PS5 Pro Game Boost Reconfirmed By Sony Exec

PSU writes: "PS5 Pro Game Boost is able to vastly improved the performance of more than 8,500 backwards compatible PS4 games, but it’s also able to apply some of its magic to PS5 titles. Specifically, Aoki-san revealed that even if a title is not PS5 Pro Enhanced, then Game Boost can improve things providing the game has unlocked frame rate and resolution."

DivineHand125213d ago

The base PS5 can already boost those same PS4 titles that have an unlocked framerate and resolution. This is a misleading feature since they are not doing anything other than having the extra power of the PS5 Pro take advantage of those situations.

Unless they make it so devs don't have to update their game to support unlocked framerates and resolution, this should be ignored and treated simply as a marketing term.

mkis007213d ago

ps5 doesn't lock every game in boost mode at it's max resolution and/framerate so you are incorrect. Many games use dynamic resolution even if they do not have unlocked framerates. PS5 pro will do it better than PS5.

fr0sty213d ago

As for why it can't do it with locked frame rates... if a developer knows that their game is locked to run at a set frame rate, then certain calculations in the game that rely on precise timing will be made with that frame rate in mind, knowing that every frame will be redrawn every 32 milliseconds. If you just tell PS5 Pro to ignore that frame rate lock, it could then break those timing mechanisms which then breaks the game, so it isn't as easy as just flipping a switch and then the games all magically run at the faster frame rate.

DivineHand125213d ago

This is what I said.

"The base PS5 can already boost those same PS4 titles that have an unlocked framerate and resolution."

Idk what you read, but I was very specific about PS4 games, not every game. The whole point of my comment was that Sony is advertising this as a feature when it is simply the console leveraging its extra power to improve performance on games with unlocked framerates rather than it being a feature the console was specifically designed to do like PSSR.

fr0sty213d ago

Except the extra power the console possesses is something it was designed to have, and therefore is a feature of the console that its predecessor does not have. You have a strange way of defining features.

LucasRuinedChildhood213d ago (Edited 213d ago )

It's just the same as PS4 Pro where you can enable Boost Mode in the settings.

Bathyj213d ago

He's saying it can boost ps5 games that are unlocked. Not just PS4

DivineHand125213d ago

I am not sure you understand what game boost is. The best implementation of the feature was on the Xbox series consoles where some games that ran at 30 fps could be played at 60 fps and some games that were 60 fps could be played at 120 fps.

An example of where this was implemented for comparison sake was both Battlefield 5 and Mirror's Edge Catalyst ran at 120 fps on Xbox series while those games remained at 60 fps on PS5. Microsoft has worked with those developers to get those enhancements while I don't see where Sony has pledged to make the same commitment. This leads me to believe they are simply leveraging the extra power of the PS5 pro to improve titles with unlocked framerates and resolutions.

Bathyj212d ago

I'm not sure you understand the point even though you're saying it yourself. These benefits or what Sony is calling gameboost comes without the developer doing anything at all yes it is simply from the extra power. And it only works if frame rate or resolutions are unlocked. this is not about making a patch to get extra benefits which means extra work by the developer though this could also be done if desired. This is simply automatic and that's the point.

Baza212d ago

Divine clearly doesn’t understand game boost lol

outsider1624212d ago

Well it did mentioned it can boost ps5 games. Not just ps4 titles

Sarcasm212d ago

This is a misleading comment, and willful ignorance. This should be ignored and treated simply as a fanboy post.

DivineHand125212d ago

Enlighten me of what is misleading? The PS5 Pro will improve the titles with uncapped framerates and resolutions. It will do this as a given because of the extra power available similar to how the base PS5 boost performance of PS4 games that target 60 fps but don't actually reach 60 fps.

You and many others here will not understand the point I am trying to make because you only know of playstation. Multi console owners will get it because they have seen what boost mode is on other platforms and calling this implementation a boost mode is disingenuous.

On the Xbox series consoles, there were a handful of titles that were locked to 30 and 60 fps that received a boost mode which caused the frame rate to exceed those caps. That is a true boost mode. If Sony had advertised the PS5 pro with that implementation, then the demand for the console would have been much greater than it is now. I imagine it is very expensive and time consuming but we the gamers would have appreciated those enhancements.

Eonjay212d ago

I'm not sure we have the full details on the PS4 games. it sounds like PS4 games are getting boosted in some other way, perhaps using PSSR in a different mode. Dynamic res and framerate applies to PS5 titles because the PS4 titles will automatically be maxed out even on OG PS5.

So it seems like there are like two are three different kinds of Boost modes. The autoboost that come by virtue of more powerful hardware that applies to all software. A boost to PS5 games that use dynamic/unlocked modes, and a mode that uprez PS4 games and some PS5 games.

Then of course you will have Pro Enhanced PS5 games.

TheEroica212d ago

How dare you question what Sony execs say about their product! Believe them blindly like a good sheep!

Pedrof212d ago (Edited 212d ago )

Word. Are there many PS4 games that can't mantain their target framerate when played on PS5 ? Don't think so. I can't see how PS5 Pro will be of any benefit for PS4 games, over base PS5 I mean.

Look at all these PS Pro enhanced games which I cannot play since it has no disc drive

MrNinosan212d ago

I own most of the games digitally, but even if I didn't, I'd just buy the $80 disc drive.
You trolls are really brain dead, aren't you?

When you buy a new phone, you take for granted headphones, chargers, case, glass protection etc is included, right?

SimpleSlave212d ago

Your comment shows your lack of foresight and complete disregard for the obvious. It also shows why the industry is more than OK with the decisions they make that ultimately affect us, the gamers. And yes, this includes you.

The Disc Drive have not, is not, and should not be considered an Add-On. Because you know what happens to Add-Ons? They get left behind and forgotten. They become obsolete, not just physically but in the mind of the buyers. Plus, you know, your line of thinking contradicts the history of Consoles having a Disc Drive included as part of the console.

And I'll tell you were your type of mentality will lead us. When you buy a new phone, you take for granted the screen? How about the plugs outlets? Batteries? If you allow these companies to do this, then when will it end? When will everything stop becoming just an Add-On and en extra for them to charge us for? They'll push as hard and as far as they can in order to make a profit. And if they can't now, they'll certainly try the next time or find an alternate route to their ultimate goal.

This is Sony testing the waters. They already started with the PS5 Slim needing the Disc Drive, the one that comes with it no less, to be Activated by an One Time Online check. Now their Pro console is doing away with the Drive altogether. Next Gen, Disc Drive will be optional for all SKUs, just an extra for more $$$ of course. And the generation after that? Well, once they train gamers into not expecting the Disc Drive, just as they trained Gamers into expecting Micro Transactions, the chances are high that the PS7 forward, the Disc Drive won't even be an Add-On. I mean, maybe as a Third Party Add-On for those Odd Indie games that gets a very Limited Physical run games. But we'll see and I doubt it. But the training has already begun. Reading your comment should be prove of it. Something that's been the norm now is being compared to headphones, chargers, case, and glass protection. Need I say more?

So in 15 to 20 years the Disc Drive will probably be completely done away with, and the Console market space will be just like the PC market, mostly all Digital. And unless something drastic happens on a legal sense, you will literally own nothing. Certainly none of the games you buy.

Bookmark this comment and get back to it in 15 to 20 years. Bet.

Cockney212d ago

If people are willing to pay £700 an extra £80 on top won't bother them

OldDuffer211d ago (Edited 211d ago )

You can add one on? Far better to have the choice to add it on than the rest if us who have zero use for it have to buy one and waste an entire drive that will sit and do nothing for ever more. My og ps5 was a disc one, and has only ever seen one disc, a4k bluray I inserted just to ensure it was working.
Dont force the rest of us to buy your old resource wasting tech simply cause you wish to hang on to an outmoded and ecologically damaging method of consuming games. You are catered for.

Its hysterical to see fools bleat on about 'owning nothing', they have clearly never read their terms of service which confirms even with a physical disc you have a license only, same as any digital purchase. What you own is a disc with code that is outdated even before the games released. It amazes me how many people choose to die on this hill without even understanding what they are arguing for.

if i remember correctly black myth quality mode runs at uncapped framerate...so hopefully it reaches 60fps.

Bathyj212d ago

That games begging for a pro.

Eonjay212d ago (Edited 212d ago )

I don't think that s right. BMW actually uses frame rate caps that don't make any sense. The Pro may help out if it uses any kind of dynamic res but there are some things with the game on PS5 that are fundamentally broken from a dev perspective that they have to address. Perhaps the performance mode will be 'fixed' (latency should fall off a cliff) due to the Pro brute forcing it. No amount of power is going to automatically fix some of this. But I think we don't have to worry. Surely being as successful as it is they will surely patch it.

Einhander1972212d ago (Edited 212d ago )

Even if it uses frame rate caps, it doesn't hold to 60. So, on Pro, regardless of caps or not it will run at higher more stable frame rates.

Eonjay212d ago

@Einhander1972

Thats the issue though. According to DF the Balanced mode runs at 45FPS locked. This makes no sense. Simply removing the cap will fix it. But the dev has to patch it. Same with quality mode. Its like set to 35 FPS locked or something weird like that. Simply setting the cap to 30 would fix it. They just did some weird stuff. For Performance mode they use FG but they probably don't need this anymore or could set the performance cap to 120 to make this better. I think they should just patch out FG in Pro mode because it will fix the latency.

Einhander1972212d ago

Why are you talking about balanced mode? The game has a 60 fps target performance mode.

"Performance mode targets 60fps, as you’d expect, and often hovers just below that target in general gameplay."

In performance mode PS5 Pro should hold 60 nearly always.

Smellsforfree212d ago

I'm really hoping Elden Ring performs perfectly on the PS5 Pro. I'm fine staying in performance mode, I just hate that the DLC content runs between 40-55fps most the time.

46player212d ago

Excited to set it up and see this new console in action!
