PS5 Pro performance estimate makes it look like an "underclocked 7800 XT"

The PS5 Pro is said to have a GPU that is less powerful than the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics card, here's what we know so far.

ocelot07223d ago

Oh cool so the pro now has a $500 graphics card makes the 700 a bargain price lol. The 2tb SSD alone is like $150.

There you go with that logic again 😊

purple101223d ago

it literally is like this, if its a 7700 thats £350, so its a bad deal, its its a 7800xt thats £500, makes it a good deal;

common sense tells me its in-between and sony making profit on this, which is not the normal model for consoles where they loose/break even and make money on games.

OldDuffer222d ago (Edited 222d ago )

Mid gen consoles are not sold at cost/ under price. When you establish a format, you are prepared to take a hit in order to get a user base and build brand loyalty. When you are already outselling the competition and introducing a luxury version of the platform, there is no point in taking a loss per unit.
This is perfectly normal for a mid gen refresh.

RaiderNation223d ago

And that performance is without PSSR implementation.

fr0sty223d ago (Edited 223d ago )

Actually, you can't buy a SSD that can hit 9.8GBPS at 2TB for under $250. That's Gen5 speed (the lower end of it, but it's above what Gen4 can do).

Also, this GPU has RDNA4 ray tracing tech in it, so it's above a 7780XT in that regard.

CrimsonIdol223d ago (Edited 223d ago )

People seem to be placing an awful lot of hope/cope on the shoulders of PSSR. Particularly since PS5 already has FSR2+ games. lots of them(most games for the last couple years I'd guess). If you don't like the soft blurry upscaled images from games using FSR2+ or UE5s own temporal upscaler you're going to be similarly disappointed by PSSR. There's not a massive difference between DLSS and FSR2+ as it stands. Most people are guessing it'll stand somewhere between those two (because DLSS is the industry leader and if it's not better than FSR then what's even the point?). DLSS is great, but if you're rendering at 800p or whatever you're going to have a soft image still, just like you do with FSR. just with a few less artifacts.

Babadook7222d ago (Edited 222d ago )

“If you don't like the soft blurry upscaled images from games using FSR2+ or UE5s own temporal upscaler you're going to be similarly disappointed by PSSR.”

Nope. Closer to the newest DLSS

“800p or whatever you're going to have a soft image still, just like you do with FSR. just with a few less artifacts.”

Um. The resolution has nothing to do with how poor PSSR is. If anything it’s a sign it works great so the consoles beefy GPU is used for improving environment settings rather than wasting it on rendering a native image.

CrimsonIdol222d ago (Edited 222d ago )

"Nope. Closer to the newest DLSS"
That's what I said. in literally the following sentences. I'll uncut off your quote:
"If you don't like the soft blurry upscaled images from games using FSR2+ or UE5s own temporal upscaler you're going to be similarly disappointed by PSSR. There's not a massive difference between DLSS and FSR2+ as it stands. Most people are guessing it'll stand somewhere between those two "
being closer to the newest DLSS is between FSR and DLSS. you are agreeing with me.

"Um. The resolution has nothing to do with how poor PSSR is."
Um. It absolutely effects how good quality it is. perhaps I should have been more clear that I'm talking about the internal resolution before PSSR does its thing. The quality settings on DLSS, FSR, XESS, FSR are literally tied internal resolution. the more pixels, the better quality.

"If anything it’s a sign it works great so the consoles beefy GPU is used for improving environment settings rather than wasting it on rendering a native image."
This is already happening on all unreal engine games and any of the other games utilising the various temporal super sampling options on offer. PSSR is just another one.

Sorry dude but you've clearly got no idea what you're talking about.

fr0sty222d ago

You should watch DF's video on this topic, PSSR blows FSR out of the water. Still not yet as good as DLSS, but that will come with future updates.

CrimsonIdol222d ago (Edited 222d ago )

I've seen it. And I'm telling you as someone who has access to both, DLSS does not blow FSR2/3 out of the water. It's better. it's marginally better. DLSS used to blow FSR out of the water until version 2. The gap is not much though. There is a significant difference between the DF comparisons, but those differences could be replicated by having one game running FSR with an output resolution of 1440p compared to the same game running FSR with an output resolution of 4K. FSR would blow FSR out of the water in that case. In fact we don't even know if these games are all using PSSR, could easily be FSR just with a bump to internal and output res.

Vits222d ago

With Sony fanboys, you can't really be logical; they don't care. They attach their opinions to buzzwords and will roll with it for all eternity. Some are still defending that BS SSD super speed that Sony touted when the PS5 was launched, even when it has been proven time and time again that it is not particularly special or needed, despite what the buzzword might lead them to believe.

The same will be true with the PSSR; they will sing its praises, and some are already claiming it's a completely new technology that isn't available anywhere else, as if DLSS isn't quite literally half a decade old. Even after it's proven that it's not a magical solution, they will still believe it is.

CrimsonIdol222d ago

Well yeah that SSD is just Gen4 speeds anyway, not even full gen4 speeds, around 5500MB/s I believe. but it's got some neat on the fly compression that gives you the *potential* for higher throughput, which gives fr0sty something to talk about I guess and confuse with real hardware throughput.

Whoever does estimates on a product that has yet to be released to the mass market is a fool, more so as it has some technologies that are nowhere to be found on anything that already released. So it would make more sense for EVERYBODY to hold their horses and wait. The guys at Digital Foundry are throwing so much shit at the PS5 Pro even though it is putting bread on their table since the moment it was announced. Ridiculous ....

I think 90% of us already knew this only delusional people think it's on par with 7800xt

The gpu on the ps5 pro is stronger then the 7700xt and weaker against the 7800xt it's inbetween them both and despite the ageing cpu the ps5 pro should still be capable of run games at 60fps

fr0sty222d ago

7800XT has weaker ray tracing performance than Pro due to Pro using RDNA4 tech for it's ray tracing. It also lacks PSSR, FSR is inferior to it. So, while it isn't clocked as high as a 7800, it does have some advantages over it.

Oblivion Remaster is already the third biggest release on PS5 this year! Only behind (so far) of Monster Hunter: Wild and Assassins Creed Shadows!

So is Sega these days.

Funny really you make a good game and make it available for sale and people buy it. What a world we live in

northpaws2h ago

Still this argument? Lol.

The truth is the Xbox division cannot even survive without PS now, not the other way around.

Kornholic34m ago

Since the majority of Xbox players absolutely REFUSE to buy and pay for games, it wouldn't be even possible to make these types of big budget games without releasing them on PS5.

It's a shame that Xbox players don't respect games and game culture enough to support them.

Now that Xbox fanboys have accepted that xbox games will be released on PS5 (and Switch 2), Microsoft will be able to release them on Day one from now on. Just had to get people to swallow the pill.

dveio1h ago

I really gotta say I am a bit curious about E-Day.

With hardly any sales anymore, wether hardware nor software, probably not even subscriptions in a quantity they would want to have:

Is Spencer going to pull the trigger and bring Gears D1 on Playstation?

goken1h ago

It’s what a good game from a good franchise deserves.
I still think it would have done better if it came out on PS5 day one.

dveio1h ago

That's my guess, too.

In hindsight, it's really been a bold decision to not release it on Playstation in a month like December.

But instead back in August already to announce it's going to come to Playstation, then proceed to make it a weird "4 ½ months timed exclusive", and then to release it in a time with so much competition/big games being around.

Isn't this just weird?

I mean why would you do that, purely from a business point of view speaking.
