

https://www.gamedeveloper.c...

Hell, it's day 1 concurrent numbers on steamcharts.com is over 40K. 🤣

VariantAEC126d ago

The presentation this article is based on shows that PC gamers are likely all hyper-casual children playing Roblox and Fortnite which are always online GAAS games we all claim to hate so much, but as I said this is what is driving PC's growth in marketshare.

anast138d ago

The cost of a PC equivalent to a PS5 is around $1600 and PS5 is $500.

Michiel1989138d ago

you should reconsider where you buy your pc parts

Terry_B138d ago

a 4060 ti 16gb ram alone is around 400-500 € already.

Michiel1989138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

except radeon 5700 is more equivelant, which would also make much more sense to compare it to since sony uses amd chips. It's so old now that it doesn't even get sold anymore. I had it a couple years before the ps5 released.

a 16gb 4060 will outperform it and even if, where does the other 1200 come from? and the 16gb is a nice metric you can use except more modern 8gb cards outperform older 16gb cards.

btw in case you don't understand, im not trying to argue you can get it cheaper than a ps5, but the price mentioned above is completely unaccurate.

Deeeeznuuuts137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

I genuinely mean this because I hear this all the time and not trying to bait anyone, I'm genuinely curious but can someone send me a link to a PC or the parts to create a PC that is the equivalent to a PS5 and cost the same or less, so £370 or less.

Don't get me wrong, I like PC and it definitely has huge advantages but I always see comments saying that they could build a PC for the same or less but I'm yet to see anyone post proof, I'm just curious.

Michiel1989137d ago

@deeznuts idk who are these so called people, I'd love to see who says that since you hear it "all the time"

anast137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

I can buy a brand new console with brand new (not used) parts. If I can't do that then it is not the same thing.

Provide a PC with all new parts (not used) for $500 that will run everything exactly like a PS5 and I will stand corrected.

DivineHand125138d ago

That quote is grossly inaccurate post-chip shortage. To build a PC that costs $1600. It would mean you are building something with an Rtx 4080 super or RTX 5080, 32 GB RAM, and a Ryzen 5 9600x. With that performance, you would far exceed even the PS5 Pro by a large margin.

rippermcrip137d ago

Comparing specs of a PC to a console is stupid.

Games on console require much less specs because developers optimize for one single spec.

PC games are highly unoptimized because they have to be developed to support basically millions of possibly combinations of parts.

So the question isn't building a similarly spec'd PC.

The question is can you build a PC that can meet the graphically output of the same game on PS5? Also these gorgeous PlayStation exclusives that have released on PC. Will they look as good on a $500 PC? The answer is no.

attilayavuzer137d ago

Even a 6650xt, ryzen 5 3600, 16gb ram, cheap case, 1tb hd, basic mobo....maybe not 500 on the nose, but 650-750 will definitely get you there. Could argue from there about game cost, free online etc... The days of needing 1k+ for a solid gaming pc are well behind us though.

Hmmm interesting. Hopefully true, liking the slowly but surely partnership between the big 3. Just imagine all the xenoblade games officially on pc. I think mcsft going 3rd party but still making consoles fits them.

Xenoblade chronicles X is not there

Either removed or the picture shown was edited, but it is currently not there

You can still view it using the internet archive!

This is good. Real good if Nintendo is smart to capitalize.

Microsoft may have begun internally testing Steam integration within the Microsoft Store environment, with the intention of eventually bringing it to the next-generation Xbox console.

Xbox + Steam = Instant Buy!

Day One!!!

OtterX15d ago

I already have one. It can do mods and VR too... it's called my PC.

VenomUK15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Now Xbox players who’ve been dying to play PlayStation games will choose to play Spider-Man, The Last of Us and God of War. Horizon: Zero Dawn - not so much.

Sonic188114d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@Venom

It's being claimed Sony can block their games from being available on Microsoft's hybrid console/PC that will have Steam on it. I saw it on Twitter by a well known source

Profchaos15d ago

It's Xbox PC app not console think of it like the current gog app

Obscure_Observer15d ago

Even if in a limited fashion, It will allow integration with Steam so Xbox console gamers will get access to their Steam library and get to play some PC only games, which is awesome news for console only player like myself.

crazyCoconuts15d ago

Yes, they'll be able to play PC only games because.... they will have bought a PC

Eonjay15d ago

@Obscure_Observer

I don't think that is going to happen. It sounds like you think PC games are coming to Xbox. What this is is just bring PC to.... PC.

crazyCoconuts15d ago

Well IF they can get the emulator to work, bringing Xbox to PC. Whether or not you call this Windows dressing a console is debatable. This will definitely get them out of the console business though

Obscure_Observer14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

"Yes, they'll be able to play PC only games because.... they will have bought a PC"

Being hearing such clueless talk since 2001 when the original Xbox introduced hard drive and broadband internet to consoles.

Some people will just hate and fear what they can´t comprehend.

@Eonjay

"I don't think that is going to happen. It sounds like you think PC games are coming to Xbox. What this is is just bring PC to.... PC."

Then why spend so much money to make Xbox consoles a part of the equation? Seriously dude, your comment doesn't even make sense and defies any reasonable logic..

IRetrouk14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Microsoft did not introduce broadband or harddrive use in consoles, they did standardise it though.
As for the rest, you had the same response to ms becoming a 3rd party publisher....didn't believe it untill ms told you to, didn't like it till ms told you to...
You won't be getting steam on a console ecosystem, stop dreaming, infact the next console is up in the air, you'll be lucky to get an oem arm device at best and at worst, a pc with an xbox sticker....
Told you already, they moving you hardcore xbox boys to pc...
You talking about logic is funny, especially when all you do is parrot what you hear from ms and pivot your opinion as much as they pivot their messaging to align with what they say, just buy a pc bro, it'll be easier for you going forward.

@obscured: “ Xbox + Steam = Instant Buy!

Day One!!! “
.
Is there anything Xbox that isn’t day one for you?
Is your Xbox fridge working for you or frozen up with a red ring I remember you was going to get it day one.
Having steam integrated on the next market is a nice thing to have that would had been better a generation ago but better late than never 🤷🏿
Personally I will ALWAYS BUY A SYSTEM FOR THE GAMES NOT A STORE FRONT 🤦🏿

badz14914d ago (Edited 14d ago )

believe it or not, many pc gamers boycott games based on the storefronts. Steam or no buy according to many of them

Eonjay15d ago

I honestly don't get the point of this. There is already a Steam Store on PC so adding it to the MS store seems redundant. Also this doesn't really mention Xbox.

Profchaos14d ago

This is just a simple integration on the Xbox app for PC to see both libraries at the same time gog already offers this.

In the future the next box will not run Xbox software but instead it will Run uwp apps to unify PC and console.

It presents a number of problems like the steamdeck verification system and requiring a wrapper for third parties but it means you don't have to Dev for a console anymore and just Dev for PC

Means that backwards compatibility has to be offered via a translation layer like wine to and full BC is not a given.

It's a interesting take but I see it only working short term like steam deck getting a steam deck verified game is getting harder and the system is only a few years old

Sonic188114d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Sounds more like a PC with the Xbox and steam logo on it 😂 I'm sure it's going to be expensive as well since it's rumor to be using the ARM architecture technology

No need for me to buy an Xbox anymore, last one i owned was 360 anyway. That and the original were good consoles. Everything is on PC now and I usually keep mine fairly modern so it's always going to outperform it, and I like to mess with apps and programs that you can't do on console so..

MrDead15d ago

We already have xbox games integration, it's called Steam.

MS store is like Bing, no one wants it.

babadivad15d ago

Xbox store is more flexible than Steamnif you own a console. Cross saves and cross buy is amazing.

If a game is on the Xbox store and Steam, given the choice, I buy the Xbox store version.

If a game I want gets released, I always check the Xbox store first.

MrDead15d ago

"If a game is on the Xbox store and Steam, given the choice, I buy the Xbox store version."

Found the Bing user.

babadivad14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@MrDead

Found the moron who likes to pay twice for the same game.

babadivad14d ago

This site is so retarded. There's literally no downside for buying on the PC xbox store if you have a console.

If the game released on the PC Xbox store, if you buy it there, you get the game for free on console.

And you share the same save file.

If I buy the game on Steam, if I wanted to play that game on console, I would have to buy it again.

I get it, because it's Xbox/Microsoft, it's automatically bad.

It's only a benefit to check if a game released on the Xbox store.

darthv7215d ago

......what's wrong with Bing? Its good to use it to get points towards stuff like movie tickets, xbox gift cards, etc.

UnbreakableAlex15d ago

People like me who don’t own a PC but want to play PC games.

babadivad15d ago

Or PC players who have an Xbox. Like me.

Eonjay15d ago

That isn't what this is. I would really like to know where the misinformation is coming from.

Maybe the next Xbox is a PC with an Xbox app that boots up when you turn it on but allows you to run PC apps and Xbox games will be converted to a version playable on PCs as well... but don't expect PC games to come to Xbox consoles.

I imagine they will let you download an app that allows you to play your Xbox games on PC. But you will still be able to download from Steam because it is a PC.

Christopher14d ago

This isn't going to turn PC games into console games. It's not even going to change how Steam changes at all since no third-party is going to want to give you a PC and console copy of a game for the same price without someone paying for it.

1Victor15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

@terry: “ .who asked for this?”

Refer to post one that couldn’t wait for this amazing killer app that will entice all Nintendo, Sony and PC gamers to buy the next generation of Xbox console 🤣
Edited for typos

Terry_B14d ago

That one can't be taken serious.

ocelot0715d ago

Makes sense doesn't it? If we are going to have Dell Alienware Xbox's and HP Xbox and Lenovo Xbox and Asus TuF Gaming Xbox PC's. A console like PC with a limited/customised windows with console form in mind.

Extermin8or3_15d ago

They'll come with pc hardware prices though...

ocelot0715d ago

Most likely but unfortunately that's just the way the world is now. Nintendo charging $500+ for a handheld that's roughly as powerful as a PS4 pro from 2016.

Sony charging $700 for a PS5 Pro.

Microsoft charging $730 for a 5 year old console with a extra 1tb of storage.

Apple charging $800 for the cheapest iPhone 16.

Samsung charging $800 for the basic s25.
