PS5 Pro GPU vs RTX 3080 - can Sony's upgrade fight Nvidia's powerful graphics card?

With a new upgrade to the console, we check out how the PS5 Pro graphics card compares to Nvidia's RTX 3080 discrete card.

Saying no doesn't change reality. It's a very powerful GPU in that little $700 box... and the part they're leaving out in the article is that it has ray tracing tech not even found in the 7800XT, RDNA4 equivalent tech, in addition to the PSSR which is supposed to be superior to anything the 7800XT can do. Couple that with the 2TB SSD that has faster then PCI-E 4.0 speeds, hardware decompression that doesn't take any GPU power to do (unlike PCs) and dedicated 3D audio hardware not found in PCs, and it's a beefy little system.

Your gonna get dislikes, but I agree it's a stonking box for 700. One wire in, one wire out and no configuration just turn on and play. That's everything why it's better than a pc already and we don't have to talk about the specs lol

It’s supposed to have 1.2gb of extra ram available to developers to.

PC gamers always feel threatened when a console catches up even slightly. The reality is some of the most graphically impressive games have been console exclusives on hardware much weaker than what is available at the time on PC.

First party studios work magic with fixed hardware rather than brute forcing power on PC with a billions different hardware combos.

all the more reason to stick to the base ps5... let them get all they can out of that and save the new tech for PS6.

Like you say, its not the hardware, its the talent that program for it. Ive seen amazing things done on lesser capable systems because the creativity of the developers figured out ways around limitations.

If you enjoy what you get out of your base ps5, awesome! but those of us looking to buy a PS5 still (like me, who is gifting my OG PS5 to my nephews this christmas), and have the extra $200 to spare, PS5 Pro works great. It's higher priced than I would have preferred, I really was hoping they'd stick to what PS4 Pro did and launch at the same price the OG PS4 dropped at, but none the less, it's still a solid system. Spec-wise, you cannot build an equally powerful PC for that price. Plus, I get to enjoy my favorite PS games on it now, not 2 years later.

You can brag about your consoles graphics all you want but at the end of the day more people care about performance and pc is king in that regard. Current consoles don’t even have 60fps as the standard yet and it’s almost 2025.

No. The numbers they tested were from Doom Eternal. which came out at the roughly the same time as the 3080 way back in 2020. The 3080 was marginally better, but again. 4 year old card vs brand new $700 console. I get why console only players think they are getting a great deal. This would be true if this console was the OG ps5 at launch for $500.

We don't know the extent and capabilities of the system yet there's a lot of unknowns in pssr and system efficiency that is not present on a PC however that doesn't change it's value proposition which is not really working in its favour

It's always so funny when they do a "comparative" pc build to what is in the console. As if you will be as happy running a game on a toaster pc vs a purpose built console. This gpu cost more than the pro.
