Onimusha's Surprise Return Is Great News, But Do Enough People Care?

People who only play the same 3 big franchises every year also existed during PS2 days and they weren't playing Onimusha back then either. I don't see anything inherently outdated about the IP. They just need to show more and put some marketing behind it.

I think this is not the point I am making. I say that these really old dormant franchises outlived their audience, they waited too long. New generation already have their IPs they stick to.

I do and I’ll be pissed if this doesn’t sell well. I have been wanting a return to this series and not just HD Remasters or a Remske. This absolutely looks amazing.

A lot of what that article talks about sounds familiar, doesn't it? I wasn't trying to bring down the series just trying to put its release in perspective.

And like I said, I do hope that the series return is successful. Especially if it goes down the Horror Samurai Vibe. But it pays to temper expectations, even if Capcom won't. And it pays to be pragmatic about things is all.

I think the idea of a franchise not being able to exist because other franchises took the concept further is dumb. We don’t even know what the Onimusha game will be like. It could be its own unique take on the genre. Aesthetically it already stands out.

Every game has to start somewhere. So, it has just as good a chance to carve its name out amongst others. Relevance would only matter if it stayed exactly like its PS2 design. The game that it is, is what will determine its success, not what it once was.

The same can be said for any game franchise new or old. The Souls games weren’t popular right off the bat. So, the point is dumb. No game is guaranteed an audience will care for it. FF7 Rebirth was considered the most anticipated game of 2024 at the TGA’s and that sold less than FF16, which also failed to meet expectations.

Maybe that’s how you cope with disappointment, but from what I’ve seen the game is one I’m hyped for. Only time will tell whether this meets sales expectations, but it has 0 to do with sh*t already being on the market and the argument of whether or not people are interested is literally applied to every game released… so I don’t see how it matters whether it’s reviving an old franchise would matter or if this were a new IP. Look at Intergalactic, new IP, where’s the article on whether people care?

I'm a fan, going to replay Onimusha 2 soon. CAPCOM should have a bundle Remaster of all 4 previous mainline games.

I think I care enough for like 10 people, so if you've got 100K people with the same energy, it's a great start.

Capcom has been pretty smart about what they're doing and Onimusha is a game for an entirely new generation that never knew how awesome those games were.

As I see it, a franchise that modernizes itself very well does not need to worry about selling on name recognition. It may as well be a new IP at this point. Same with Okami.

With an even larger market today and people wanting something "new", the reinvention of an old franchise might be wm the winning formula. Given the popularity of Ghost of Tsushima, the time feels right.

In fact.... If Sony really moves to acquire Kadokawa (it's looking more likely by the day), I think we're getting a new Tenchu too.

Depends on what gameplay looks like. If I remember right, Onimusha has a similar gameplay to RE originally? Static camera, prerendered backgrounds, etc. Obviously the remake will be evolved in some way, but what's the actually style of the game? Stealth action? Soulslike? Action RPG? Need to know more. Right now Ghosts of Tsushima occupies this spot in my life.

It’s Capcoms Job to bring in a new audience, meanwhile the old fans can enjoy one more opportunity with a beloved franchise and do their best to entice newcomers with their excitement.

Us older gamers who enjoyed Onimusha definitely care. I’m sure it will appeal to some gamers who haven’t played it but will it be enough? There is no way to know until it releases

Depends on how Capcom reintroduces Onimusha. I was a fan (3 is one of my favorite games on PS2) but the gameplay must be modern to get the attention of action games today.

Love Capcom since the 8/16-bit and arcade days especially given what they have done with the RE Remakes in off years and new RE games in between, so hell, yes, I care as a life long gamer Capcom fan.
