Baffles me the shit Sony get for pricing the Pro at 699 when this is 599 and it has the same power as the 2020 console.

got_dam218d ago

Just because ms is doing something shitty, doesn't mean Sony isn't.

andy85218d ago

Ill call Sony out when they do bad things but the parts in Sonys device add up to or very close to the 699 price tag. The Series X 2TB doesn't.

--Onilink--218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

@andy

They do not add up.

Just like he said, both are horribly priced.

This 2TB model should have come out with the same price as the launch model and the launch model maybe get a $50 price cut.

And the PS5 Pro should have been $600.

This whole inflation thing is bs. Both companies simply no longer wish to pass any kind of savings to the consumer. The regular PS5 was already being sold at a profit less than a year after launch and while maybe not every single thing as gotten as cheap as they used to get, there is no way they arent cheaper to manufacture now than when they were already selling for a profit.

andy85217d ago

@Onilink care to break it down why it doesnt add up? I will. Ballpark figures - the GPU is around 400, the SSD and CPU together are around 200. So that's 600 out of the 700 and then you still have the RAM, motherboard, power supply, materials and controller

fr0sty217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

Gotta love how everyone suddenly becomes an expert on wholesale hardware costs... Go price out every part in Pro, a PC equivalent, and you'll still go north of $800. Even with bulk discounts and the savings from certain things being made in-house, you're still going to be hard pressed to make the thing for less than $600, and the retailer still has to turn a profit.

Also, nobody is factoring in that the 2TB SSD in PS5 Pro is faster than what Gen4 is capable of producing, and you can still add more storage from there. This isn't just some bargain bin SSD you're getting with the Pro.

@andy85 said: "Baffles me the shit Sony get for pricing the Pro at 699 when this is 599 and it has the same power as the 2020 console."

That's because most of the online discourse was not made in good faith but was actually angry fans too deep in the format wars just wanting to score points. Even now you have Colt Eastwood (a prominent Xbox YouTuber with a parasocial 'friendship' with Xbox executives) going to the Twitter account of a Digital Foundry expert and criticising his praise of Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 Pro by claiming an older Xbox racing game was doing the same thing years ago! He's fighting a war for a company that just uses him.

https://x.com/Colteastwood/...

The PS5 Pro is not for everyone but it is for the hardcore fans who will get something new - increased gameplay performance.

The white Xbox Series X doesn't offer hardcore Xbox gamers any gameplay performance improvements, many likely already have external storage, so this model is not a 'necessary' upgrade.

If we remember Microsoft self-snitched by exposing secret internal documents about a white Xbox Series X upgrade - this is probably what that was but scaled back after MS's plans changed.

Onilink

They actually have videos of big time YouTubers who make pc centric content trying to build a $699 pc with similar features and they couldn’t. So atleast at $699 gamers get actual improvements while at $599 they don’t

This is coming from someone who has a PC and Xbox series x and doesn’t plan on buying a pro or even a regular PS5 (I don’t dislike any console it’s just that I much rather play on PC with mods) I hope that’s the next step for console gaming where they implement nexus mods

My whole thing is if someone will spend $699+ tax along with $79.99+ tax for disk drive and $30+ might as well build a $1000 PC

But to each their own

ABizzel1217d ago

And Sony isn’t.

Just because most console only players are ignorant of the cost of parts, because they’re been indoctrinated into the $299 / $399 price point for the last several generations (excluding PS3), doesn’t mean Sony was “doing something shitty” with the PS5 Pro price.

The PS5 Pro is using the equivalent of a $500 consumer grade GPU alone (RX 7800XT / RX 7800m), and you guys are thinking you’re going to get a 8-Core/16-thread CPU, Motherboard, PSU, 2TB NVMe, Case, Cooling, WiFi card, controller, etc… for $599……, all of those things for just $99 more….

The only thing I will say is that the base consoles should be $399 by now standard after 4 years on the market, but the PS5 Pro is priced at market value for consumers. What you guys are really saying is you wanted Sony to talk a loss on the PS5 Pro for your convenience, and business-wise it doesn’t make sense.

BehindTheRows217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

What’s “shitty” about the Pro? Break down the boat for us, since you, like Onilink below better than Sony how to prove their device.

-Foxtrot217d ago

He didn't say Sony wasn't doing something shitty, they are, his point was mentioning the night and day difference in both new consoles receptions with what they offer with their price point.

People forget how expensive a 2tb SSD is alone.

Who wouldn’t spend another $100 at that point to also boost performance?

Profchaos218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

Is it though you can find a gen 4 m2 2tb drive for my ps5 for 100 odd

if you remove the internal 1tb cost and replace it with the 2tb cost it's likely not costing Microsoft anything extra to manufacture today vs the console with 1tb in 2020.

Obviously these companies like to see a reduction in manufacturing costs as a generation goes on which traditionally results in lower cost units with more compact parts hitting the market. Everything they've done from the die shrink to cooling choices are purely for cost reduction same as Sony when the original came with a monster of a heat sink vs today's heat sink which is very different.

Point is they probably didn't see as much of a reduction with the 2tb as planned so they make the consumer wear it

jznrpg218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

I bought a faster 2TB NVME SSD (Samsung 990 Pro) than Xbox has for 139$. I am sure they get much better prices for their slower SSD

andy85218d ago

@profchaos exactly. I remember I got a 2TB SSD for my PS5 and it cost me £220. Now you can pick them up for £85. As you say that 2TB will cost them less than the original 1TB was in 2020. It's super cheap now not expensive.

Lightning77218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

What MS is doing is shitty though it's a limited console, not permanent.

Quick note Forza runs at 60fps with RT and GT runs that on the 5 Pro. So the power is there.

The tech in MS console is still fully capable. Despite HB2 we barely seen any game that takes advantage of the Series X. Games are still 30 fps on X oh but later on they'll be 60. Give me a break.

Hell we've barely seen any cutting edge first party from either console this gen.

Instead of finger pointing one platform, neither console provided that current gen full console experience. Yet these consoles are more expensive 4 years later.

MIDGETonSTILTS17217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

Forza has lower polygon cars. That is why the base XsX manages its performance.

Both franchises made technical choices, it’s apples and oranges.

Ultimately, GT7 in VR is THE only racing game I’ve enjoyed in the past 10 years, personally; and it’s solely because of the VR.

CosmicTurtle217d ago

Two different games by two different developers run at different frame rates? What does this mean regarding hardware?

Einhander1972217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

You may have forgotten but the RT in Forza is extremely limited and what people thought was RT was actually just reflections like the puddles in the rain. The only RT in races is very limited reflections on the sides of cars which need to be very close to the players car to engage and only a single car can reflect.

Saying a game has RT isn't a blanket statement, there are different types of RT as well as the number of rays themselves impact performance and the types of surfaces can be limited.

The RT that GT7 is doing is far more complicated.

And on the Pro GT7 can do 8k/60 and VR.

Gran Turismo 7 to Support “Experimental” 8K60 Mode on PlayStation 5 Pro
https://www.gtplanet.net/gt...

Claiming the SX and PS5Pro are anything near similar in performance is disingenuous.

IRetrouk217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

I'm not sure the forza comparison is any indication of what the consoles can do, the raytracing quality is different and actually really limited in forza, its why polyphony didn't do it in gt originally and kept it to replays, they did give us multiple 120 fps modes though something forza cant do on console, spiderman 2 has nothing but raytraced modes, why xbox fans always try to put playstation in the same position as xbox is mad to me, especially when one has been far better than the other at getting games out and pushing the tech of their consoles.

While we're at it, I shall bring Switch into the topic as well as it's also kept the same price for 7 years.
Does no one want to do permanent price cut anymore?
Man, I missed the days all of them still do console price cuts, felt like a lifetime ago.
Shits either keep the same price forever or go up exponentially.

kayoss217d ago

Totally agree. Nintendo games, after 7 years, its still at $50 +. But no one calls them out for it.

Lightning77217d ago

@Midget see its stuff like that most won't even notice unless DF does a zoom in on it. That sorta stuff is irrelevant to 95% of the ppl. What we need is great first party gaming in general instead. Instead these consoles are more expensive for what?

Naw this is easily the worse console gen.

KwietStorm_BLM217d ago

I said the same thing when I saw the price on this thing. I didn't know it increased. For what..

217d ago
PhillyDonJawn217d ago

I'll explain it. Sony didn't get didn't get heat cause it's overprice. They got heat cause it's not valuable. Ppl dont see the need for a $700 for a mid gen console this gen. The 2tb SX is a special edition. Much like the 30th anniversary ps5 pro, which got no flack cause it's a special limited edition. If you can't understand this than I can't help you.

The Microsoft store for Canada says $800 Canadian. Nah I think I'm good.

DivineHand125217d ago

I remember last year the Xbox was heavily discounted during Black Friday. I wonder if this will come down from its inflated price when the time comes otherwise it would be better to buy a used PS5 on eBay for $350, buy a 2 TB expansion for $100 on Amazon and pick up a few games during the Black Friday sale.

Bethesda is better than ever under Xbox.

Here´s hoping they will transition from Creation Engine to UE5 or UE6 for TES VI and Fallout 5 the same way they did with Oblivion Remastered

andy8518m ago

Better than ever? They've released an average game in Starfield and an absolute disaster in Redfall. Now don't get me wrong I love Oblivion but "under Xbox"? they've prettied up a game the actual talent created 20 years old and have since left. Stellar new experiences remain to be seen for that better than ever tag.

Also the Skyblivion team invited to Bethesda Studios, now that is a dev I can respect.
