PS5 Pro Equivalent PC Would Cost Way More Than $700, Says Tech Expert

A tech expert has finally settled the PS5 Pro vs PC cost debate, stressing that a PC equivalent to the console would cost way more.

Daniel Owen on YT already did a comprehensive video on beating the Pro for below 1,000 USD and it doesn't even use top of the line parts...

Where do people get this nonsense from that you need to spend like 4x+ more to match console? This is even less true now given the price of the Pro.

What do you expect when using the same outdated CPU? Prices come down, PC gets cheaper, it's not hard to keep fairly up to date hardware every 2-3 years, hardly an expensive hobby when you compare to some others and given everything you could do with it.

ocelot07241d ago

Oh lord I had to search this up once I read this. The first thing he does is add a Ryzen 3600 CPU to the list. A 5 year old CPU that's on AM4 platform that is at end of life. This is why I can't stand these YouTubers there recommending dead end platforms. Absolutely silly in my view imagine is someone who didn't know about PC's seen this and trusted him.

Gets to storage admits ps5 has a really fast 2TB. Knows it's won't fit his narrative so opts for a slower drive. This is embarrassing lol. So far I'll give him credit. At least he explains in detail why he is choosing these parts. So far I'm not impressed with his parts.

Now he has chosen a rtx 4070. I agree with this. Yes it's better than the Pro GPU and costs more. But he can't be selecting the Ryzen 6800 as you are then comparing apples to oranges here. FSR is not AI technology unlike PSSR or DLSS.

Now he has gotten to well you know subscription costs and disc drive. Where is the disc drive in his pc build? Where is that 4k Blu-ray drive. What if I don't play online. There is a lot of them people on playstation. Out of the 100+ million PS4 owners and 60+ ps5 users. Sony has about 50million active subscribers. If we have to include all these stuff where was his $100 windows key?

So let's get this straight. He went with a 5 year old CPU on a end of life platform. He went with slower SSD. A better GPU and in the end it cost more. He excluded the price of a Official windows key.

Plus he failed explain that. If that PC ain't playing games at 4k all the time. If he lowers the resolution to say 1440p you will then be running into bottlenecks because of that CPU.

Rude-ro241d ago

I remember when the ps3 launched and they were doing the “you can build a pc cheaper”…
And they literally bolted the cheap parts to a piece of wood.
You can not make this stuff up. 😂😂

Absolutely serious…
To anyone wanting to game on pc, do so…
But do not build a $700 pc to do so.
You will regret throwing the money away immediately nor will you surpass the ps5 let alone the ps5 pro or the ease of use.

Gpu $800+
CPU $180(for last gen) will need upgraded.
Motherboard $120 (to support the last gen cpu) will need upgraded.
Ram $80-120 (32gb is becoming the standard on pc)
Power supply $80 (I would go with 800w to future proof)
Case $80-+(good ventilation. As pcs evolve, heat is becoming an issue)
CPU cooler $60-120
Windows key $100
M&k or controller
A monitor that supports what your build is going for.
The above is a 1440p build with solid frames. 160-200+ depending on the game with max settings.

This, at the cheapest cost, will be $1,420.00 not including the cost of a monitor and m&k or controller.

This would be a solid build with great/dependable parts.
This is also a build.

Buying a prebuilt is still shady af to do.
I highly do not recommend it..
Especially if the price is too good to be true.

ZycoFox241d ago

He literally tells you that it's not a high end CPU, did you even listen to what he was saying? Seems like no to me, you probably watched like 2 minutes and then turned it off and formed an opinion from that, dear lord.
It's a cost effective build. Of course it's not future proof, neither is a console. It wouldn't add much more to import a Zen 4 7700 chip from something like Aliexpress, then obviously need compatible board/ram.

ocelot07241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

@Number1TailzFan

Well considering the video is 24 minutes long and that I pretty much made points of every component he used and the fact it took him longer than 2 minutes to actually get around to choose the damn CPU I think that tells you I watched and listened.

He did indeed mention that this cpu is not his first choice. What is annoying me is he clearly loves his tech. His clearly loves pc systems. Why on earth would he recommended someone to build a $900+ pc using new parts but on a end of life platform and a 5 year old CPU. That's crazy that irresponsible.

"It's a cost effective build" The video title is PS5 Pro Killer Gaming PC Build. It's clear he is trying to put a system together to beat a PS5 Pro and cutting corners as much as possible without thinking long term.

Just why spend $900+ on a end of life platform it's absolutely stupid. I can understand second hand by all means. $30 motherboard, $40 3600, $25 16GB RAM is great value. But to recommend people spend $900+ on a end of life platform is crazy.

He spends $90 on the CPU $70 on a motherboard and $29.

He could of spent $125 on a OEM 7500f + $100 for a asrock b650 and $47 for 16GB DDR5 RAM and $5 for a basic amd cooler as the 7500f won't come with one. A difference of just $88 lmfao. A measly $88 gives you a much faster CPU faster ram and about 5 ymore years of CPU upgrade potential. But no, He really wanted to keep it close to that $700 PS5 Pro price. Just so he can become part of that crowed how has been rattled since the pro was announced.

Absolute joke, If your spending $900+ on a pc wtf is a extra $88 for a new platform and a faster cpu and ram.

ZycoFox241d ago

@ocelot07 Well I can't disagree there. He really should've included an AM5 build in there either before mentioning the AM4 setup or after, seeing as it doesn't add all that much cost considering how much you'd be spending anyway, it makes sense.

Mind you, we don't even know if AM5 will support Zen 6 on the current boards, I would hope so though given Zen 5 was pretty much a flop.

Windows keys can also be had much cheaper than 100 via key sites, depends how comfortable a person is with that I guess.

Charlieboy333241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

@ Tailz "Of course it's not future proof, neither is a console"....that is where you are completely wrong. With a console you ARE future proofed for the entire 8 year generation. In fact the games IMPROVE on console as time goes on with best looking titles coming out towards the end of the gen.

You cannot say that about ANY PC.....games will not be looking and running better on your PC in 8 years without upgrades. So this whole PC / PS5 equivalency is for morons. The builds these idiots are coming up with won't be worthwhile in 8 months time, let alone years. Yes you can upgrade, but then you will have ended up having to spend more.

At that point you will anyway no longer have the equivalent console specs anymore either since sonething in your system would have improved.....so what the hell is even the point of this retarded comparison to begin with?

DivineHand125241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

While there are issues with the PC and PS5 Pro comparison this early in, I also think you may be putting too much faith in PSSR. It is too soon to declare it better than FSR 3.5. It is Sony's first attempt at adding AI image upscaling and to even compete with what is on Nvidia's offering, it would mean that Sony's engineers put out something that would defeat Intel's own R&D department and what took Nvidia 3 GPU generations to develop in the 19 months it took them to make the PS5 Pro. Unless Sony declares that all games will benefit from PSSR by default without any updates from developers, it could just be something we see in a few games, much like the checkerboard rendering we saw on the PS4 Pro.

ZycoFox241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

@Charlieboy

Spoken like a true clueless person.

Not gonna waste my time so I'm gonna make it short, the comparison was made with a 3600 CPU because it's a cheap equivalent to the PS5 CPU in speed, so once again (for the 3rd time) I have to say, it's not what he recommends.

You can build better as I already said which is far more up to date and better than PS5 Pro, and still not much more.

You can say console will run a game better than equivalent PC in 8 years or whatever, at that point who the hell cares, the next console would be out and it would probably look and run like ass at that time on the previous machine & equivalent PC either way. And then PC would be far ahead again within the first few years of the console already being on the market.

Though I will say it can be game dependent, some can still look good and run well. Not always the case.

fr0sty240d ago

DF showcased that PSSR does indeed surpass FSR, by a long shot. It's not quite DLSS, but it's close.

VariantAEC239d ago

Rude-ro
Buying prebuilt from MSI directly... still shady? Of course not! But it will basically cost the same and that is the real point. A decent 1440p60 and up build that is at least better than the base PS5 will cost $1,200 USD and up.

I did see a preconfigured PC for $850 at Walmart.com, but that was barely edging out the base model PS5 on paper with the RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, and Core i5 12400F, but I didn't look at who made it - it could be a 3rd party build sold on their website, which can be sketchy, unlike buying from the manufacturer directly which is not sketchy.

VariantAEC239d ago

@Ocelot
No new PC kills console for less should be made using used parts.
If the console is new the PC should be all new, too. End of discussion.

But the points keep on coming because that PC with used parts still costs more than the new console... whoops!

"Daniel Owen on YT"

That was like watching my first PC build, a cheap PC with no forward compatibility and bottlenecks. I hope no one decides to listen to Owen they as they will be very disappointed.

WhyDoIFly241d ago

Disappointed but still better than the Pro? K. LOL

NGL this is a strange comment to make.

ZycoFox241d ago

Well it looks like you didn't listen either, because he literally says it's not what he would necessarily recommend.

MrDead240d ago

@why
No not better, the system he suggested is bottleneck city, you follow his advice you're literally throwing away money on a system that's out of date and can't utilise the power it's got.

@Tailz
Then what's the point of your post, the guys suggested just burning money on a system that can't do what he stated.

VariantAEC239d ago

@Number1TailzFan
1. The build the idiotic YTuber created isn't even what he would recommend.

2. His un-recommended PC build is $200 USD more expensive than the PS5 Pro.

3. His un-recommended PC build is focused only on GPU power to beat PS5 Pro, but will not be as fast as PS5 Pro because of the slower in-practice CPU.

“hardly an expensive hobby when you compare to some others”

But console gaming is an even less expensive hobby compared to PC gaming, and always will be.

UltimateOwnage240d ago

You’re not going to beat this console for under $700 with a PC. No way, no how. You might approach it at $1000 buying some low tier parts and a used 7800 XT which retail for about $500 alone. Good luck getting a compact case, 2TB M.2 SSD, motherboard, RAM, PSU and a Dual Sense for anywhere near $699. I know, I just bought a 7800 XT and built a mini PC.

TheNamelessOne242d ago

Guess it depends who you ask, being the opposite has already been confirmed.

ChasterMies241d ago

All we’ve seen are parts lists that don’t include all the parts, like the $70 controller that comes with PS5. And to get around the OS costs, they either load Linux which won’t work with all games or Windows 11 without an activation key. No one has built not offered for sale a $700 PC that has all the function and performance shown for the PS5 Pro.

Crows90241d ago

Right because with PC gaming...you make an initial investment that pays off in the long run. Console investments don't pay of in the long run because all those components can't be reused.

I also love how people bring in the monitor for the full price but never the TV for console gaming. Not to mention the ongoing online cost for consoles that doesn't exist on PC. And the whole thing with a new generation requiring minimal additional investment for 3x the performance.

Einhander1972241d ago

Crows90

But the console is sold at a subsidized price.

And all I keep hearing about is how CPU's aren't usable across generations and how using a similar CPU will somehow provide less FPS, so clearly the two most expensive parts need to be purchased every PC upgrade. And PS5 Pro has faster Memory and a larger SSD so you gotta buy those too and not cheap stuff either like the slowest possible ram the motherboard can accept like the recent "PC comparison builds"..

The fact is that the PS5 Pro is still much cheaper than buying or even upgrading to a similar PC.

GOULDYBOBS241d ago

How much is ps plus a year?

241d ago
Petebloodyonion241d ago

Do we need a daily article discussing a $700 PC versus a PS5 Pro? Why would a PlayStation user interested in purchasing a PS5 Pro be interested in a gaming PC? According to N4G, they already have one for playing Xbox games.

ocelot07241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

I'm all for PC gaming I love it. But you won't be seeing me like I can build a gaming pc that will match or beat the Series X for $600. It just can't be done.

I can go sure get a old server with with a 8th gen intel. Some second hand ram and a second hand RTX 3050 or RTX 2060. Then sure you can play Xbox games at 1080p 60. But you won't be matching the series x for fidelity and resolution for that price.

pwnmaster3000241d ago

This is not for them obviously.
Is for people who doesn’t and want to upgrade.
You have to think for a little bit.

fr0sty240d ago

Because there's a lot of PCMR's feeling very threatened by what Pro is offering, and a lot of former X fans that have decided to cling to PC now that their console of choice is circling the drain who are feeling the need to trash what is now the most powerful console ever released.

Why The Rumored $1 Billion Budget For Grand Theft Auto VI Does Not Add Up

Here's why the rumored $1 billion budget for Rockstar Games' upcoming open world action game, Grand Theft Auto VI, doesn't quite add up.

"Or was it i̶n̶f̶o̶r̶m̶e̶d̶ guesswork from analysts?"

Video game budgets will always be fictional, just like Hollywood movies. Unless there are receipts it's all speculation.

And Take Two has a marketing department with an already approved budget (just like studios in Hollywood).

thorstein12h ago

(Continue...I was in the Lincoln Tunnel)
Budgeting isn't included in the total cost because it is a separate budget. These companies intentionally inflate the numbers so they pay less in taxes.

This is not a new trend. And if you give your CEO $30 million per year and a game takes 5 years, you just add that $150million to the budget (CNN).

isarai8h ago

I don't know where they get these numbers, absolutely NO games is spending anywhere near that amount on production even including marketing. If we're talking lifetime estimates for like a 10yr plan maybe, but even that would be a very vague projection. RDR2 at the time of release cost less that GTAV did and GTAV cost about 265mil with marketing being an average of about 200-300mil each.

Lightning778h ago

I believe it's somewhere around there. Cod is 700m$ to make. I think GTA could be around there if not more. The insane level of detail in the trailer says it all.

Yeah I believe it's around there personally.

goken1h ago

The $700m cod budget is for tax purposes imho.
I also seriously doubt a game even as top notch as GTA would cost a billion to make.

QuantumMechanic37m ago

Yeah, that would be tax fraud. Public companies are independenly audited. They cannot just put whatever number they want "for tax purposes".

This game just didn't excite me like the last 2. I'm passing on it this time.

JEECE2h ago

Spin off vibe without the spin off price.

LucasRuinedChildhood4h ago

Could be affected by:
- A percentage of people will play this on GamePass which the last 2 games did not launch on.
- A percentage of players bought the Deluxe Edition which included early access, reducing the peak as players will start playing it on different days.

PRIMORDUS3h ago

Price most likely the issue, and while most don't know or care about Denuvo on PC, if you lower the price I'm sure it will sell more on all platforms.

VersusDMC1h ago

Well Clair obscure had the same situation(gamepass) and had a concurrent high of 150k and currently at 50k.
