Russia admits its homegrown consoles can't match the PS5 or Xbox Series

In brief: Russia's quest to develop homegrown consoles that are made by Russians and enjoyed by Russians doesn't seem to be having a lot of success. According to new reports, two machines are being created: one isn't very powerful, and the other is a $45 device that streams games from the cloud.

Back in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the government to create Russian stationary and portable game consoles, along with operating systems and cloud-based game delivery systems for the machines.

With Russia heavily sanctioned and looking to promote its own products, one of its in-development consoles is powered by the Elbrus processor. Developed by Moscow Center of SPARC Technologies (MCST) and based on the VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) architecture, Elbrus is designed primarily for domestic applications in critical infrastructure, defense, and other sensitive areas.

Elbrus processors' performance can't match high-end CPUs from Intel, AMD, and Arm, but they are adequate for enterprise and government work. The CPUs certainly aren't going to power a console that can compete with the PS5 or Xbox Series

Putting that aside, you mean to tell me Microsoft and Xbox are on their b.s. crusade to be everywhere and everyone's calling for no boundaries on consoles being on console neutral..... And you're not going to support this? You see how hypocritical the games industry is?

The United States has all this crap going on from every angle on: This group matters and everyone else apparently does it. You're racist but we're not. And we're gonna suddenly put up fences for this? WTH!?!

I'm STILL for console exclusivity. It generates a lot more competition and produces better quality. But, because Xbox screws up and is going down, now everyone has too? PC gamers aren't gonna care, they never have. What if this console gives total control to gamers? I have a PS4, a PS4 Pro, and a PS5 as well as a PS3 in the same house, all hooked up. ONLY one of them can be on at a time and I'm locked out of them if the Wifi isnt going. That's what Xbox pushed for when first announcing the Xbox One and PS4 fought it.... Maybe perhaps with disc-based games while Xbox was talking digital, but PlayStation is doing the same thing. To play digital games, I have to be connected and only one console can be on at a time, that's now owning what we buy. If ANYONE right now allows you to play how you want, because we're not all criminals out there to pirate and illegally share games, why do we have to suffer?

Point still stands, everyone is acting like their console neutral until the threat comes in and suddenly everyone's back on their side. I'm STILL for exclusives, I love em, they make gaming better and all these ports to PC is fubar!

Like you have Japan and arguably the US making consoles, and thats really It, OUT OF HUNDREDS of countries, a couple- and they make them in CHINA.- Then Another country says "We should try to make some gaming hardware, lets make a first attempt" and people jump all over it to mock it- who gives a fuck- Where is France's CPU in their domestic console, where is Turkeys CPU, where is Indias CPU... Does Australia have a domestically made CPU driven console? Nah? So a country starts like months ago and a couple private companies come up with "something"... If they wanted to just do what american and chinese companies have been doing they could just use regular old off the shelf foreign components and make all the same consoles and handhelds as everywhere else- but theres no point in that since you can buy a playstation or xbox in any store there, or build a PC.

What's the point of every small country wasting tons of money to develop their own CPU when there are partners who can already do it better and for cheaper? Working together is what collaboration is all about, something authoritarian regimes often struggle with.

Additionally, the Elbrus CPU isn’t something hastily put together in the past few months. It has been developed and improved upon since the late 1970s.

Also since when hasn’t the internet mocked things with hateful or stupid comments? Don’t let it distract you. I don’t like the Russian government, but I would never hate all Russian people because of it, never. I hope some of you feel the same way about other foreign countries, cause in the end, we’re all just living our lives, just like you do.
