Who knows how long they were working on it already, but it always makes sense to me coming up with solutions tailored along your own hardware.

From a standing start up close to DLSS is quite impressive.

And good for console gamers.

--Onilink--192d ago

They are not talking about PSSR, they are talking about Guerilla’s in house solution they decided to use instead of PSSR

dveio192d ago

Yes.

Did I say something wrong?

just_looken192d ago

@dveio

No --Onilink-- is just setting the record straight before herds of fans rush in yelling nivida is dead 4090 is trash all hail the god box ps5 pssr.

--Onilink--192d ago

You are talking about “solutions tailored to their hardware” and something good for console gamers… how exactly are you talking about a custom solution specific to Guerilla Games engine and not about PSSR?

dveio191d ago

Well, Guerilla needs hardware for it, too, don't they?

My bad if my comment assumed I was talking PSSR. Maybe I should have made it more clear I was not.

Cacabunga191d ago (Edited 191d ago )

Am i supposed to giggle and get too much excited over this?? FW is a cross gen game, technically last gen. PS4 looked great so PS5 pro won’t break a sweat to make it look way better

Impressive indeed, I think we'll get a glance of what the updated Decima engine and Guerrilla's new image treatment solution can do with Death Stranding. Kojima's studio and Guerrila are very talented and always optimizing their amazing and versatile engine. I really can't wait.

dveio191d ago

Yep.

Decima seems to be an amazing engine. I was so impressed with it not just in Horizon already, especially the Burning Shores addon. To me personally the Burning Shores is still the most impressive piece of current-gen software out there.

But also Death Stranding, yes.

You're absolutely right that Kojima has always been a technology pusher. I can't imagine what he was capable of reaching now with Death Stranding 2, especially because it's running on PS5 only.

I still very fondly remember the first presentation of his Fox Engine back in the day. This engine was SO amazing. And it still holds up. Sadly he couldn't take it with him.

I really wonder what he'll use for Physint.

anast191d ago

For sure. It's one of my favorite engines.

Babadook7192d ago

“…saying that it delivers a pristine image quality that is close to what NVIDIA DLSS can deliver on PC and considerably better than what we have seen PSSR do so far. This solution, which is reportedly in development for Guerrilla Games' next project, is likely a compute-based solution that doesn't use the machine learning hardware of the PlayStation 5 Pro”

Ok. That’s pretty strange. So Gorilla is just leaving that specialized hardware unused? Or using it elsewhere?

northpaws192d ago

If somehow they can create better graphic without PSSR, then I don't see the point of using it. But hopefully PSSR will continue to improve to a point where it will be as good as DLSS, then all games can free up resources for other things.

Jin_Sakai192d ago

So it’s better than PSSR? If so Sony should adopt their method going forward.

jznrpg192d ago

@Jin-Sakai if it’s as easy to implement as PSSR I bet they will. But it may only be a Sony used thing if it takes a decent amount of more work than PSSR

Babadook7192d ago (Edited 192d ago )

I think a big part of why it’s so clean and stable even without PSSR or AI up res is simply because forbidden west on pro has a high native starting point. It doesn’t have as much to fill in. I’m not sure if the solution is truly not using the ML hardware though as that seemed like speculation.

northpaws191d ago

@Jin_Sakai

Whatever method that is, likely only possible with the exact Decima engine.

And also better image quality than PSSR doesn't mean it is more efficient, if for some reasons they want to push for more effects on screen in the future then they cannot afford to upscale with the gpu and need to use PSSR instead. Dedicated hardware (PSSR) is always more efficient because it doesn't take away any resources.

I’m guessing whatever their solution is is built specifically for Decima. It’s cool but it’s almost a little odd for one of Sony’s own companies to immediately upstage their hot new tech. I guess it’s good in a way though, Sony let them do their own thing to get the best result and didn’t try to force them to use PSSR when they had a better in house solution.

I Watched the Leaked Horizon AI Tech Demo Through My Fingers

Maybe I'm turning into "old man yells at cloud."

So lame, a tech demo was conducted to test new technology. This is nothing new; they've been doing this since the 1980s. There have been thousands of tech demos that led to nothing. That said, AI is here to stay, and it will eventually find its way into games in one form or another. It's time to stop the overly dramatic reactions and accept reality.

Christopher46d ago

Talk about a 180 midway through your argument. Perhaps that 180 is why people are talking about it?

darthv7246d ago

What he said was not wrong though... AI is here and being used more and more is different industries. Its not like it is going away anytime soon.

Christopher45d ago

@darth: Where did I say he was wrong other than expressing that it's this thinking that people are talking about it? He complained about people talking about a tech demo being shown to the public as an expression of AI's use being popularized and then proved it with his own words. I didn't say they were wrong, only it only gives credence to those who are worried about the popularization and use of AI in the industry to replace actual actors.

Rancegamerx45d ago

I can see what you mean. What I am getting at is just because they did a tech demo with Aloy using AI to voice doesn't meam that this particular tech will ever actually be used. Although I personally think it will, if we can get voices to sound more natural and real. Unless it's stopped by voice actors.

darthv7245d ago

that is the current situation. voice actors are 'voicing' their concern over the use of AI. im sure you have heard those TV commercials where you can tell its an AI voice. But as things improve... there will be a point where nobody will be able to tell the difference.

Mr_cheese46d ago

Thegamer are quickly highlighting themselves as a website full of over the top BS

gold_drake46d ago

there is this website from a bunch of devs who developed a more enhanced AI conversational voice thing, where u can talk to them.

i did for 10 minutes and it freaked me out how real it sounded. it did glitch a few times but damn. the, in real time, chatter and response was amazing and frightening at the same time ha

Kyizen45d ago

One of the original Toy Story developers summed it up nicely. Basically when they were doing Toy Story people were shocked you are going from hand drawn art to computers but now no one blinks an eye and most if not all anime is 'drawn' on computers. But he also stated this didn't replace artist but just gave them a new tool to use. Now with AI the author is saying it will replace writing but it won't, using it to have dynamic conversations with NPCs or chatter as the character explores the world will avoid that repetitive banter. You will still need writers to craft a good story and make a compelling character(s).

Horizon Forbidden West Struck the Perfect Balance of Tribes for Horizon 3

Horizon Forbidden West may have struck the right balance after adding several new tribes to the series, something which Horizon 3 should try to keep.

No horizon 3 i beg you Sony .. enough of this series already

pwnmaster300066d ago

It literally only had 2 main games and 2 dlc.
Sure it had some spin off but others have more
Halo
Gears
Elder scroll
Uncharted
God of war
Gta
Etc.
Game isnt done yet and just because your tired of it doesn’t mean everyone is.

ravens5266d ago

Exactly. (*All following #s are slightly exaggerated*) There's like 36 CODs. 16 Assassin's Creed. 25 Final Fantasies. 80 Maddens. I hate when we're on the 3rd iteration of a game and people say this.

isarai65d ago

We've had 2 main games, 2dlcs, a vr spinoff, a lego spinoff and soon to be GAAS spinoff

lukasmain66d ago

Why not? It's popular. They're great critically acclaimed games. It need a 3rd game.

northpaws66d ago

@Cacabunga

Only speak for yourself, I want to know how the story ends.

raWfodog65d ago

Same here. I'm enjoying the story. I want to see what happens when Nemesis arrives.

JEECE66d ago

It all depends on if it's actually a massive step forward or if it just feels like an iterative sequel. There's a lot of revisionist history now about how "mid" Horizon has always been, but people weren't saying that when Zero Dawn came out-people were pretty much universally into it. The major hit against it at the time was that it came out too close to Breath of the Wild.

The problem with Forbidden West is that it took five years and it was just an iterative sequel. Iterative sequels can be fine, or even great, but when five years pass and a new generation of consoles comes out, people expect a big jump, and they didn't get it. Stuff that worked in 2017 felt tired by 2022.

3 can't just be Forbidden West with slightly better graphics. It needs to actually be a meaningful leap.

ravens5266d ago

Im looking forward to the 3rd game. I'd like that to be the last one though. New IP after would be ideal.

jznrpg66d ago

Took me a little while to get into Forbidden West because I was playing on hard but it was really damn good once I got into a groove.

I want to see the ending of this trilogy so hopefully it’s not too far out. Hopefully whoever plays Sylens can do the character justice.

isarai65d ago

I dunno, i LOOOOVED Zero Dawn, but i wanted Forbidden West to be over by like the halfway point. It's an absolutely gorgeous game but damn was it buggy for a while after release, and the enemies and combat felt so janky and unbalanced compared to the first.
