Game of Thrones is Finally Getting an Open-World RPG, With a Big Caveat

Game of Thrones fans have been clamoring for a long time for a proper AAA game dedicated to the popular franchise.

Well the trailer shows them beyond the wall and the game's name referes to the Kings Road which is a hell of a long way away. Either this is truly open world where you play a character that, at one point, becomes a member of the Night's Watch among other things he can potentially do. Or you only play certain sections at a time, as in be a member watching and playing certain storylines and settings from the TV series that play out before you as you participate alongside the likes on Jon Snow. But any game announced as launching on ios and android should automatically relegate this game to the back of your mind and to not really be thought about again. Anyone interested in a GoT true open world game should keep your expectations extremely low for this one.

What Jon Snow says at the end makes me think that you're going to have to travel throughout Westeros to gather support from the various great houses.

Except it's a mobile game so that 'journey' will just be clicking points on map screen, being teleported into combat instances and either grinding or paying to rank up your heroes in order to pass through the game.

@chronojoe fully open world games on mobile already exist. I'm disappointed that it's mobile, but it doesn't negate the possibility of a full fledged open world RPG at all. It wouldn't be the first.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Warner Brothers, you have chosen to die. You know nothing, WB. The North, and the gamers, will remember, we wanted a true RPG, not another mobile cash grab. WB may not concern itself with the opinions of gamers, but maybe it should, because we’re already at the gates. We don’t sow, but apparently, you reap nothing but our discontent. Winter is coming, and so is the backlash. What do we say to bad game design? Not today.

Honestly, this feels worse than when Bran became king. This announcement hit harder than Ned Stark losing his head but at least he kept his dignity. It feels like being hit with a Valyrian steel sword. Thanks for treating us like one of Littlefinger's clients. Thanks for nothing, WB.
