Sony Brings Significant PSSR Upscaling Improvements In Performance & Quality Before PS5 Pro Release

Sony has brought substantial improvements to the PSSR AI upscaling technology featured in the PS5 Pro prior to its launch.

I agree, upscaling adds artifacts and latency. Seems like they are saving money on not needing more power, adding latency, and still neglecting the need for CPU and AI of in game characters. Also, what happened to physics?

Upscaling does not add latency, otherwise it would not be able to hit 60 frames per second.

@frosty: you confuse frame per second and input latency. PSSR, DLSS or any other create input latency, but it’s as good as neglectable tho.

@sagapo you are both correct and incorrect about latency due to upscaling, yes upscaling have a latency involved but it will also reduce the rendering load to deliver faster frames thus also decreasing latency.
a 60fps upscaled game will have more latency for 60fps non upscaled game.
But a main reason upscaling is used is to increase performance and used when games are not able to reach 60fps in native resolution,
so in most common scenario game will be between 30fps native that will have higher latency than 4K 60fps upscaled.

Yeah. I think it’s what most of us expected. DLSS is great, and FSR is kinda crap, makes sense it would fall somewhere in the middle for a first iteration of the tech. And I’m sure AMD will try to incorporate what they learned to improve FSR moving forward.

The point of the article is that the answer isn't simple. PSSR and DLSS are too close to see the difference in motion (to me DLSS appears to have a bit worse artifacting in Ratchet than PSSR has in TLoU2) while FSR is demonstrably behind, and on top of that, PSSR is still improving and not even in its release form yet. There just is no simple winner.

DLSS is better but it's not better by a large amount while PSSR is a lot better than FSR 3 is currently.

That is what the pro is doing.
Pssr is creating a better sharper image from a 1440p base.
Pushing performance and graphic fidelity at the same time.
Pssr is also its own chip set. Separate from the gpu… of which no one else is doing atm.

I get what you’re saying but I just wish they would optimize games to the base ps5 with this standard in mind across the board. I would rather just have a higher frame rate with 1440p. I don’t need the graphics maxed as far as possible

Get PS5 Pro for both, if you just want 60fps and doesn't care if the graphic is blurry then you can stay with PS5.

I am not saying PS5 is bad, but I never play in performance mode because of the lower resolution. It is blurry for most games, especially comparing to the fidelity mode.

I am just saying if that doesn't bother you, then you don't need PS5 Pro because you can just play in one of the two modes.

For me, I want both, so I will get a PS5 Pro.

Considering this is Sony's first attempt at having their own AI upscaling solution, while both AMD & Nvidia have had theirs for awhile now and for PSSR to compare quite well, that's pretty darn impressive.

Exactly.
People don't seem to understand these things are an iterative process. Do you want them to sit on advancing technology for 8 years and then just hope they get it all right when they finally have another stab? What they learn from ps5 pro with be applied to pay, and pssr will have had 3 or 4 years to improve. There's no such thing as just make it as good as the established leaders are now. You need to take that first step.

People don't like to give Sony credit for anything.

But the fact of the matter is they invented hardware upscaling with the PS4 Pro, they were two years ahead of DLSS and 4 years ahead of FSR.

There was an article about the design process of the PS5 Pro and part of it was about how PSSR improved during development, it's not unlikely that it will be updated on the PS5 Pro to work even better as time goes on.

Looks good, and far too clever for a simpleton like me to really understand how or why it works but I can appreciate it does. Will I pay for a new PS5 to see it? Hell no, I’ll wait for PS6 but I am a philistine who always chooses Quality mode over performance because (pitchforks at the ready) I really can’t feel a major impact in my setup and the types of games I play between 30 / 40 / 60 / 120 / 144 fps but I can feel the difference if things like reflections and shadows are reduced.

PS - before I get a ton of hate and downvotes, I’m not saying 60fps shouldn’t be an option, that it doesn’t matter or that it’s not important in many peoples setups, just that in my particular case and setup it’s of a lower priority than resolution, shadows and texture.

You and me both bro. I always play on graphics mode. If it's a locked 30 fps game then that's all I need. The problem is when it drops below that.

Personally, anything less than 60 feels a like a fast slide show now.

First game to really make that extreme distinction for me was The Last of Us Remastered. I had 60 on for a while and once I changed it to 30 to feel the difference, it was clear to me that we need options. I'm glad we've got that now.

But I guess it really depends on the type of games you play where that difference really matters. I would say any game that really makes use of timing (Souls games, fighters, FPS games, high speed action games) really benefit from the heightened frames.

Best example for me was Ni-Oh. I get wrecked at 30fps but I manage pretty well at 60.

I think sony knows what they're doing, each console end up with that extra push in power down the line that surprises us, even most games on ps4 still look good. It really shows that when devs actually utilize that power
