The Price of Playing PS5 Games Day One Is Getting Higher and Higher

There was condemnation of the industry’s decision to transition to $70 new releases at the start of the PS5 generation. For many, this price point breaks a psychological barrier, with software simply too expensive to be justified. Some have argued that cartridge-based software in the 90s was more costly, especially when adjusted for inflation; others have pointed out that budgets on AAA titles have exploded over the past decade. Either way, the prices aren’t coming down.

I am seeing more games doing early access for the more expensive editions. It’s the new day one. That’s on top of the $100CAD we’re already paying after tax. Something’s gotta give.

Eonjay222d ago

It just seems like a silly gimmik to me. I mean no harm I guess. This isn't really something new. Also, this isn't a PS5 thing. These programs exist on every single platform.

RhinoGamer88223d ago

With the quality of AA and AAA games at launch...pre-ordering is for suckers.

ZycoFox223d ago

Pretty much, the only games I had day one were ones I knew I was gonna love, like Half Life 2 in 2004 which I upgraded my PC especially for.

Not many "AAA" games I'd buy day one these days.. little if any actually.

gammaray13223d ago

hahaha, thats almost as dumb as a ign review

TallDarknWavy222d ago

I haven't bought a day 1 game since 2001 Metal Gear Solid 2.
Games go up in quality over time with patches, DLC etc, and prices go down. I would never buy something not on sale given games are now 100 bucks CAD.

just_looken223d ago

This here all of 2024 is full of games needing servers to play those servers are down or broken for those that got early access and or you got games like star wars outlaws were the save files were corrupted for all those that paid extra to play it early.

Michiel1989223d ago

Totalbiscuit was right and always has been, we do not preorder

Profchaos223d ago

Depends on the game I didn't hesitate to pre order Astro bot you could tell it was highly polished but for more recent games I've basically avoided everything outside of picking up some Nintendo games on day 1 after reviews

DarXyde222d ago

Not if it's an Atlus game.

I'd even give the nod to Capcom.

Kurt Russell222d ago

Pre-ordering I liken to gambling. I don't gamble.

I have no issues with companies getting money from certain gamers as long as it doesn't give them any competitive advantage. All this extra stuff keeps the base price down.

So if someone wants to pay $30 extra to play the game 3 days early. Go for it.

pwnmaster3000223d ago

Exactly it’s an option. You don’t have to pay for early access. You can just you know… wait for the actual release lol

Michiel1989221d ago

you're not paying for early access, you're paying not to get late access.

Hedstrom222d ago

So 3 days early is ok? How about a month? And maybe have tiers. For 100$ you get to play it 30 days early, 90$ 7 days early and 70$ on launch day.

Because thats the sentiment publisher will get if they get away with 3 days early.

Chocoburger223d ago

Its such a scum move to charge extra to play a game early. It doesn't affect me on a personal level, but these companies should WORK HARD for the money, and gamers shouldn't be supporting this B.S., bending over to these trash companies handing over their money for anything and everything.

You give an inch, they want to take a mile. If gamers had any brains left, they'd actually show that they have control over the situation, by not supporting awful business practices. Alas, its not meant to be!

ocelot07223d ago

EA and Ubisoft have been doing this sort of crap for a few years now.

Chocoburger222d ago

Yeah, and I don't support both of those trash companies.

pwnmaster3000223d ago

Wait why is it a scum move to pay more to play early.
You want them to charge the same to get early access. It defeats the purpose.
Might as well just release it early lol.

Profchaos223d ago

Quote from the article I've been saying this since starfield and it drives the point home perfectly

"Make no mistake, “early access” is not “early access” – it’s the game’s release date. If anything, the traditional $70 versions of titles are being delayed in order to upsell fans on expensive Ultimate Editions."

thorstein223d ago

Early access used to mean that you paid less for access to a work in progress.

Profchaos223d ago

I recall way back studios would hold public betas to test the game and supporting network infrastructure and took genuine feedback from it now pre order and get access to a beta is also not actually a beta they don't take any learnings from it you can't when your dropping a beta just before launch

If true, this is why Sony keeps making them. A lot of "gamers" might complain or cry about it. But as long as these things keep making money, they will keep doing it and ignore all those complaining online

neutralgamer19925h ago

You are absolutely correct end of fbe day money talks and so far their remastered/remakes have generated a lot of money

Lightning772h ago

So y'all are more worried about a companies pockets than your own entertainment? Are you pretending to like the same game being re-realeased each year?

CosmicTurtle1h ago

Nobody said anything like this above.

Lightning771h ago

@cosmic That's pretty much implied. Keep doing the same thing because it makes the company money forget my entertainment as long as they get richer. Instead of demanding more. If this was anyone else there would be backlash and it would be real that's a fact.

In a nutshell yes that is good the game is getting more attention more than ever thanks to the show I understand and acknowledge that. I'm saying all it promotes is more re-releases and remasters from games that don't need it.

franwex4h ago

Will HBO make a season 3 without Sony? They did with Game of Thrones after all.

Scissorman3h ago

This isn't an argument for the low-hanging fruit, but this here is exactly why Sony - and others - will keep producing them. Dev costs are low. Profitability is high. It's low risk, high reward. And given the skyrocketing costs in the AAA space, projects like this help fund future titles. I don't like it, and I'd much rather Sony - and others - release new titles, but I sure as hell understand why it happens.

PhillyDonJawn1h ago

Whats the point of making new games when you can keep releasing old ones 😂 they keep buying so why not?
