PlayStation 5 Pro Review

The PS5 Pro is an expensive but impressive console with noticeable upgrades in graphics and performance; just don’t expect it to fundamentally change the way you game.

Sonic1881174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

Just like a PC enthusiast gamer upgrading their GPU for better performance and visuals. This console wasn't designed for the casual gamer

PapaBop174d ago

With a key difference being you still have the same PC as before. With this and ultimately deal breaker for me was that I'd then need to go and purchase a disc drive too for my physical games and films.

ocelot07174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

Not all the time. A PC is not always I just need to upgrade my GPU. Last year I upgraded my platform to AM5. So it wasn't just a simple CPU swap. I had to go and buy a new motherboard and ddr5 ram as ddr4 is not compatible.

Also for people like my self. I had a ps5 slim that had a disc drive. I have it removed and ready for the pro tomorrow. The now digital console I was originally going to sell but now my nephew is hoping for a ps5 for Christmas so it's now going to him.

CrimsonIdol174d ago

@ocelot. To upgrade your CPU, yes. To upgrade your GPU, no. at worst might need a new PSU. PS5 Pro did not meaningfully upgrade its CPU (just shrunk and overclocked it a little).

Flewid638174d ago

I've never owned an Xbox, but I understand that the current version can run almost all games in 60fps, regardless of age? I feel like thats the upgraded I would've needed to buy the Pro.

Gonna stick with my PC and PS5 base model.

BeHunted174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

It's cheaper to buy a superior GPU than a PS5 Pro console; at minimum, you'll have unlock framerate and mods, and you won't have to repurchase titles that have enhanced graphics.

Tacoboto174d ago

You don't have to repurchase PS5 games to get their PS5 Pro enhancement.

And yeah it is cheaper to buy a better GPU - but that's just one piece of the puzzle. I do prefer my RTX 4070-Ryzen 5800X3D build over consoles for better visuals, but a lot of newer games run so poorly on PC that the added frames alone aren't work the added stutters, and (generally and personally speaking) the idea of playing games in the same chair I work all day in is a huge hurdle to overcome.

I will not pay full price on a PS5 Pro, but since its announcement my views are coming around on it. Its price is what it is, complaining won't change it, and the machine is *exactly* what it set out to be and it seems developers are resoundingly in support of what it provides.

GenWorld174d ago

I'd argue to even entertain the idea of this, is a casual practice. No enthusiast would fall for this.

JL2930174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

Consoles were made by design for casual gamers. You're just paying more to casually game.

senorfartcushion174d ago

It's designed for the money-wasting fool

Sonic1881174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

It will still be the best console to play GTA 6 whether we like it or not.

badz149174d ago

Yeah just like new CPUs and GPUs on PC every year. Do you know that you can still play latest games at stable 60fps at the right settings with CPUs and GPUs from before 2020?

Profchaos173d ago

Even among the gaming enthusiasts it's niche it has its place I like it and I'm glad it's here still but you have to really love your frame counting and pixel counting to be into this one and that's ok

Workshyskiver174d ago

The reality is that I know this console is largely a waste of money and I should cancel my pre-order. But who cares and especially after yesterdays nonsense I want something shiny that will put a smile on my face, regardless of how 'sensible' a choice it may not be.

jznrpg174d ago

It isn’t a waste of money. You will have a console that does some more than the regular PS5 that you can use and sell if you want to. You aren’t throwing money in trash.

S2Killinit174d ago

Yep, and its only $100 more than the xbox series x with same size ssd space. Thats the price of one game, and you are getting one powerful console thats a Playstation.

TheEroica174d ago

It's a waste of money. Let's not be silly. The side by side comparisons are hilarious.

TheKingKratos174d ago

The comparison in Alan Wake 2 videos are straight up comical

The comments too are too brutal to say the least lol

That thing is worthless

badz149174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

You trolls keep harping on the side by side comparisons when that's basically how benchmarking has always been done even on pc. What were you guys expecting? A generational leap like ps3 to ps4?

GamerRN173d ago

I was personally expecting a leap from 30 to 60 fps. Not a 30% frame rate increase. That means only a jump from 30 to 40 fps...

Long as you enjoy it, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. There are games that folks bashed and turned out good to me.

IRetrouk174d ago

Why would anyone think it would fundamentally change anything?? So fuckin stupid.

OlderGamer17174d ago

ING at it again, especialy about expensive even when you need s $2000 PC to match the PS5pro..
Remark, i will not but it, i never bought a "pro" version of ANY console, i keep the PS5..i am happy gamer with it..

MDTunkown174d ago

Consoles are better optimised, ps4 is basically an gtx660 and it still running games more than 11 years after the release of ps4 while on pc an gtx660 is useless card for last 6 years.

ZycoFox174d ago

"better optimised" yea that's why a low power device like a Deck can run Switch games much better.

True, consoles have better optimisation to a point, but it doesn't make weak hardware super powerful, it's just nonsense.

But if you have a 5+ yr old GPU then it needed upgrading like a year before at the latest.. like a last gen console is gonna run games like ass <30fps and low res at 6-8 years, most likely.. so i mean neither would be optimal at that point. Not sure why people brag that a console lasts 8 years or whatever cuz by then it's gonna be a crap experience anyway, PC already outperformed console at launch by a bit and the gap gets wider every 1-2 years with each CPU and GPU release.

S2Killinit174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

IGN is a mouth piece of MS. Always have been. And now they are even owned by an entity owned by MS if Im not mistaken. MS bought the company that owns IGN.

Flewid638174d ago

MS fans would disagree with you.

Confirmation bias is one helluva drug. lol.

QuantumMechanic174d ago

You are mistaken; Ziff-Davis owns IGN. You may be thinking of Zenimax Media, which MS purchased to acquire Bethesda Studios---but ZeniMax did not own any of these review sites.

174d ago
S2Killinit174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

@QuantumMechanic
Im not talking about Zenimax. This was recent (we are talking within past year and half). MS bought an outlet that was a umbrella for a bunch of these gaming news sites and IGN was the biggest of the bunch.

Note: I just looked and I cant find it.

Where is the time going, this is 2 now? Also, RE4 remake and Diablo 4…

Putte7h ago

Absolutely not the best Star Wars game. That's Star Wars galaxys. Survivor isn't even that good

Becuzisaid7h ago

Not sure I agree about Galaxies, but I definitely think the Jedi series is not the best.

Sonic18816h ago

So what's the best Jedi series?

Becuzisaid3h ago

@Sonic I was meaning the Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor games. Not the greatest.

If you're wanting to know what's the best series with Jedi in it? I mean KOTOR, Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy, Force Unleashed off the top of my head. Even the Episode 3 tie in game was pretty decent.

Fonsecap7h ago

Good game, terrible performance.

jznrpg5h ago

I loved the game but hated the issues. I waited over a year to play it and it still had major issues. I would have went for the platinum but with all the save bugs and other issues I didn’t even think about it

Sciurus_vulgaris3h ago

I’ve played both Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor. I think the games are good not great.
