Might be a new gaming phone, rather than a handhold console, kinda like the ngage from years ago

MeteorPanda196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

l loved my ngage. Got bullied a bit for it at school but l won ppl over with how excited l was with its features. Added roms to it, ended up showing some D-heads older brother how t do it and he beat up his bully brother over being a c*nt to gamers.

Ngage was too ahead of its time - like the Vita. That handheld gt such a bad rep over the memory card butt he games were 20 dollars. Seen Switch game prices?

Gamingsince1981196d ago (Edited 196d ago )

I think samsung would be better off releasing a gaming phone like that rather than a handheld console, it would probably sell better than a standalone handheld even if it's not a super success.

Agent75196d ago

Switch 2 games will clock it at £60 most definitely.

Oni195d ago

You're a big boy now, you can use big boy words.

Agent75196d ago

Yeah, it really does look like a gaming phone, rather than a Switch clone.

This can go one of two ways:

1. Stands as a competitive product
2. Crashes and burns.

If the first outcome, this can go one of two ways:

1. Everyone prices their products and specs independently
2. Samsung adding a foldable screen is going to drive up the price and really make a mess of product pricing.

Another factor— price is going to probably be out of control in the US if the incoming president has his way with tariffs. It's a God awful idea and this can get extremely ugly.

bartfart196d ago

How would tariffs affect this product? I think you're talking out your butt

goken196d ago

What do you mean how would tariffs affect this product?
It will make it more expensive, this isn’t rocket science you know?

bartfart196d ago

@goken
Yeah what tariffs? Use your brain dummy. Maybe do a lil research it's not rocket science

DarXyde195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

I really do try to be concise because the explanation can get messy (and it's about to).

How would tariffs affect this product? The question on its own will suffice. I don't care for your accusation, but I'll explain.

Currently, I believe Samsung has manufacturing facilities in Taiwan and Vietnam, but these are for their chips and phones. More likely, they establish a new facility for making a dedicated gaming device. And even more likely than that, because these are untested waters, they'll contract a facility to manufacture them. Who's known for that? Foxconn, which is a company operating in a BRICS country.

The incoming president has already said he intends to impose as much as 100% tariffs on products coming out of these countries.

The problem is that these are across the board tariffs because the incoming president really doesn't understand tariffs. The whole purpose of a tariff is to impose them on products coming from overseas that are also made in the US. The idea is to give incentive to Americans to buy American products because the foreign alternative to the same product is more expensive. You can buy an American car for, say $15K as an example, but for a comparable foreign car, if it costs $15k in the original country, it would cost $30K in the US if we apply a 100% tariff. The tariff is not imposed on the US government—it is imposed on you, the end consumer.

You with me so far?

Now, that would make sense on very specific products... But what if it's a product that simply isn't made in the US? You'll be terrified to learn that the there is quite a lot the US doesn't make at all, but those products are subject to extreme tariffs too. By the way, this is not just only applying to completed products; it also affects parts, so the cost of living broadly is going to increase and the cost to operate a business using foreign made parts (depending on the country) will too.

Now that you've got some context, let's get to gaming. NONE of the consoles are made in the US. Not a single one. Not their parts, and not the final product. Samsung is VERY unlikely to open a new facility for gaming, knowing it's kind of a crowded market and they'd be looking at this feasibly. The lowest risk into this arena is contracting an existing manufacturer with a good record to manage that. Even if they open a manufacturing plant or have the plant opened in the US, extremely unlikely these parts are also produced in the US. Too much overhead and operating expense for the infrastructure for what amounts to a feasibility project.

In fact, I foresee three things happening if this comes to be:

1. Cost of current hardware spikes astronomically

2. Current hardware becomes anemic if not outright discontinued in the US

3. This move week accelerate the move to hardware-less gaming.

Clear enough?

goken195d ago

@bartfart

I didn’t say there would be tariffs. You asked “how would tariff affect this product “ .
Implication here is if there was a tariff what is the impact?
Thus my answer.
You’re the one that needs to use your brain. Your name bartfart not brainfart right?

Rynxie195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

So other countries (including Japan) can put tariffs to American companies, but the US can't? You do know EU countries, China and Japan to name a few, have tariffs on American companies that makes it really hard for us to compete internationally. Trump is just just trying to make things a little fair. Either these countries can end their tariffs on US companies or lower it.

It's the same crap as us Americans funding EU countries safety and these countries barely pay their 2 percent gdp share.

DarXyde194d ago (Edited 194d ago )

Except it's an across-the-board tariff being proposed, which is extremely stupid. You're not seeing the very necessary nuance here, mate.

No one is saying the US can't—we already do.

The PROBLEM is putting tariffs on products the US *does not* produce. It's not complicated at all. If it is a product that is also produced by the US, then yes, tariffs make sense. The point is to give incentive to Americans to buy American products.

Tariffs on Xboxes and PlayStations? Disaster. They don't make them in the US. If Nvidia, AMD, Intel, etc produce their chips in a BRICS country, were looking at astronomical prices.

Could you imagine paying PS5 Pro prices for a base PS5 now? RTX 4090 prices for a PS5 Pro?

goken195d ago

My friend some people just too close minded and uneducated to accept basic facts.

Regardless of political inclinations (Biden also imposed/increased tariffs). A Tariff is a tax on the importer of goods that are imported. The importer pays for it not the exporter.
So when you put a tax on something it becomes more expensive.
Really not so complicated a concept.

Whether Trump actually goes through with it remains to be seen, but the impact of a tariff isn’t up for speculation.

bartfart195d ago

@DarXyde...

So so many words and yet your argument is flawed. In order for it to be correct it would require that Samsung manufactures in China.. Which they do not. Furthermore it is even more unlikely they would start given the looming tariffs. Try again

DarXyde190d ago

Explain.

I gave you a very clear outline and you're ignoring very important points.

Again, it is not just China. That's just the example I give because they have an established manufacturer that other places don't (and AGAIN, they are extremely unlikely to invest in the infrastructure for what amounts to a feasibility project). In case you haven't been keeping up with the news, there's growing global interest in de-dollarization. The incoming president intends to punish that. This strategy would in theory push them to manufacture in a country excluded from these extreme tariffs, but that greatly assumes that such a country has a manufacturer with the infrastructure and reliability track record to manufacture this device.

And one more important point you missed in the original post:

you're foolishly coming at me as if I'm guaranteeing any of this happens. In my original post, I mention tariffs as a *potential* factor and that things *can* get ugly *if* Trump has his way.

Trump will probably realize the idea is stupid and change his mind. Obviously, I cannot guarantee this happens, but I'm telling you that if these things go into effect, this is the very likely outcome.

And in case I need to explain it, "very likely" is not the same as "definitely going to happen".

Switch 2 accessory makers are “working hard” on magnetic analogue sticks to combat stick drift

Nintendo Switch 2 stick drift is already an issue, but accessory makers are already working on magnetic joysticks.

I've never had stick drift in any controller I've ever owned. All my joycons (3 sets) from my Switch are perfectly fine. My Switch 2 ones are good. Never had a dualshock / dualsense have it (did have a dualshock get a stuck trigger once). Even my Valve Index controllers which were notorious for drift were fine for me.

Goodguy011d 23h ago

Varies. Just because you've never had one doesn't mean others won't. I've had PS, Xbox, and Nintendo controllers indeed drift on me. Remember the drift lawsuits that Nintendo has had.

Please stop trying to say that traditional potentiometers are absolutely fine when hall effect/tmr sticks are beyond superior lol, not sure why so many people keep trying to defend potentiometers when hall effects are so pro consumer.
Companies like nintendo, sony, and mcsft don't want to implement them simply because they want you the consumer to keep buying them. Most casuals will just buy a new controller if theirs difts, easy money for the big 3.
I've gone hall effects and have never gone back, can leave my controllers out absolutely fine without worry of dust ruining the sticks.

Neonridr1d 23h ago

when did I say that traditional joysticks are absolutely fine? I'm sharing my own experience here. I never said that others don't experience issues, nor that this is somehow acceptable. Strange leapfrog from A to B on that one.

People love to say it's a huge widespread issue, yet you only hear about it because the minority is vocal whereas the majority don't report anything because they are fine.

I'm happy you switched to hall effect sticks, if that's what works for you, then awesome.

Christopher1d 23h ago

Cool? Pretty sure this is for those who are having it happen. Not sure how your anecdote addresses other peoples' problems.

Neonridr1d 19h ago

people around here act like everyone will get drift. I'm willing to wager more people won't get drift than will.

Pyrofire9522h ago

lucky you. I've only had minor drift once in my L Joycon which I fixed with some card stock, but drift is an undeniable problem as a whole.

repsahj19h ago

My 2 sets of Joy-Cons from my OG Switch started to drift with just a month of use. That is why I bought Dobe Joy-Cons with just $25, and until now they are still fine. I hope this will never happen again on my Switch 2.

jznrpg15h ago

My left joy con for the OG Switch got stick drift right away as well. I never had issues with my PS5 controllers since launch until I got my kids PS5’s and they had stick drift with 2 controllers. They drop them because they are kids and although I have them wash their hands before gaming they still get gunk under them somehow. I got their controllers modded because they would have issues no matter what I have them do.

jambola3h ago

"people around here act like everyone will get drift. I'm willing to wager more people won't get drift than will."
no, nobody is acting like that, you're jsut exaggerating it and lying to downplay a problem

gold_drake36m ago

you know, i said the same thing not too long ago and then BOOM both controllers ha.

one on the moving stick and one on the look around stick.

both suck arse. ha

jznrpg22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

The tech is already there. I had a couple of my PS5 controllers modded with Hall Effect modules and they work great. They should come standard with them these days but they don’t.

OtterX22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Nyxi already made some fantastic Hall Effect controllers for Switch 1. I don't know why Nintendo couldn't have it by now if Nyxi has had for years.

spoonard19h ago

Cheap, frictionless sensors ALREADY exist. Why are they "working hard to combat stick drift"? Stick drift should be a thing of the past at this point. The technology is here...NOW. It has been...for YEARS! Why is stick drift even still spoken about? It shouldn't exist!

Chocoburger11h ago

Because its a scam for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft to sell more overpriced controllers.

jambola3h ago

because pathetic fanboys will continue to defend and support

Doomeduk35m ago(Edited 34m ago)

WD 40 if it's shagg.d anyway why not ? I ordered a new ps5 pad after Helldivers 2 and POE 2 became unplayable due to drift but in the meantime I fired a bit of WD on my balls just below my stick rotated in a clockwise fashion massaging it in so to speak and also did the pin reset thingy and all clean no drift and hit that cancel purchase button like I meant it
