NVIDIA RTX 5080/RTX 5090 ~1.5x Faster than the RTX 4080/RTX 4090 at Same Settings (W/O DLSS 4)

NVIDIA has officially announced its GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards, including the RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090. There’s a ton of content to sift through, and in this one, we’ll present the sheer hardware performance gains. In other words, the framerates achieved without DLSS 4 or “Multi-Frame Generation.”

I thought this was an update, but it’s the same graphs NVIDIA’s using, and those bars definitely don’t reach the 50% mark. Realistically it’s looking more like 20% - 40% more powerful than the 4000 series w/o DLSS 4 depending on the game.

You should primarily upgrade if you’re coming from the RTX 3000 series or older, or if your favorite games become DLSS 4 compatible.

Nothing is value focused, it's either 5070Ti or 5090.. simple as that with the Nvidia cards.

AMD might have a good upper mid range solution, Intel? Not sure, but they're doing ok at entry level at the moment, maybe have something better later.

The only good thing about the 5090 though is that it will likely hold its value quite well for most of the 2 years that it's around.

I don't know what's gonna happen with next gen consoles, probably smaller uplifts than before.. GPUs are just getting more expensive to make.

Elit3Nick103d ago

Bear in mind that the 5000 series has better ray-tracing performance, so realistically, the performance increase would be even smaller without RT+DLSS.

Miners want power... this is software fake frames.

'NVIDIA RTX 5080/RTX 5090 ~1.5x Faster than the RTX 4080/RTX 4090 at Same Settings (W/O DLSS 4)'

N4G headline is wrong and doesn't convey the content of the article correctly: "50% faster" = "0.5x faster" NOT "1.5x faster"!

Fishy Fingers103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

LOL bro and anyone who agreed with you.

Multiply a value by 0.5 and see what you get and then do the same with 1.5. The latter is the original value + 50%. I hope you dont work in either quatum nor machanics. Jesus christ.

Eonjay103d ago

Thats... actually correct. 1.5x is 150% faster. The headline is also massively misleading because it really is talking about the benchmark of 1 game (Far Cry 6)... and that game is only showing a 25-30% increase. This is actually in line with the the TFlop increase.

Neonridr103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

1x is the same as multiplying by 1. What do you get as your answer? The original number.

1.5x would give you 50% more from the starting number which in this case would be the 4080/4090 values giving you the 5080/5090 values afterwards.

Ultimately I think the title is worded incorrectly since you would just say 50% faster, although mathematically it's correct.

porkChop102d ago

That's just incorrect. 0.5x would be half as fast. 1.5x is 50% faster. 1x would be equal, since 1x1 is 1. The headline is correct.

Killer2020UK102d ago

Semantics lads, twice as fast = 100% faster = 200% as fast.

In this article it's an increase of 50% or if you want to word it differently it's 1.5x or 150% as fast.

What it's NOT, is 50% as fast (half as fast) which is what OP is incorrectly conflating with 50% faster.

QuantumMechanic102d ago

I'm not conflating anything; semantics are everything when stating quantitative information. Everyone here who disagrees with me is flat-out wrong. Performance at the 150% (1.5x) level is 50% faster than the baseline performance. Consider this absurdity: if the headline were instead 'NVIDIA RTX 5080/RTX 5090 ~0x Faster than the RTX 4080/RTX 4090 at Same Settings (W/O DLSS 4)', are you all asserting that the 5-series cards would perform no computations? Of course, the answer is that "0x faster" would mean the 5-series cards are approximately as performant as the 4-series cards. And thus, we arrive at the conclusion that the language of the current headline, as I stated originally, is incorrect! The 5-series cards are, according to the article, ~0.5x faster than the 4-series cards.

Should i sell my 4090 for a 5090?

v_eno_m102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

unless you're an early adopters for the latest & greatest, i would like to ask ya what your 4090 can't do that makes you wanna drop that much cash for a 5090?

Blaze92999d ago

I just figured the price I could get it sold for, would make up for the price of the 5090. If I can sell it for maybe $1500, only pay $500 to upgrade - not too bad i guess?

v_eno_m98d ago

@Blaze,
i believe you'll have a tough sell, considering the reports that the 5070 has the same performance of a 4090 @ $549. I get why you would wanna do it. But at the end of the day, it's your GPU and I wish you the best on pursing it. I'm in the same boat as Babadivad, i have a 4090 that i'm happy with, no real reason for me to jump ship.

"During today's Nvidia CES 2025 keynote, Jen-Hsun Huang announced the new RTX Blackwell GeForce GPUs, with the RTX 5070 propping up the new range, offering "RTX 4090 performance at $549."

babadivad102d ago

If you want to. Especially of you can get a good price for it. I have a 4090 laptop and I'm in no hurry to upgrade.
