PSSR AI upscaling looks set to compete with Nvidia’s DLSS - while AMD falls behind yet again

The brand new PSSR AI upscaling method built for the PS5 Pro appears to defeat AMD’s FSR 3.1, taking a leap closer to Nvidia’s DLSS - perhaps giving gamers another reason to purchase Sony’s enhanced console.

If PSSR ends up being a preview for FSR4, that makes me excited for when we'll get the generational-leap forward in AMD tech for handhelds.

just_looken241d ago

It is nice amd fsr works on all cards unlike xess/dlss but this only fsr is doomed is such crap like hello media every console this gen and next gen is using amd apu's they make money no matter what.

Jin_Sakai241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

FSR4 will likely be worse than PSSR and DLSS. AMD usually lags behind the competition.

DarXyde241d ago

Yeah, but PlayStation isn't exactly competition for AMD, is it? I would think they have a pretty symbiotic tech relationship. PSSR implementation on PS5 Pro is a good test run for how to improve FSR.

More importantly, it's all AI driven. Most likely, updates are possible.

@DarXyde

How can sony compete? they do not make the playstation 5 apu/igpu this is just software unless sony fans now think playstation owns amd and is making the ps5 chip set/apu.

Amd has 0 care about the market/competition they got all those mobile handled's using there tech and another 8 years for consoles.

All amd would do is like hey sony you can't use our chips anymore then its bye bye pssr but amd will never say no to millions of dollars.

just_looken,

I'm going to sound like a dick and I don't mean to be, but I genuinely find your posts a bit tricky to read because you don't use any punctuation. Spelling and correct grammar/syntax (generally) I don't care about, but I feel compelled to mention it because it is tedious and I want to read comments on articles I read. Contrary to the down votes you often get, I do like to hear from (almost) everyone, including you. As a courtesy to the reader, I'd appreciate that adjustment, mate.

Now then, onto the content of your response to me...

Just to be clear, I'm not saying Sony is competing with AMD. I'm just responding to Jin talking about FSR as being "in competition" with DLSS and PSSR—DLSS, yes, but PSSR is an innovation borne from Sony and AMD working on it together. I'm saying that AMD helps Sony quite a bit, but I think the collaboration leads to a great exchange of insights and I wouldn't call that competition. It really is collaboration more than anything.

Jin... I think AMD helped with the creation of PSSR. It is their chips used in the PS5, so it only makes sense.

FSR4 might be even better than PSSR since AMD wil have more die space to play with on Radeon gpu's. The PS5 Pro gpu is constrained by cooling in a tight space while pc gpu's are not.

derek240d ago

@just_looken, you are wrong. pssr is hardware based ai upscaling it is not software based, making it different from fsr and more like dlss.

I know little about this tech but how viable is it to implement this to the classic emulation? Like I wouldn’t expect a miracle but how much of an upgrade can Ai help a ps1/ps2 emulated game for an example?

PRIMORDUS241d ago

Nah, for high end gaming PC for take on the go Switch and maybe Switch 2 next year. This is all I need along with my Raspberry 4 for emulating thousands of roms of classic consoles. 😛

I appreciate this way of doing business. I may even buy Lies of P now because of it. Where your money goes it's literally the only leverage we have as consumers to make a difference in an industry we all have an opinion about. Withholding it or spending it in the right places is about all we can do.

This is fire. Just like the game. I haven't gotten the dlc yet, but im really thinking about it. I just thought it ended great, I really want to see what they do with Dorothy. Will you fight the Tinman, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, the Wicked Witch and Wizard of Oz? Maybe Toto's with us, that'd be fire.

Lol, maybe I'm becoming an old fart, but excessive violence in VR seems to bother me more than in flat games. Feels more visceral when you're looking a person in the eyes before mutilating them.

By no means am I trying to be a prude and saying these games shouldn't exist. I just play them more sparingly, need more breaks. I need some beautiful, refreshing & relaxing VR experiences too to balance them out so I don't feel so heavy.
