I have some serious questions about the priorities of these companies. Microsoft has already laid off over 20,000 employees in 2024, and now they’re cutting even more. Meanwhile, Phil Spencer, who’s been the head of Xbox for years, seems to be immune to any consequences. Despite overseeing a period where the company has delivered less than stellar results in terms of gaming performance, his position remains safe. Why hasn’t Spencer been held accountable for the lack of significant progress under his leadership?

It’s clear that many companies, including Microsoft, expanded their workforce during the pandemic, but now that things are “back to normal,” they’re trimming down. The reality is that gaming companies, much like other industries, are driven by profits—not by passion for gaming. Most of the money in gaming comes from investors who aren’t gamers, and they only care about their bottom line.

If Microsoft, a company worth trillions, is struggling to maintain its workforce, what chance do smaller companies have? And to be clear, I’m not just blaming Microsoft. Sony has done the same, with significant layoffs as well. Some will argue that Microsoft’s layoffs were larger than Sony’s, but we also need to consider the size difference between the two companies. In relative terms, 4,000 layoffs at Sony is still a lot when you factor in the difference in company size.

The bigger picture is that it all comes down to profits, and workers are the ones who pay the price. We’re seeing this in many industries: Boeing employees got a 2% raise over 10 years, while their CEO raked in $45 million in one year, despite the company losing money. How does that make sense?

And then there’s the issue of governance. Many lawmakers have investments in these companies. How can they fairly regulate industries when they stand to profit from their success? These self-interests only deepen the problem.

At the end of the day, the gaming industry isn’t about the games—it’s about the money. And whether it’s Xbox or PlayStation, both sides need to realize that these companies don’t care about their customers; they just see dollar signs.
