They really should have had more parts to Phantom Liberty, I was ready to dive in to more DLC... it was so good I was ready to buy Phantom Liberty Part II and Part III --> but instead of making that the game company just said, oh y'all really like the DLC ok cool were not going to make any more were done.

I really don't get these game companies, you tounched up and fixed so many things in the game and then make it super fun to play and then you abandon it... What? Why..?

It did so well too... 8 million copies is crazy... Most games struggle to do 2 million on their main game, you did 8 million on DLC... I'm at a lost for words, would have loved more DLC...

mkis007197d ago

Probably because they had decided to swap their engine, so any work done is a waste of resources... doesnt really make full sense to me, but I'm not privy to their books.

DankSinatra197d ago

Because of the backlash and money spent to fix the main game itself. They were done and ready to move on. The game doesn't need 3 iterations of the DLC, it needed to not have been in the shape it was in at launch and they could have put resources to other projects related to the game.

thorstein197d ago

You're not wrong. They even promised multiple expansions at launch. Then the disastrous launch had them focus on finishing development of the game. They finally do and then they only did one expansion.

SoloZelot90197d ago

And multiplayer was promised too

HansyJ197d ago (Edited 197d ago )

I mean, I get that. They initially promised multiple DLC’s at launch but given how shit in the lounge was I get how they only came up with the one.

Ouch..! To all the people who replied about it shipping broke, I get that... I played on PS5 at launch, so I really didn't have much bugs, plus I started playing late, was trying to catch up on other games I didn't finish...

But yeah I forgot about that bad launch, I can see if that was a deal breaker for you... Trust me I get that.

I just feel like we get so few really good games, that it's a shame especially since it runs so good now and all the stuff they added and made run better, really too bad they couldn't do a little more but I guess having to change the engine and fix all the bugs was too taxing on them....

Anyway Thanks for the feedback, I guess I see now why it didn't happen.

What did they release that quarter? I mean… game sales don’t sell the same overtime as they do during a launch.

cloganart197d ago

Hence why the shift towards GaaS...

A WB Executive would look at this figure and say "Well, if Cyberpunk was a live service game we'd be selling millions every month!" like how they looked at Hogwarts Legacy and came to that conclusion........ 💀💀💀

CrimsonWing69196d ago

I’d hope they’d do some research and analytics on the ratio of successful GaaS to non-successful GaaS games. Doesn’t WB have more than a single game coming out to off-balance slumps like this? And speaking of WB and GaaS, I don’t think Suicide Squad was the answer and rumor is MK1’s expansion pass was a massive dud, so much so they’ve canceled upcoming content for it.

GaaS is not the answer, like at all. The issue is for every successful GaaS game corporate tries to chase the trend. The reality is, you start flooding the market with GaaS and it’s gonna suffocate sales just by the very nature of GaaS design.

The solution? Budget dev costs and release more than a single game in 4 years.

30M is absolutely insane. Those are Nintendo first party numbers (though Nintendo is far more impressive because their games don't hit multiple platforms).

Gamingsince1981197d ago

4 games on the switch hit 30 million or more ..........

DarXyde197d ago

1. I'm pretty sure Nintendo is far more than their Switch catalog. You must know this because you've been gaming since 1981 allegedly.

2. Super Mario Bros./New SMB/Mario Odyssey, Super Mario World, Duck Hunt, Wii Sports, every gen of Pokemon (except the last one), Animal Crossing on Switch, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild and Smash Ultimate have all either exceeded 30M, or comes close (within 5M). By comparison, no first party games on any PlayStation or Xbox reach even 25M. Kinect Adventures comes closest, followed by Spiderman on PS4 at 20M. I think my point still stands that Nintendo is really in a league of their own here.

P_Bomb197d ago (Edited 197d ago )

@DarXyde
Just to add to that, PS Blog listed HZD at 24 million in 2023. That probably includes PC. Cant remember.

pwnmaster3000197d ago

22million is missing out on phantom liberty. Shame

gigoran8197d ago

a pro patch would have increased sales a tiny bit. But it aint on their list of things to do

Tacoboto197d ago

Nah, we're good without Shimmerpunk 2077.

Releasing a Full Game On a Nintendo Switch 2 Cart Makes Sense

Begone, game-key carts. Full cartridges just work better and here's why.

Game key karts are just digital games.....why keep up the facade

Profchaos1d 3h ago

I didn't bother buying any game key carts for my system despite my preference being physical.
I brought the mkw bundle and that was a digital code but I wasn't going to pay double for the game
I got yakuza 0 digitally as the key card made zero sense to me it costs more and its just a digital game in disguise (I never sell my games anyhow)

darthv721d 3h ago

...obviously. If a game is 64gb or less, it should release on card. If it exceeds 64gb, the key card comes into play. It does suck that Nintendo wont support smaller cards, SW1 games came on anywhere from 8gb to 32gb cards. The cost of using a 64gb card for a game that would fit comfortably on a 32 or even 16 may not be cost effective for some smaller devs. Hence the use of the key card.

Then again, its taking a page out of Sony's book. They mandated the use of DVD media for all games a few years after the PS2 released. Until then, they supported games on CD. Then when it came to PS3, no game was allowed to use DVD, they all had to be bluray regardless.

Now with PS5, they only use UHD media, no regular bluray for games allowed. Even if the game is smaller than a DVD. So i can see Nintendo trying to standardize their game cards. If devs dont want to pay for the use... the key card is for them.

gigoran814h ago

why even bother buying one of the fake game cards? It's just going to be digital anyway. Save yourself the hassle of having to insert these fake cards and just buy it from the online store.

But I absolutely 100% do not agree with Nintendos take this generation. Forcing the new norm price point, and releasing a majority of their titles digitally with no sense of game preservation. Very disappointing.
