2gig of extra ram. That's interesting.
I wonder why this wasn't revealed earlier

DarXyde206d ago

Your guess is as good as mine in wondering why it wasn't mentioned earlier. My thinking is that it simply wasn't the time to say so in a 9-minute video. Even then, Sony controls the length of their own presentations, so we're back to the question of "why", really.

I can't say I'm surprised though since PS4 Pro did the same thing: use a slower RAM handle other tasks and free up resources to get more out of the other upgrades. A 16.7TF upgrade is nothing to sneeze at either. That's greater than if a PS5 magically absorbed the GPU power of a PS4 and PS4 Pro.

But we know it's greater than that in practice and TFLOPs are largely theoretical. The utility of PSSR really frees up the GPU to do some interesting things, though I suspect it's mostly going to be used for enhanced ray tracing.

It would have been cool to see some CPU side upgrades, but fair enough. This thing is still a proper monster.

Didn't cerny say that they had freed up some ram in the vid? Honest question because I can't remember lol

darthv72206d ago

Another way of putting it is combining PS5 + Xbox One X.

dantesparda206d ago

They did the same thing with the PS4 Pro, they gave it 1GB of DDR3 to gain back 512MB of the GDDR6 for the graphics. And yes Cerny did say that its got like another 1.67GB of GDDR6X for graphics for the PS5 Pro. And the DDR memory was for the OS, although I felt like it barely mad the OS any faster.

CrimsonIdol206d ago

The freed up a bit of the expensive GPU RAM with cheap system RAM for use with the OS. no longer unified memory but that's a good thing, not like the OS needs blisteringly fast memory. They did mention that they'd freed up just enough more memory for the increase in GPU performance (or maybe that was in the leaks, but I remember hearing that)

Is that memory used to run the PSSR and PS4 upscaling?

ABizzel1206d ago

It’s for OS, the VRAM that was freed up from removing the OS from the GDDR6 is what is likely being used for PSSR and giving devs probably another +1GB to work with.

badz149206d ago

and it's DDR5 not DDR4 which is the version supported by the Zen2 CPU it's using. what the heck is going on here?

Popsicle206d ago (Edited 206d ago )

That is a great question because this is good information to have. IMO Sony has not done a very good job of marketing this console and is evidenced by how skimpy their marketing campaign has been. That said, I think this is likely strategic since it is considerably cheaper to have gaming publications and social media platforms do the bulk of the marketing for them.

I am no tech expert, but I suspect adding 2gigs of ram to the OS should offer some more headroom to provide advanced ray tracing, resolution upscaling, etc. This is good news. I will see for myself on Nov. 7th!

OpenGL206d ago

No idea but the PS4 Pro did a similar thing with DDR3. (1GB I think?)

Grilla205d ago

They added the 1gb so they could run the ui in 4k on the ps4 pro.

Makes it like the PS5 dev kit.

If true, this is why Sony keeps making them. A lot of "gamers" might complain or cry about it. But as long as these things keep making money, they will keep doing it and ignore all those complaining online

neutralgamer19925h ago

You are absolutely correct end of fbe day money talks and so far their remastered/remakes have generated a lot of money

Lightning771h ago

So y'all are more worried about a companies pockets than your own entertainment? Are you pretending to like the same game being re-realeased each year?

CosmicTurtle1h ago

Nobody said anything like this above.

Lightning771h ago

@cosmic That's pretty much implied. Keep doing the same thing because it makes the company money forget my entertainment as long as they get richer. Instead of demanding more. If this was anyone else there would be backlash and it would be real that's a fact.

In a nutshell yes that is good the game is getting more attention more than ever thanks to the show I understand and acknowledge that. I'm saying all it promotes is more re-releases and remasters from games that don't need it.

franwex4h ago

Will HBO make a season 3 without Sony? They did with Game of Thrones after all.

Scissorman2h ago

This isn't an argument for the low-hanging fruit, but this here is exactly why Sony - and others - will keep producing them. Dev costs are low. Profitability is high. It's low risk, high reward. And given the skyrocketing costs in the AAA space, projects like this help fund future titles. I don't like it, and I'd much rather Sony - and others - release new titles, but I sure as hell understand why it happens.

PhillyDonJawn1h ago

Whats the point of making new games when you can keep releasing old ones 😂 they keep buying so why not?
