Before FFXIII was multi-platform, before Microsoft was on board does anyone else remember Square Enix saying that they were aiming for a worldwide release? That they wanted to focus on localisation early to completely remove or at least majorly shorten the gap between the Japanese and other versions of the game. This is due to them focusing more on the western markets.

And now that isn't happening. Either they weren't ever going to do that or there must be some other reason. Now, what could that be?

Square-Enix has been working on FFXIII for about 3-4 years now. Of course there's a waiting period between the regions, but considering that other RPG developers, ie. Sega with Valkyria Chronicles, it only took them a few months to translate the game and record english voice acting. Sega isn't even an RPG-focused company. S-E originally gave a release window of the PS3-only version "sometime mid to late 2009" but since the announcement of the 360 version, they announced "the PS3 version won't release in the west until the 360 version is ready for release in the west". That doesn't sound like translation time, that sounds like them purposely holding the game back, either from donations from Microsoft or because they want to maximize profits on both platforms. Although I'm assuming it'll sell better on PS3 simply because many people who bought or will buy a PS3, expect the game on a PS console. Having it on a different console just 'feels' wrong. I bought FF7, FF8, FF9, and FF Tactics on the original PlayStation. I bought FF10 and FF12 on the PS2. Final Fantasy on a different platform is just awkward for me. I'll be getting the PS3 version whenever they finally decide it's time to release the 360 version.

You're exactly right, I remember S-E stating that they wanted to shorten the gap between regional releases. Obviously, for some reason, most likely monetary, they don't care anymore about that. I still think with their recent love affair with Micro$oft, that has everything to do with it. S-E started out this gen supporting Sony, then seemingly they jumped ship, most likely jumping into dollar sign-shaped life rafts provided by a famous/anonymous multinational corporation that develops broken operating systems.

If you bother to check, the last 3 titles, all of which appeared on PS2 and other platforms all were on the same release schedule irrespective of platform, with Japan AlWAYS getting the first run, with Nt America next several months later, then Europe/PAL some months after that, without exception. Read into it what you will, but the facts show they have ALWAYS delivered in this fashion, and it's not a Port that is HOLDING it up, simply their normal way of getting their games out.

That's nice. But this has nothing to do with fanboyism. As I said before, I'm fine with a port. What I cannot stand is how SE is treating its fans, regardless of console. This game has been in development limbo forever, and the secret theatre crap is just that, crap.

Yes, FFXIII is "on schedule" since a release date was never given. So it wasn't "delayed." However, that schedule would probably be a few months sooner if they hadn't decided to start a porting procedure so late in the game. I guarantee you normal localization on a single platform is a lot quicker than porting the game as well as localizing, it's common sense, regardless of if you've worked in the industry. I was expecting a 6 month localization time, which is common for the past few FFs... now I don't expect this title until Xmas of 2010 in the US. Could I be wrong? Sure. But not from my own experiences.

But drop the fanboy crap. This has nothing to do with MS, and everything to do with Square Enix being hypocritical bullsh1tters. I for one hope I AM wrong, and they are able to fully port this title and keep its quality high in the exact time it takes to localize the title for the PS3. If they pull that off, I'll be impressed. But I almost guarantee this will be a Fall/Winter 2010 title.

It has been stated by plenty of Square-Enix employees (including Mr. Kitase) that the porting process as well as the localisation will occur simultaneously because they will have a separate team handling both procedures. Infact he has stated that there will be a significant decrease in localisation time (especially for us Europeans and Aussie's who typically have to wait a whole year). So I'm more than happy with that outcome.

Why should I feel shafted for them going multiplatform...People can say they will dumb it down for the 360 or whatever, but if they make a good game, thats all that shoould matter...FFXII was exclusive and that game sucked..Personally, I got the ps3 for this game and versus...so as long its a good game, I'd be ok and the fact that SE is going multiplatform should have nothing to do with anything.....

The script and scenario will be one of the first things finished (according to the director himself!)which allows this. They can full well make a global launch and are capable of it. Kaim, I hope that is true. All I'm saying is, in my personal experience, porting isn't all that easy or quick. If FFXIII is indeed such a large title as to warrant YEARS of development, I have to wonder what happens if, as I'm proposing, the porting runs longer than the localization. I mean, if they expect a QUICKER turn around time for localization, but also want to port it... I don't see those two time tables aligning, even with separate teams. If they can port it to the 360 in 2 - 4 months with equal fidelity, hell, I'll be impressed.

Yes I admit, right now it's conjecture, and my disdain is focused squarely on SE's practices and hypocrisy lately, that's all.

@ Jackdoe: As you said in your comment below, why would they want to anyway. With massive releases coming out in Japan in 09' (DQ9 and FFXIII) it would be foolhardy to leave no significant releases for the 2010 fiscal year. With there current plans in mind (FFXIII Japanese Holiday release) the usual practice of localisation/translations can occur and by the time that process is finished, FFXIII will release in NA/EU as bolster 2010 financials, I'm sure keeping the shareholders happy.

@Unicron: I remain optimistic because Mr. Kitase has ensured a speedier localisation and the fact that 'Crystal Tools' will mean a relatively easy porting process, certainly within the bounds of a 6-8month release window when handled by a separate team.

Hell, if they released the PS3 version globally simultaneously, then the 360 version would still come out in 2010 which still gives them earnings! Localization CAN be done concurrently with the development of the game since all the story elements are one of the first things finished and finalized.

@ Jack: I understand what you are saying but no where have Square ever said they would release FFXIII worldwide. So we can't really make assumptions and say they would have if it wasn't coming to the 360 as well.

Also it is still procedure to finish the game before translation occurs, not whilst production is still going on. Plus then the localisation to many European nations, who not only speak different languages but also have an entirely different gaming standard (PAL) than Japan and NA.

A worldwide release would mean that Japanese gamers get the delay, of course Square Enix wouldn't want that.

I disagree Kaim. Look at Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean IV, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, and MGS4. Localization in all these cases was done as the game was being developed. So it is not quite standard procedure any more for the big guns. Only times that localization hasn't occurred with production are cases where the developers aren't quite sure if the game will even come stateside. FFXIII is not one of those games. Also, Square has implied that they would release FFXIII simultaneously worldwide in the past, though that kind of talk ended post E3-2008.

Also, Kaim, I'd like to say that Square said no earlier than April 2010. Which means that a later release date, could and may happen. Which means that we could get this game over a year after it hits in Japan. Which means it is time for me to brush up on my Japanese and import the game.

Ran out of bubbles, so I'll say this Kaim. Supply is a non issue and it has been a non issue for a long time. Hell, Halo 3 sold like gangbusters, but I could easily find a copy of Halo 3 the first week (which I bought). Also, Level 5 has no U.S. branch while Square does.

@ Jack: I would be very interested in reading about the worldwide release speculation before E3, cause in all seriousness I had never heard that. Though that process can occur, (localisation) it seems it is up to the dev, in which way they want to handle that beast. Given the fact that Japanese gamers are now expecting an 09' release, any type of delay (on there end) is out of the question, so out goes the worldwide release possibility.

You can also look at say Level 5 with White Knight Chronicles, we don't even have speculation of an overseas release. Add that to the fact that the Final Fantasy series is one of the highest selling franchises, it makes it that much more difficult to adequately supply all retailers in every region for a worldwide release (likely another factor that has always resulted in 6-8 month delays across regions for FF games).

There is a major problem with this line of thinking. You cannot go by the past. In the past, NO Square game released simultaneously. In the past, Square didn't give a rat's ass about the West. In the past, Square wasn't so strapped for cash that a delayed release would mess up their earnings. However, this is not the same Square of the past. This Square releases games simultaneously worldwide: Last Remnant, Star Ocean IV, and Infinite Undiscovery. If Square can release all three games globally, within a few months of each other, then it should be no problem for Square to release FFXIII simultaneously globally. However, there is the problem that Square made a deal with MS to release the 360 and PS3 versions of FFXIII simultaneously in the west and still won't start the 360 port until the PS3 version is completely finished. Hasn't Square heard of outsourcing? Nevertheless, the 360 port isn't the only cause, but it is one of the causes and to deny that is foolish. Another cause is most likely the fact that Square has no other hits for 2010 and thus needs the earnings from a 2010 release of FFXIII to make 2010 earnings look better than they would.

I will say it right now. If Square had not announced mid-production that they were working on a 360 version when they were working on a PS3 version, this game would have most likely come out in late 2009. They don't know how many disks it will take on the 360 version or whether they will have to take out things to make both versions the same.

I still want to get the game but I question Square's decisions.

Been playing Jrpgs all this gen..(some were good, bad mediocre or just plain stink).

It took 8 months too 1 year for the US and EU to get Final Fantasy 12(least of my favorites in the series).

Seems like Square keeps that tradition with it's best selling series. It easy to make assumptions but that's how it's always been. I expect no different.

Plus how many games you think, Square is or have been working on? They released 2 big games for the PSP which revived sales of that platform and the DS is getting plenty love and you have 3-4 titles for next gen boxes.

I know it's a desperate waiting situation with the PS3 and JRPGs. So I understand besides the multi-plat rants.

Also, I would like to add one final thing. Square has fvcked up royally this generation. From releasing piss poor games that should have been left in the oven for a little longer, to completely ignoring a fanbase that would actually buy copies of their games, they have done everything wrong. They are like the complete opposite of Capcom actually. Where Capcom has actually progressed as a company and is probably one of the few relevant Japanese development houses remaining, Square has become a shell of its former self. Capcom sees earnings increase year by year while Square flounders in hell with its FF games on the PSP keeping it afloat. Hell, there's even a rumor that Nomura himself is fed up with it (what would happen if their rockstar left? No more FFVII spin offs that no one wants?) I have been a Square fan for a long time, but they are trying my patience. They treat the West like garbage, and I am fed up with it. Where other companies give full disclosure, Square has "secret theaters" and exclude the majority of their fanbase. Square fvcking charges for trailers for fvcks sakes!

When the game is finally created on the Ps3 platform it will be all Japanese text and language.

Which means after this process if they don't want there RPG to look tacky they have to sync lips according to the english version also convert all text to english, re create there entire CGI cutscenes so it can lip sync with the english voiceover.... whatever puzzles, mini games ALL HAVE to be transferred to english...

Ps3 to 360 port can be done while what's named above is being completed....for what is named above CANNOT be completed until the actual game is completed.

In some magical world were you fanboys think that voice overs and transitioning a game from one language to another takes short time...

Why don't you look at the GTA IV release in Japan....

A game BUILT for the english language developed by a more then wealthy developer that had years of time...had a 6month spread between NA, EU release and the Japan Release..

6months to get professional voice acting to overall make the quality better for us english layers I have NO problem with that.

I believe the port to 360 will be done before all voice overs and transitioning will be completed and thoroughly checked.

I mean seriously....What takes longer? Porting a code or reading millions of words looking for a typo lmao.

Final Fantasy VII was released in '97 in the US and Japan
(but development started in '94 so 3 years difference from SNES to PSOne)
Final Fantasy VIII was released in '99 in the US and Japan
Final Fantasy IX was released in 2000 in the US and Japan
bring on the PS2:
Final Fantasy X was released in 2001 in the US and Japan (yes ONE year later!)
Final Fantasy XI was released in '02 is Japan and '04 in the US
BUT!
Final Fantasy X-2 was released in '03 in Japan and the US
and finally:
Final Fantasy XII was released in 2006 in Japan and the US.
See where I'm getting at?
Square announced Final Fantasy XIII in 2006. The game is slated for a 2009-2010 release window. That's 4-5 years... :(

*Funny footnote about that. I remember the special edition DVD that came with Final Fantasy XII - they have the E3 '06 FF XIII trailer, and the guy says "Coming exclusively to the PS3", LOL.

I understand that the 360 is really easy to develop for, but COME ON! This is Square-Enix we're talking about. These guys - as much of a jerk I think Wada is and how much the company has been slacking as of late - are some of the best in the business. I mean, c'mon, from Final Fantasy to the SaGa series and after Sakaguchi left they still pumped out Kingdom Hearts (well he left after the first one) and The Wolrd Ends With You.

We are the people who are buying the games. Games like Tekken 6,Final Fantasy XIII and so on was suppose to be out. How many more Screen Shots, Teaser Trailer and new characters will show up on the internet. Tell me how Soul Calibur came out last year and tekken 6 still showing teaser trailers. what i don't understand is the reason why SE is releasing rpg's on the 360 exclusively. clearly, the 360 fanbase cannot play jrpgs without taking their ADHD meds first. compare wkc's japanese sales and all the 360-exclusive SE rpgs UI & LR sales worldwide. see my point?
