Chinese Players Review-Bomb Baldur's Gate 3 on Steam After Black Myth: Wukong Loses GOTY at TGA 2024

Chinese players review-bomb Baldur's Gate 3 on Steam after Black Myth: Wukong loses Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024.

Lol, let's not forget that the winner is chosen by the general public. 🤦‍♂️

-Foxtrot181d ago

10% of the general public

The fan voted one is Players Choice which Black Myth did win but this years Players Choice showed why we don't give the public the vote with the main awards. The top 5 out of like 30 games or something came down to Black Myth, 3 Gacha games and DLC / An Expansion. Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII, Metaphor, Silent Hill 2 etc didn't even get to the last round.

People online are doing dumb stuff still. Got it.

TheColbertinator181d ago

For me personally I stick to making comments on N4G instead.

Ninver181d ago

That's as far as it should go

No one tell him. Just let him be happy.

Black Myth Wukong is a mediocre snoozefest at best. The anti-woke brigade reception really inflated the Chinese perception of how the west views this game

UnbreakableAlex181d ago (Edited 181d ago )

Chinese games are shallow AF. They went through a lot of censorship filters and are not allowed to use politics or criticize any status quo power dynamics. I'll take woke games any day of the week over Chinese games. However if the gameplay is really good I'd play them.

goken181d ago

Most people in the west think this of China. But what if you have been misled? Have you ever considered that? If you go to the Chinese segment of the internet, you will see people talking smack about the government all the time. It’s really not what you think.

But you are absolutely right regarding the vast majority of chinese games. Which is why this one stands out. Because for the first time a Chinese developer put in actual effort to make something good. The game is not for everyone, but credit where credit is due

SimpleSlave181d ago (Edited 181d ago )

@goken - You clearly misunderstood @UnbreakableAlex3h's point. Then, for some reason, created a strawman to attack in order to make a point that they didn't make.

The comment was very obviously directed at the entertainment industry and their inability to criticize the central government. For obvious reasons.

SMH...

Christopher180d ago

@goken - anything outside of China that is popular and criticizes the Chinese government does tend to result in action against said targets. Randos on the Internet in China who are just talking and not seen outside? Who cares. Major international star or form of media? Yeah, they definitely will be heavily critiqued. It's not like there aren't multiple stories of this happening. Let alone, how's that Tiananmen Square memorial going?

Having said that, while the U.S. is more 'free' in that regard, we honestly do similar and just call it Cancel culture, inspire hatred against others, use the legal system to shut down dissent in favor of the powerful, and take words and twist them to mean something they're not to spread that hatred for things even further. So, just two sides of a very similar coin.

Inverno181d ago

That speech at the end of the awards was legit, how the flip can anyone take it as a jab to any one game?

Christopher180d ago

Remember when BG3 came out and tons of higher up people in development were like 'this isn't normal, so don't expect us to do this, just expect what we've been putting out so far.' His continued speaking out against why people make games and how they will keep doing what they have is a threat to the normalcy of the industry as it allows people to continue to compare what they put out versus what these others are putting out.

Elantregaless181d ago

Whats with the weird anti asian racism these days?

goken180d ago

I wouldn’t say there’s much anti Asian racism, it’s mostly just anti Chinese, then it spills over a bit since many people in the west can’t tell the difference.

Elantregaless178d ago

Thats how racism works. Racist falsely associate some imaginary property due to prejudice in order to attack a demographic.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Is The Kind Of Game That Makes Me Wish I Could Play One Thing At A Time

I respect people who can dig deep on one game, and only one game, but I can't do it.

I used to play multiple games at a time but because of the time constraints I have I don’t have a choice but to play one game at a time or I’ll end up with some unfinished games. I like to get platinums for the games I enjoy the most so it can take me a long time to get to the next game.

It definitely takes some will power as I always have a stack of games I want to play at all times. But most of the games I play are really good and I am fully immersed when I’m playing a single game at a time.

raWfodog19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Same here. I’ll focus on a game that I really enjoy and get the most out of it before moving onto the next title. That is why I have a massive backlog of games now.

Armaggedon19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Same for me. I play so many games, currently playing oblivion, expedition, blades of fire, bg3 with friends , avowed, and Nioh 2. After learning more about myself and gaining mastery, I have developed an ability to get fulfillment from a game without needing to “complete” it. Unless of course, a game hooks me for the story, in which case I have to complete it to see what happens. I have discovered that in terms of gameplay, one can get most if not all of the expected experience in about 25% of progress through play.

Ninver19d ago

Sounds like renting is the best way to go in your case. No point in buying games you won't complete.

Armaggedon19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

It depends on what one deems as “complete.” For some, it is completing the story, and for others it is completing all tasks and objectives. Usually when this happens, people will feel “that was fun, whats next.” There is always a whats next. Cant think of anyone that has consumed media and thought “I am completely satisfied and will not need to play or watch another. I have simply mastered this “hunger” if you will. I am able to get so far in a game and then move to another without needing to reach a certain requirement. A benefit of this is that I do not get bored, as that game I didn’t beat still has mystries to unravel and new things I haven’t done.
