PS5 Best-Seller in the US in November, Switch Outsells Lifetime PS2 Sales

The PlayStation 5 was once again the best-selling console in the US in November 2024 in terms of units sold and dollar sales, according to figures from Circana (formerly The NPD Group). Circana includes the dates for the four-week period of November 3 to 30.

The Nintendo Switch came in second place in terms of units sold and dollar sales, while the Xbox Series X|S came in third place in terms of units sold and dollar sales.

Switch overtaking PS2 is kind of insane.

Granted, the Switch has been around for a while and there's good incentive for multiple people in a household to have their own, but that's still genuinely impressive.

Gaming is also much bigger now then it was, and more portable leaning. But it still has many millions before it surpasses the 160 million total lifetime. And switch 2 will be out. Currently sitting at 146 million lifetime.

The PS2 was on the market for 7 more years after the PS3 released, which means the Switch will do the same for at least the next few years.

Not if you follow how well nintendo consoles do after the successors come out... which is what I was saying without saying it. Switch has already dropped off a cliff and may be lucky to get 10k consoles a month after 2 comes out, bc is a double edged sword. Once numbers drop that low it wont matter how long they keep it available...if Nintendo drops the price low enough maybe more. If it's BC with switch games maybe less than 10k. From April to september they only sold 2 million. The rumors of switch 2 will only hurt it's holiday numbers even more. It really does depend on how cheap they make it.. cheap enough and sure it can surpass ps2...Nintendo doesn't do cheap though. This is all assuming it comes out in spring though as switch did.

So no there really isn't any historical reason the switch can match the ps2's tail. Look more at the wii than the ps2. Exponential decay. That said, I've been wrong before about the switch.

The PS2 in the US was on the market for 6 years before the PS3 came out and 13 years total before being discontinued. It was also the cheapest DVD player on the market for multiple years. Basically, most factors cancel each other out.

Ps2 really had some legs thanks to countries like Brazil where games like FIFA still released regularly while the rest of the world was busy talking about the ps4

I mean I only really know of the master system and mega drive that had that kind of success there

Switch is really a incredible little system I didn't buy one until two years ago because I was always like nah it's underpowered etc but then I did and I regret not jumping sooner. I know some families have up to three of these consoles hanging around and really to me that's always been unheard of having more than one console per family was always the norm until the switch

This would assume that the 145m users are all unique entities. You gotta remember there are a lot of repeat buyers for switch. Between base, lite and oled a lot of people have double if not triple dipped. There are 3 switches in my household, my buddy bought 2. And loyalist to the brand easily can have 3-4.

When switch 2 drops it would likely benefit them to NOT push the older system with newer content crippling the views of a newer device with subpar performance.

You would expect the PS5 Pro sales to be down more than 12% considering that the prices is almost +100%. Next year should be the year of the Pro with the release of GTA 6. Even then you would not expect the PS5 Pro to hit 20% of the total PS5 sales with that price tag.

Fantastic seeing MvC Collection end up in the Top 20 for the whole month. I'm hoping this leads to a re-release of MvC3 and MvC4 going into production, as well as further Capcom collections (the 3D fighters in one pack would be great as well as including Tatsunoko vs Capcom)

Also, the list is a bit incomplete because the Switch titles don't include their digital purchases, which means they're most likely a few spots higher.

It shows how badly Microsoft has fumbled the last 11 years, since the DRM fiasco in 2013, they never recovered, because they never tried to recover until they started up buying major publishers, even then, it didn't work.
