Halo Studios: New Name, New Engine, New Games, New Philosophy

Xbox:

Ahead of the final match at today’s 2024 Halo World Championship, we saw an unexpected video. It depicted landscapes you might expect from the Halo series – Forerunner architecture jutting from dramatic landscapes inspired by the Pacific Northwest, gorgeous fields of ice, even a vista blighted and consumed by The Flood. We of course saw glimpses of the Master Chief, and his iconic enemies, even a Banshee arcing past the camera. But what we saw wasn’t a look back – this was something entirely new.

The best thing they can do in my opinion with the name and engine change is completely reboot it, start from scratch with a clean slate and get back to basics.

The unreal engine 5 reveal is surprising because there was a rumour a couple months back that talked about a Halo Combat Evolved remake using UE5, now was that a coincidence or is there more to it. If true I’m kind of hoping it’s more of a remake-reimagining where they get to tel a familiar story but in a new way,

“As gaming evolves, and players increasingly point out how long it takes to see new games from their favorite series, the team at Halo Studios felt the need to react“

Waiting wasn’t the issue, it was the quality of the game after waiting so long. If you start just pumping Halo game after Halo game out you run more of a risk at giving us lower quality content while also over-saturating the market with Halo stuff.

At the end of the day I feel like they haven’t really done anything jaw dropping with Halo to earn that “Halo Studios” name to be honest, guess time will tell.

Vits215d ago

I mean, not necessarily. When HALO was a Bungie-developed franchise, they released a new game every 2 to 3 years on average. By the end of their run with the franchise, it was one HALO game per year. If we include titles developed by outside studios, like HALO Wars, there were even less than a year between some games. With 343 Industries, they definitely expanded the time between main games, going nearly 5 years between releases. However, if we consider the side projects, it’s around the same 2 to 3 years.

My real issue with the HALO games under 343 Industries is the lack of direction. HALO 4 had a nice foundation, but then HALO 5 came along and said, 'Forget that, we’re doing this now.' HALO Infinite followed a similar path. It’s hard to care about this universe when it keeps changing direction like that. The same goes for multiplayer: HALO 4’s multiplayer was quite lacking, HALO 5 fixed most of those issues, but HALO Infinite reverted to HALO 4 levels before months of updates brought it back to the HALO 5 standard. Why is that? It feels like every time a new director or producer comes on board, they scrap everything that was done before and start over.

This is really not that different; the scale is larger, as even the engine is being scrapped. So I have mixed feelings about it. Sure, you free up a lot of manpower if you don't have to maintain and update your engine, but you also lose a lot of flexibility. Not to mention, your team will spend time adapting Unreal Engine 5 to replicate the behaviors the series is known for. The only real benefit with 'no strings attached' is asset availability, but even that has to be used with caution.

As for rebooting the series, honestly, given that TMCC is a decade old at this point, maybe it’s time to reboot the whole series. I hope that any new games include more experimental stuff. Halo Wars 2 is an extremely underrated RTS, and Spartan Assault was a great little game as well. So, what I’m trying to say is: where is my goddamn HALO Warthog Battle Racer?

VoiceMale214d ago (Edited 214d ago )

Good read, great points.
Just wanted to contrast a point u made about unreal engine
“Not to mention, your team will spend time adapting Unreal Engine 5 to replicate the behaviors the series is known for. “
This is quite the opposite. Unreal makes game development easier as it’s a market standard for many development teams. Halo teams hire multiple contract staff lasting like 18 months with extensions giving accordingly. This takes time for an in-house engine now dub slip space engine that was created by a team long gone (BUNGIE). So they understood the engine and can easily upgrade it as it was their baby. 343 industries were trying to modify it to alleviate development complications not only for themselves but contacted workers when they worked on slipspace , this slows down development hence why bungee was able to put out halo at a way higher pace than 343i

Now and What Halo Studios did when showing off their trailer was more of a marketing video. So all the talent that lost jobs over the past 2 years or so most of them will be able to come in as contract worked or staff and work with a familiar engine in Unreal and fit right in quickly and more efficiently.

Furthermore Rod Fergusson from Gears has been using Unreal since Cliffy B hand over his baby, so that team is veterans at that engine and can easily lend any assistance if needed as he is know to do.

"At the end of the day I feel like they haven’t really done anything jaw dropping with Halo to earn that “Halo Studios” name"

As your complaining-about-everything spree continues, what would a positive alternative?

-Foxtrot214d ago (Edited 214d ago )

Man shut the hell up man. All you do is comment on either mine or others comments and bitch about them constantly. If I look at my notifications page it’s your name in list format.

At least most of us are on topic talking about the articles, not whining and bitching about users because you don’t like what they write as you can’t handle other peoples opinions that don’t align with you. However what do you expect from something like you…Halo picture and all.

If you can’t stand other people’s comments and different opinions p*** you off that much just take a break from the site or something

Literally…talking about complaining yet here you are

Pot calling kettle huh.

IAMRealHooman214d ago

Then answer what have they done to earn the Halo studios title?
Halo collection broken for 500+ days
Halo 4 copying Cod
Halo 5 with a weak campaign, and a pay 2 win Mode
Halo infinite not having 4 player local, the worse progression system at launch, radio silence for updates for a year?
which was it ?

crazyCoconuts214d ago

When those dev insider leaks starting coming out about how they outsourced big swaths of the game to external contracting companies... That seems to indicate the management there didn't know what it took to make a good game. Name change is a good way to project a change, but they desperately need a change in leadership more than anything I think

spicelicka214d ago

Honestly, after that 6 year wait just to play an unfinished game and not much player content since, I would rather have lower quality content more often. I don't actually mean that of course, but I think the best position would be to separate multiplayer from the campaign and release campaign content/spin off games more frequently, while supporting the multiplayer experience for 3 years. OR release a good finished Halo experience every 3 years and have the frequent releases be DLCs and spin-off games. We have been begging for an ODST 2 for so long....

IAMRealHooman214d ago

They want a new start, leave the chief behind. Either jump ahead in time or go back. Some examples that could work:
Follow a young Johnson
The story of the first Spartans
First contact with covenant
Halo wars retold in FPS
Covenant civil war

It´s not "surprising" at all. Apparently everyone knew that the next Halo would be powered by UE5 but you.

"At the end of the day I feel like they haven’t really done anything jaw dropping with Halo to earn that “Halo Studios” name to be honest, guess time will tell."

Then you have nothing to expect from them or Halo in the future. Period!

IAMRealHooman214d ago

343/Halo studios do not know halo.
They've failed 4 times, at giving us a Halo package at "launch". They did fix MCC after they abandoned 5.
Halo's roots are couch co-op and "party" like MP vibes. If they can bring back the 4 buds hanging on a weekend on 1 console blitzing a campaign, fans will return.
If the dude who said halo's Mp roots are its competitive scene and esports is still incharge of mp their doomed

VenomUK214d ago

@RaidenBlack. It’s been an open secret for a while that 343i would be switching to UE5 - so much so I actually thought it had been made official.

343i becoming Halo Studios…Microsoft must feel strongly that it wants to distance itself from the Bonnie Ross mismanagement-era and now this is a new beginning. The explaining of the UE5 adoption meaning a quicker workflow and ability to attract staff gives me some hope. We will have to wait to see the first new game, however a Halo rerelease /remaster in 2025 would be most welcome.

RaidenBlack214d ago (Edited 214d ago )

I recall a DF discussion where they compared the original HaloInfinite/Splipspace reveal trailer with the launched campaign and in that they observed a lot of the advertised/planned features didn't end up in the main game, like varied biomes, animals, effects etc ... alot was cut and pared back ( and after reading recently about the mismanagement within 343 during development) and that Infinite was also required to run on 2013's XBOne .... I'd say they could've given Slipspace a proper 1 last chance.
A current gen only Infinite sequel with less crunch. Who knows, could've faired better?
The Infinite MP is live and ongoing anyway.
(UE5 can always be there to fall back on as a backup plan)

Microsoft has practically abandoned their own software which I personally feel is yet another terrible long term decision. Now they are fully reliant on Epic to provide them what they need to develop their games. And we are half way through this generation and they are just now rolling out the hardware implementation of Lumen, and have yet to complete and refine their texture and geometry engine.

And on top of this, the benefit of having in house software especially for a hardware manufacturer is that they can use software to implement their own custom hardware features.

For the future you have to image they are going to make very standard hardware, which is what they did this gen where the S/X are basically just stock AMD hardware crammed into a console form factor. Conversely, Sony has their own custom IO with Kraken and Oodle their own custom 3D audio with Tempest and now their own AI upscaling with PSSR, these are supported by their own custom in house software development tools.

And you look at this generation, Microsoft made the more expensive console with 54 CU the most expensive part on the console but all generation they have largely been outperformed by a cheaper to produce 36 CU PS5 due to the custom nature of the co-processors. Which again, texture decompression in direct store is done by the GPU meaning 10-15% of those CU are dead weight just doing decompression when compared to PS5 which just uses its own Kraken co-processor, and on the audio side any 3D audio or HRTF is done on the CPU where as on the PS5 those resources are free because Tempest co-processor does that.

VersusDMC215d ago

I wonder how they are paying Epic for the engine? I think it is a percentage on each sale...but if the game is on a subscription then how are they getting paid? Obviously Steam and PS5 versions is business as usual but wondering about the gamepass PC/Xbox version.

Enhinder,

Thanks for sharing...

What a silly and over exagerated take away from this announcement...all while slobbing Sony dry.

Oh man they have to depend on Epic...smh, you mean the most used, versatile, praised by almost every developer UE? You mean the one that Don't partnered with? You mean the one that showed PS5 Pro running in 60FPS and people in here were living it?

Just to be that guy, You say all this stuff about Sony, yet we get hardly any games for almost 2 years...all that razzle dazzle you just mentioned didn't help them one bit in bring many games for the last 1 yr 1/2, yeah yeah, Astrobot, was good lol

Turn it off for a day brother.

215d ago
Einhander1972214d ago

Sony released two MLB: The Show games, Spider-Man 2, Concord and Astro Bot and a remaster of TLOU 2.

What did Microsoft release outside of Zenimax and Activision... Hellblade 2 in 24 and Forza Motorsport in 23.

Heck even with Zenimax and Activision did they release 5 games and a remaster?

And Sony published Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Until Dawn Remake and Lego Horizon Adventures is coming out later this year.

Dogpool214d ago

All you got this year was Hellblade 2. Do want to get owned in a list war?

Tedakin215d ago (Edited 215d ago )

The entire Gears of War series and Sea of Thieves are made on Unreal. Hasn't been a problem for MS.

215d ago
Tacoboto214d ago

Can't forget HiFi Rush, Grounded, Hellblade, Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Perfect Dark, and pretty much every other non-Bethesda/Activision/ForzaT ech game they have announced...

I'm not sure what people are expecting Microsoft to do here. You can't attract talent being in last place requiring new developers to learn custom tech.

franwex214d ago

Isn’t the whole point of the Xbox consoles from the beginning to be standard though? “… S/X are basically just stock AMD hardware crammed into a console form factor.”
Yeah. Essentially PCs in console form. Microsoft has dropped the ball, but you’re criticizing exactly what is suppose to be a feature. Maybe not to you, but that’s the whole point of Xbox. To standardize and port games to PCs and consoles very efficiently.

crazyCoconuts214d ago

On the plus side of going with Unreal, they can perhaps focus more of their efforts on making a good game with a good story vs. the hard work of managing your own engine.

Einhander1972214d ago

Writers do not work on code for software.

214d ago
crazyCoconuts214d ago

@einhander, I don't mean to imply engine developers would be writing the story lol. Focus in terms of money, team makeup, and complexity. A lot can be gained by making the problem set smaller.

Einhander1972214d ago

The cost to license software is higher than the cost of using in house software.

The complaints I see about recent Halo games was simply the writing, that's not a particularly labor intensive part of game creation. As others have pointed out the primary gain from this is making it easier to outsource the development by using a more standardized software.

"Microsoft has practically abandoned their own software which I personally feel is yet another terrible long term decision."

No it´s not. You´re just jealous because most of XGS are becoming masters at Unreal Engine 5, which is simply the best and most technically advanced engine in the market.

214d ago
Knushwood Butt214d ago

I don't think anyone's jealous of vapourware.

Obscure_Observer213d ago

@Knushwood Butt

"I don't think anyone's jealous of vapourware."

So you´re telling me Sony invested BILLIONS in a company known for "vapourware"?

Einhander1972213d ago

Don't put words in my mouth.

I have told you before and I have said it since before I had any discussion with you on the topic.

So let me say it one last time and be perfectly clear.

I think UE5 is overhyped garbage, it has some good graphics but it's not doing anything that good custom development software used by other publishers can do and has already done. I would point out the fact that only recently has UE5 started to be able to do RT and other effects on hardware, it's one of the reason why UE5 games perform so badly and shows how far behind UE5 actually is. The whole UE5 talk has been built around a very manipulative marketing campaign that has idiots who don't know anything about development or other technologies like yourself who blindly say "it's the best".

Secondly I think Tim Sweeny is a manipulative backroom dealing double talking schyster who we have seen is very dishonest which was only illuminated during the ABK trial. I also don't agree with any of his lawsuits or their goals which completely seek to make the rich richer (himself) on the backs of the consumers under the false guise of taking it to Apple and Google while all he really wants is to bypass fees and use their services without paying which will force those companies to in turn raise the costs for their products to the consumer. I hope he loses every case he has filed.

If you want to think it's the best or whatever because your a Microsoft fanboy then so be it. But do not tell me or say what I think about anything.

And let me be clear about this, my feelings on UE5 has nothing at all to do with my preference for PlayStation.

I don't think it's so much Thanksgiving, but that Black Friday is the day after.

darthv721d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

That time is often referred to as the start of the Xmas shopping season. For the last few years, retailers would do 'black Friday' deals at various times throughout the year. While many still prefer to start their shopping in the mid to late November, others will just buy when they feel the time (and prices) are right for them.

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx1d 5h ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS1d 5h ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.
