Sony Reveals Only 50% of PS5 Owners Use Rest Mode; Was a Driving Force in Creating Welcome Hub

Sony reveals that PS5 owners are at a 50/50 split when done gaming, as half put the console on Rest mode, while the other half shut it down.

OtterX109d ago

Almost always Rest Mode, so that I can wake it up and play via my Portal whenever I want. Also for automatic updates.

StormSnooper109d ago (Edited 109d ago )

Same. But I been putting it in rest mode even prior to the Portal.

Cacabunga109d ago (Edited 109d ago )

At the same time SSD allows so fast booting of software that rest mode isn’t so relevant compared to before.
I only put the console in rest mode if the game doesn’t have auto save feature or controllers need charging after gaming session. Otherwise always OFF

Army_of_Darkness108d ago (Edited 108d ago )

Same. I only use rest mode when there isn't a nearby save point, have plans on playing later from exactly where I left off or need to charge a controller... Come to think of it, rest mode is pretty awesome! 😁
My condo has arbitrary blackouts, which is my only concern for rest mode.

Christopher109d ago

I do it just for the auto-updates. Last thing I want to do is turn on my console and wait for it to update when it could have done that when I was sleeping.

OtterX108d ago

Yea, even before my Portal I always kept it on rest mode for that reason too.

The only negative I've ever had is a power outage, which is very rare. I've had my PS4 corrupted to the point of needing to be completely wiped & reinstalled. The PS5 SSD seems much more resilient in that regard. No full crap-outs yet.

Noppe i put it always put the PS5 out, Its only in stanby when i wanna charge my controllers.. For the rest its out...just as my TV my and the tv provider box and al my other devices that have a standby option. I dont want to waist energy....

Reaper22_109d ago

It's probably because they don't have a quick resume feature like the Xbox has. It's one of the things I like about the xbox.

__y2jb109d ago

That’s surely the other way around? Last time I checked the Xbox had no rest mode feature.

109d ago
GamerRN109d ago

Xbox absolutely has a "rest mode", has since Xbox One. When was the last time you checked?

hiawa23109d ago

Um, Xbox does have rest mode, quick resume, or you can turn the console completely off.

__y2jb108d ago

Last time I checked was on the xbone and it didn’t.

babadivad108d ago

How can something so blatantly incorrect have so many up votes? 😂😂

Nope not at all. In fact, I like seeing the home page. And the SSD on PS5 is lightning fast. So you click your game and you’re in.

What? If you rest while in a game (offline, of course), it definitely starts right back up in that game.

*** It can't enable the feature across multiple games simultaneously either. You can't switch between multiple games on the fly like you can on xbox.***

Zero bearing on the discussion of rest mode for starting up the game you last played. Not sure how having the ability to swap between two games quickly would at all impact using rest mode to immediately get into the last game you played.

Reaper22_109d ago

Meh, doesnt matter. Just pointing out a few facts. Some people think they're the same but there is a difference. It's still something I think Sony should adopt. That power down percentage would probably drop drastically.

RauLeCreuset109d ago

"Meh, doesnt matter. Just pointing out a few facts."

Pointing out a few facts doesn't mean you have a decent argument.

Saying that half the users aren't using rest mode because PS5 doesn't have Xbox's quick resume feature seems like a stretch to inject quick resume into the conversation.

The reason andy85 gave for shutting all the way down sounds more plausible than the idea that half the users are probably shutting down because there's no quick resume. Wouldn't the extended time it takes to start up instead of resuming from rest be counterproductive to shutting down because there is no quick resume?

VariantAEC105d ago

@Reaper22_
Quick Resume ≠ Rest Mode
The former allows swapping between apps rapidly after allowing their RAM contents to be dumped to storage while the latter keeps RAM contents active in a deep sleep.

PS5 also has a task switcher feature that allows small apps to be brought up instantly while playing a game. At most you can run a game, either Spotify, Apple Music, or the USB music player and the PS5 gallery app together plus one pinned window. The PS5 doesn't struggle with this, but it's not as flexible as Xbox Series regarding multitasking, not that these auxiliary features are really important to most gamers.

VariantAEC105d ago

@RauLeCreuset
What most Xboxers forget is PlayStation was the first to deploy a "Quick Resume" function with PSP Go. It was called "Game Pause" and kept one game in the extra 32MB of RAM Go had over all the other PSP models so you could play a totally separate game. You could pause one game play another and put PSP in sleep mode keeping both in memory. Turning the PSP Go off, didn't clear the paused game from RAM meaning you could still resume a paused game after cycling the console's power.

The only thing that could clear a paused game from memory other than deleting it or overwriting it, by pausing another game, is when the battery is allowed to run completely flat. This means you get no response when trying to power the console up. If you get the battery too low screen when powering PSP Go up your paused game is still saved so long as you charge the device or don't disconnect the console's battery pack (which required tools unlike other PSP models).

I can turn on my console from cold and be in game in 20 seconds. It's really not that. I just don't like leaving Electronics on overnight

Kekewei109d ago

Nonsense I have been using rest mode since ps4/x1 days.
Quick resume maybe suit for xbox gamers, bc most of them invest heavy time in game pass, and just like netflix users, they like killing time in finding out which they really like and play several games at the same time...But for me, I can only focus on 2 games at most, quick resume is a total waste of system resource.

That's..... odd, aside from paranoia about things using electricity (it uses so little it's basically negligible) there's no downside to having it enabled that I know of.

I can't remember if it's on by default out of the box? if not then it's probably just that people don't know about it or can't be bothered to enabled it.

The_Algorithm109d ago

No enabling needed it's a feature available right out of the box, you just simply choose it as an option when shutting down the console.

Becuzisaid109d ago

If you lose power while the PS5 is in rest mode can cause corruption of files. It's happened once to me.

nitus10109d ago

This is no more different than a PC. Basically when you restart the operating system will rescan the storage and fix any corruption. Of course in the case of any computing sytem if the corruption is severe you may have to recover from your backups.

badz149108d ago

had power downs several times but never corrupted files. the PS4 and 5 just boot up and rescan the drives and they just work.

there was this one time on the PS4 when I had corrupted files. turned out, there are bad sectors on the external HDD. it was a big oof moment for me as it was a 4TB storage. tried several methods to repair the bad sectors using the PC, it didn't work, sadly!

Master-Tonberry108d ago

That was certainly an issue when the PS5 first launched but it was quickly patched and isn't really a problem any more. It can still happen in VERY rare circumstances, but that's also the case with Xbox, Switch and PC (or any older console that writes data to some form of storage.

VariantAEC105d ago

Happened twice to me. I think PS changed how PS5 accesses content which is likely how it didn't happen the 3rd time my PS5 lost power... but it was actively running the 3 times the power was cut. I wound up investing in a back-up power device that the PS5 is now connected to. I also back-up my system data more often with hard drives that have massive capacities typically over 5TB. My PS5 has 7TB of storage currently.

A lot of people are truly tech ignorant. We've not seen as much advancement in software tech because they would lose a massive portion of the population with things they didn't understand. I mean, we're talking about people who still get scammed by random text messages and random phone calls here. People aren't as cognizant of technology as most people think. My nephew thought telling his grandmother to buy him a $35 PC case was the same as buying a full desktop PC. He's 11. He uses tech devices every day and he didn't know that.

anast109d ago

That's shocking, even to someone who is mostly tech ignorant.

Putte109d ago

What's the point of rest mode other than using more unnecessary power. It's so fast to just fully turn it on and off.

The_Algorithm109d ago

It uses less power in rest mode than if it's left on and paused plus zero load of the game. Say you're playing GT7 and in the middle of a ten lap race and have to leave at seven or eight laps in, if you shut off the system you lose all the time you spent getting to that point, you could pause the game and walk away but that consumes more power. Alternatively in rest mode you can pause your game and select rest mode from the shutdown options which will put the system in a low power usage state and when you come back and turn the system on instead of reloading the game it will already be active and waiting for you right where you paused it no loss of any game time regardless of the game. Really is a great feature.

Putte109d ago

Yes but even less power if it's turned all the way off. That's what I'm saying.
The people who needs to leave in the middle of a game and not coming straight back after some minutes are slim.
If i need to leave for many hours i just turn it all the way off. And restart from a check point. No problems.
I think alot of people do the same as the article States. The numbers don't lie. Just turn it off. Just easier if you don't want to think about anything.

RauLeCreuset109d ago

Restarting from a checkpoint does not sound easier than putting it into rest mode.

Gamist2dot0109d ago

And I like the nostalgic experience of the PS1 bootup screen every time lol.

clevernickname109d ago

It's not fast. You have to wait for the console to start and then load your game. All of that takes time, and rest mode uses reduced power anyway. With rest mode, the console starts immediately right into the game I was playing.

It's stupid not to use it.

nitus10108d ago

The PS5 in rest mode consumes between 0.38 Watts and 4.2 Watts depending on what you want the PS5 to do.

From Sony web site: https://www.playstation.com...

> Rest mode ‘low power use’ setting is the default standby setting on PS5 and consumes 0.38 W
> Rest mode, supplying Power to USB Ports is 4.0 W
> Rest mode, stay Connected to the Internet is 1.2 W
> All of the above "rest modes" consume 4.2 W

So to sum up, the maximum rest usage of the PS5 is 4.2 W. Yes that will break the power consumption bank considering that average led light will be in the order of approximatly 10W and I have not covered the old style filament globes if you still use them. There are many more electrical devices that would consume much more than 4.2W (Fridge is just one example since that is 24x7).

Master-Tonberry108d ago

What are you talking about? Electricity is bloody expensive here in the UK but even at the maximum consumption of 4.2w that you stated it would only cost £7 if left in standby mode all day everyday for a year! 😅

It's £0.02 per day, no bank is being broken.
