Metaphor: ReFantazio Is GameSpot's Game Of The Year 2024

Gamespot: "Though Metaphor: ReFantazio is the former Persona team's first foray into high fantasy, it might also be the most grounded and deeply human game they've ever created. By weaving magical elements with universal topics--such as prejudice, poverty, grief, cycles of violence, anxiety, and the role religion and politics can play in both oppressing and empowering the people--Metaphor is able to examine humanity with some distance and through a unique lens. It poses countless questions to its players, all while admitting the answers might not be simple or absolute. And yet, it places special emphasis on one question in particular: Does fiction have the power to shape our world?"

Well deserved, i am 40 hours in and it's a masterpiece. Atlus really outdid themselves

Levii_92196d ago

I’m 10 hours in and wondering when does it finally get interesting and good.

Elda196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

LOL! I'm about 10 hrs in as well & I must say it's no Persona by no means though it has some similar mechanics, so far for me Metaphor is just an average JRPG. So far I haven't seen or played anything mind blowing. My rating so far would be a 7.5 out of 10. Maybe later in the game it'll get grander.

Armaggedon196d ago

Truth is, there is no objectively good game. Its what game hooks you in and why. I brought persona 5 and stopped two hours in.

victorMaje196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

It does get a bit more interesting but at about 40 hours in I found myself tapping x for the next dialogue line way more than expected just so I could get to the gameplay... I never liked Persona 5 and I really wanted to like this game because the setting speaks to me, but in the end I moved on to other games, maybe one day I’ll come back to finish the story.

andy85196d ago

It wouldn't bug me if it won the main one as I enjoyed it but it wasn't on the level of Rebirth or Astro Bot. It felt like a step down from Persona 5 but as long as a DLC doesn't win it.

jznrpg196d ago

I’m in the middle of it and it’s definitely worthy. The hard part of GoTY is there are at least several games that are worthy each year and sometimes more.

DarXyde196d ago

I feel like I always mention how much GS tends to align with my perspective, especially on reviews.

This is no different. Metaphor is outstanding.

Elda196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

I disagree. As far as rpg's of the year for me it's a tie between Black Myth Wukong & FFVII: Rebirth. My GOTY is Stellar Blade.

Armaggedon196d ago

Flame war alert: Nice. For me, its between veilguard and dragons dogma 2.

Flewid638196d ago

I just beat Black Myth last night and I don't recall any moment when it became an RPG.

TheNamelessOne196d ago

@elda

As long as you're really, really ... really loose with the term "RPG". As many "action-rpgs" are.

I hadn't played Metaphor until it was on GamePass and I can tell you I vastly prefer Clair Obscur. That said, I have never been a big fan of the Persona games.

andy8520d ago

Same tbh. I love persona but Metaphor felt dated to me personally. Expedition 33 definitely felt fresh.

CrimsonWing6920d ago

I could not get into Metaphor, whatsoever and I’m a huge Persona fan. I feel like Metaphor is incredibly overrated, but… and I know this is blasphemy, but I think Clair Obscur is slightly overrated as well.

I think that was on me though because everyone said it was the best thing since sliced bread and when I fired it up, I thought it was ok. I’d take Yakuza Like a Dragon, FF7 Remake/Rebirth, and Persona over it… heck I actually think Lost Odyssey is better. But to each their own.

RavenWolfx20d ago

Lost Odyssey is pretty underrated. Clair Obscur felt like a combo of Lost Odyssey, Legend of Dragoon, and some Shadow Hearts: Covenant, all amazing games that I love.

franwex20d ago

Yeah. Expedition 33 is a bit overrated. It’s cool to have a turn base RPG with a good story, I’m grateful. But it seems that the people that are more impressed don’t really play RPGs and see it as fresh air.

Armaggedon20d ago

Yeah, I think they are overrated as well, based on how highly people lift them up. People hoist clair obscur up as if it is a 15/10 game.

gurp20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I love all of the persona games, but I cannot get into Metaphor for some reason, I am trying to play it
Clair Obscur is good, but I do not like the battle system, both Metaphor and Clair have great stories
I just finished Clair yesterday
Both Metaphor and Clair are very slightly overrated

GhostScholar20d ago

People seemed to love metaphor before it came to game pass. Odd.

Levii_9220d ago

I personaly really disliked ReFantazio, couldn’t get into it and i loved P5 back in the day. Clair Obscur is much, much better IMO. It cuts all the nonsense and bloat, focuses on fun, it’s much more intuitive, waaaay more focused and much better paced and it doesn’t have incoherent anime nonsense. And i found Refantazio take on the racism and classism to be very shallow. So no i don’t agree that they are two sides of the same coin.. i mean why? Just because they’re both turn based games? Get out of here with that.

pwnmaster300020d ago (Edited 20d ago )

For me it was like demon souls to blood Bourne.
I know not the same game but it’s the best example for me.

Just like bloodborne, expedition 33 was faster and more fluid.
And metaphor, just like demon/dark souls, it’s much slower.

For me I like the faster pace combat.

gold_drake19d ago

clair obscure had a bigger impact on me personally, but both games are fantastic
