Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Announcement Trailer

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the newest franchise in development for the PlayStation 5 console from Naughty Dog, the studio behind acclaimed series like The Last of Us and UNCHARTED. Set thousands of years in the future, Intergalactic puts players into the role of Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit.

robtion136d ago

Ellen Ripley is great. This character, not so much.

Mr_cheese135d ago

@robtion

How can you say this character isn't great when you know barely anything about them?

porkChop136d ago

Yeah I'm very interested in this one. I love the look of it. The retro futurism and the real world branding reminds me of stuff like the original Blade Runner. I've been wanting Naughty Dog to go space sci-fi, and while this isn't exactly Savage Starlight I'm still into it.

pwnmaster3000135d ago

I don’t think it’s space unfortunately.
I read is about her getting stuck on a planet and she needs to escape.

All I wanna say is...another game with female lead? Witcher 4, Split Fiction, this...come on...

Can't they just make a gritty Nathan Drake adventure in space instead??

gold_drake135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

i dont mind female leads in games, god knows ive played alot of games where a femal character was the main protag.

however, i dont want them to be those weird feminist karen written characters.

just write them like actual people and not like that.

robtion136d ago

Not a fan of the character design at all. Why can't developers make feminine looking female characters?

Kyizen136d ago

Cause they wouldn't be a space bounty hunter

TOTSUKO136d ago

@robtion
Just say she isn’t your type lol

cironn136d ago

@Kyizen Not a good excuse. Samus? Faye from Cowboy Bebop, the inspiration for this game? Dizzy from Starship Troopers?

I have nothing against this character and/or design, but clearly they could have made her more feminine if they wanted, they just didn’t.

porkChop136d ago

Why can't developers make buff female characters? Why can't developers make the characters they want to? We've had decades of nearly nothing but super feminine and sexualized women. And while I don't mind that I also don't mind seeing the opposite.

TheNamelessOne135d ago

@porkchop

I'll take your comment at face value.

The average man, in reality, is more physically capable than the average woman.
In media they are more and more championed BY adding to them more masculine features, despite the fact that that isn't the reality for the majority of them.

Why is calling that out so egregious?
Why can so few, in the modern day, actually write strong female characters without, well, just making them more masculine?

porkChop135d ago

@TheNamelessOne

Nothing in that trailer was realistic and all of that was fine, but you see a woman that isn't a barbie doll and suddenly it's "but what about the realism?"

Looking back at the trailer she isn't even unrealistic. Her muscles are just *slightly* toned and she has a shaved head. If that's so unrealistic then I'd hate to see what a "normal" woman looks like to you. Like this isn't even remotely similar to Abby.

ravens52135d ago

It's Amandla Stenberg without hair. What are you on about? Lol. Literally a real life female.

I think this topic touches on a larger debate about creative direction and audience expectations. Twenty years ago, gaming leaned heavily into exaggerated, often idealized designs—male and female alike—that were meant to embody escapism. Female characters were frequently designed with exaggerated beauty, and while it did cater to a certain demographic, it often overlooked depth and representation for other players.

Fast forward to today, and it feels like some games have overcorrected. The pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction that we’re left with character designs that seem intentionally drab or less appealing, almost as if beauty itself is seen as problematic. It feels like a missed opportunity to strike a balance—celebrating diverse aesthetics while still creating characters that are aspirational or visually striking.

Take Star Wars Outlaws or Dragon Age: the changes are noticeable, and many players feel it takes away from the immersion when character design no longer aligns with the wide variety of people we see in real life. It’s not about saying every female character needs to look like a supermodel, but rather acknowledging that beauty exists in many forms, and there’s room for all of it in gaming.

Games like Stellar Blade show that you can have visually stunning characters without sacrificing storytelling or depth. Instead of labeling critiques as "sexist," we should encourage open dialogue about what makes a character resonate with players—whether it’s their look, personality, or narrative. After all, gaming is about escapism and creativity, and there’s room for all kinds of representation without swinging to extremes

senorfartcushion135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

Regardless of industry trends, it's the choice of the developer.

And also, technically speaking, it might just be that the technology has caught up to developer expectations and they can mocap instead of resorting to making exaggerated characters.

Exaggerations are also creative whike offering a sense of design freedom, sure. If you're interested, make your own game. That's all this will come down to:

Don't like it; don't buy it.

Make your own game and litter that game with whatever characters you'd like.

Stellar Blade is a good example of the reaction being politicised by people. I didn't like the gameplay of that game so I've been called "woke" by fans of the game. The gameplay was affected for me because I don't have vibration on my controller, making the combat feel less responsive that most other games of the Souls genre. Dark Souls feels satisfying to olay regardless of controller vibration.

All it says to me is that people make simple situations into culture wars.

It said to me that there are more lonely people in the world. People who fight for more games to show them fake boobs and butts because they can't get any of that in the real world.

crazyCoconuts135d ago

@senior - you complain that people stereotyped you due to a position, then you proceed to stereotype people due to their position.

anast135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

Seriously, it's impossible to believe someone actually thinks this way. This is an ignorant take. The art follows the similar direction as Uncharted and Last of Us of which are in completely different universes than Steller blade. And if you follow the Shift Up games you will see they have a pattern of art direction too. And if you follow Ubisoft they have a pattern too.

RiseNShine135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

I don't agree with you, it's not an overreaction to compensate extremely attractive designs from before, it's modern feminism declaring beauty as a form of patriarchy oppression, and western developers accepting that paradigm and including it in their games. Just look at many other non-western countries were modern feminism isn't so dominant, from Japan, to China, Korea or Russia, they have no issues portraying beautiful females at all in their games. For example, no videogame market is older than Japan, they have showed beautiful females since their most early games, and yet they have no issues with female beauty in videogames nowadays (or other media like manga or anime), so it's not a matter of previous representation of female beauty being compensated, but modern feminism new paradigm of beauty in the West being added in the games being developed here.

neutralgamer1992135d ago

Senor

When we don't like it and we don't buy it we are called sexist and misogynistic. Developers vision is correct and so is creative freedom but if the game doesn't sell and studio closes don't complain to your customers

So many gamers don't get it. You can't have it both ways on one hand you're telling people don't buy it if you don't like it and when those people are fired in studio closes then you blame the gamers make up your mind because Gamers sure have made up their minds that we are not going to support this nonsense moving forward

crazyCoconuts135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

I'll add that most people wouldn't debate that having a female or minority as the protagonist makes that game more enjoyable/comfortable/approach for female or minority players.
If that is true, it's undeniable then that having a white male protagonist does the same for white male gamers.

While we've been conditioned to feel this is taboo to talk about, it's just human nature - a part of what makes games enjoyable is our ability to suspend disbelief and channel ourselves through the protagonist as an alter-ego - more so than we do in a movie. It's easier to do that with a character that reminds us of ourselves.

So I have no issue with decisions about who to cast for whatever role, etc, etc. But I'm also not ashamed to admit that I will enjoy certain characters more than others because... I'm human.

Christopher135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

***Fast forward to today, and it feels like some games have overcorrected. The pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction that we’re left with character designs that seem intentionally drab or less appealing***

I mean, I personally much prefer more realistic representation of characters in general. Not to say having beautiful and appealingly buxom characters aren't realistic, but there's a point where you only encounter that. There's also the artistic direction where it throws the stuff in your face. It stops becoming "this woman is beautiful" and "here's all these animations and camera angles that are selling this specific body part" and that becomes more than just character design and more about how you're selling them.

I definitely think we have a current industry that promotes both. I mean, how many gatcha games are there focused on such things? Still a lot of games where the focus is on that with action as well (they just announced HoverGrease 2 as a new game with that heavy focus for example). But I think the issue is that the people who 'want just that' are upset that most major games are aimed at a much larger market than just them and don't focus on 'just that'.

And then there's how they communicate it. They call realistic designs ugly and constantly complain that it isn't what they want. Anyone who shares an opinion otherwise is called names in some places (N4G has a big problem with opinions on this). Not to say you don't have people calling them virgins as well, but they typically are 'responsive' to them and don't lead with that, like others do against realistic designs.

I really wish we just accepted that both exist and that's fine. I have my preferences. You have yours. We are both getting that and we don't need it to be just one way in all games.

robtion135d ago

Well said. I agree with you. While sometimes annoying I do find it interesting from a social psychology perspective, not just in relation to the gaming industry but in the world in general, as I think the phenomenon you are describing is more widespread.

I wasn't that impressed by the trailer but time will tell how the game turns out. I'm not a huge fan of Neil Druckmann. I was more excited for ASTRO BOT winning GOTY

Tacoboto135d ago

I'm kinda stunned at the weird product placement.

Adidas, Porsche, and Sony front and center in a space bounty hunter game at least 600 years in the future?

And the point of the game is escaping a planet or system that's been isolated for 600 years. Might as well have her crack open a Monster.

For the creators of all these wonderful franchises that have been wildly successful, I hope this isn't a sign of branded mtx being heavily tied to the game

goken135d ago

I’m not bothered by the product placements. In fact it makes it more relatable for me, since I actually see some of these brands around me.

Also if developers find a way to make some extra revenue without compromising gameplay or story, why not?

Tacoboto135d ago

Just so we're clear, you're totally in favor of in-game advertisements?

Palitera134d ago

Are you totally against?

Tacoboto134d ago (Edited 134d ago )

Multiple times in the announcement trailer for the first new IP from one of gaming's most prestigious studios in over a decade, yes, I am 100% against that.

I can't imagine anyone here taking kindly to other games, like Starfield for instance, doing the same. "Oo it's relatable" - can't wait for EA and Ubisoft to read that either.

Go outside and touch some grass. Theres people from multiple different backgrounds everywhere you go.

Is it that far from the realm of possibility that one random one would feature as a protagonist for a video game?

Eonjay6d ago

Some people really belive that gaming is a white male activity and that the costumers only want to see white males in games and especially in leading roles. It's screwed up because not only is gaming not an exclusively white male activity, but not all white males feel that way. So its really casting disparagement on all. Also its weird and mentally unhealthy.

neutralgamer19926d ago

Eonjay

It's great to see the gaming industry making an effort to be more inclusive and diverse—representation matters, and when it's done thoughtfully, it can genuinely enrich storytelling and character development. That said, it's also important to acknowledge the growing concern among many gamers that representation is increasingly being handled in a way that feels forced or performative rather than organic.

The issue isn’t with diversity itself—many of us, including myself as a person of color, support more inclusive worlds and characters. The problem arises when developers seem to prioritize a DEI checklist over compelling narratives, or when characters are shoehorned in with little depth or relevance to the story. When those decisions are met with valid criticism, the response from some developers and parts of the media is to label dissenters as bigots or toxic, often making sweeping generalizations that assume the criticism is rooted in prejudice rather than preference or quality concerns.

A recurring theme is the portrayal of straight white male characters as outdated or undesirable, which feels counterproductive, especially when a large portion of the core gaming audience still identifies with that demographic. While statistics are often cited to suggest a 50/50 gender split in gaming, a closer look reveals that a significant percentage of female gamers are on mobile platforms. In the realm of console and PC—the so-called "core" gaming space—the split is still much closer to 80/20 male to female. So it’s understandable that some longtime players feel alienated when the games they’ve supported for years suddenly pivot in ways that seem dismissive of their interests.

Take The Last of Us as a case study. The first game was beloved by many and sold incredibly well. But The Last of Us Part II, despite strong initial sales, saw a significant drop-off and stirred division among fans—not necessarily because of its themes, but because of how those themes were presented, and how dissenting voices were treated. When a creative lead like Neil Druckmann publicly mocks segments of the fanbase and says, “Not every game is for you,” we listened—and some of us opted out. That wasn’t hate. That was a choice.

Diversity in games should be about addition, not subtraction—about broadening experiences, not alienating the core audience. When representation feels authentic and respectful to the story and the player, it can be powerful. But when it feels like a lecture or a marketing ploy, it’s understandable why many push back. We can strive for inclusion without vilifying the people who built this industry from the ground up

Eonjay6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

You say 'A recurring theme is the portrayal of straight white male characters as outdated or undesirable'. I totally disagree. We are being told to feel that way but that is not what is happening. Diversity does not equal discrimination against straight white males. That is the grift. Please tell me how this game is attacking white men? It is not. It is simply her existing that is supposed to be the attack on white men. This is the BS. This is a form of race baiting. This is a force of fear mongering.

I don't feel attacked when I see a women, a black person, LGBT, white men... Because I don't let grifters tell me what to think. It would be like me going outside, seeing black women (which have been here this whole time) and deciding that diversity intrinsic to the world is suddenly an attack on me.

They got me once a few years ago, but as soon as I remmebered how to think for myself and question why people are repeating the same things over and over, I was able to break myself out of it. I'm sitting here watching a bunch of grown men, attack a game because the main character is a black women. And then claiming they are the once being attacked because they aren't being catered to.

Having a diverse cast is not not catering to anyone. Thats false equivalence. Whats literally happening is that people are telling gamers that diversity means they are trying to banish white men. Thats a lie. Diversity means diversity. How can you have diversity and ignore white men specifically? That wouldn't make sense. Don't buy the grift. They misinform you by telling you how to perceive the actions of others instead of letting you think for yourself.

On the other hand, here in the US. white men make up less than 16% of the population (even less if we are just looking at straight men). Thinking that they are singlehandedly responsible for holding up the entire entertainment industry is absurdly fantastical. Everyone needs get a grip. When its simply over representation. And anything that deviates from that huge over represenatiation can't be an attack.

anast6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

@1992

Let me help you a bit.

"often making sweeping generalizations that assume the criticism is rooted in prejudice rather than preference or quality concerns."

If you don't want this to happen, don't wall out the forum with quasi political nonsense. The easiest way to do this is to critique the elements of the art in question. When I watch a Shakespeare play, I don't care about the color of Hamlet and I wouldn't even care if they changed the sex of Hamlet, I am more concerned if the actor can do their job at a high level. If they can't, the play sucks. Same with games. If they can't do their job at a high level, the game sucks or it's average at best.

As for the "the white male thing", it's called alienation and you have a point. Feeling alienated can make people do crazy things. But, in the context of making games, none of this matters if the devs suck at their job.

Too bad you opted out of Last of Us 2, it's a great game.

I have my issues with the game but honestly it wasn't an absolute "woke" mess as so many people claim it was/is. A bald headed female character isn't at all woke, least not by my standards. The term is overused, and people overblow the issue and see it where often it isn't at or isn't at as much as they push it to be.

@wrapsody, calling people “ low intelligent “ then “ leftist” shows you’re not that “ intelligent “ yourself just because an intelligent person would understand some can disagree with your bias views and still remains in the middle.

You’re all so called intelligent explanation of what “ woke “ is a bunch of nonsense and anti gamer. Gamers aren’t conservatives only or dems, men or women. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it because it clearly wasn’t intended for you and that’s what an “ intelligent “ person would do. Those other gamers that like it will enjoy and support whatever dev/company.

You can’t force your beliefs down other people’s Throats and wishing companies and games to fail just because it’s “ too woke” for you. Thats not intelligent, it’s cancerous.

Oh and the good things about last of us 2 are gameplay and graphics? So your high intellect says a game with good gameplay and graphics shouldn’t be successful?? Why, because of story??.

Those devs won’t stop making their visions because everything you call woke do actually exist in this world. Accept that part like some of us did and just play what your comfortable with because enjoying the demise of a company or a game will come back n bite us.

A tenuous link between a 6 year old game and a game not gonna be released for at least another 18 months of which we’ve had 1 video of 4 months ago.

A bit weird is good, but aiming to be weird for buzz and marketing appeal can get meme appeal but might not actually translate to appealing to the people you actually want to buy your game, it might do the opposite and drive them away. After 6 years and a lot of games bought, I have never given Death Stranding a second look to buy it as I genuinely have no idea about the actual playable bit of the game and my only reference is babies in tubes, black goo and Mads Mikkelsen.

Not that it matters, it’s a Naughty Dog game so I’ll be buying it (I expect many many disagrees because it’s a bit positive about Naughty Dog at any stage after 2020)

Putte14d ago

You probably never played Death Stranding, so you will never understand
And as you said it, keep it normal around the theme of the game. So in Inregalactic, where you battle monstrous things, and you cant leave a planet because reasons, the developers cant come up with something not normal as explanation?
