Yeah, at $700 the PS5 Pro is expensive for a console, but I spent more than double that on GPU alone

"Just get a gaming PC instead" isn't good advice for everyone.

darthv72226d ago

There have always been two markets. the enthusiast and the hobbyist. The enthusiast market is where price is no object while the hobbyist is where people who are frugal will find their own point of entry. Console gaming has always spent its entirety in the hobbyist market. it was always a lower cost point of entry with a level of simplicity that appealed to the masses. Those who want to be bold and try their hand at the enthusiast market are certainly free to do so.

When you start pushing the hobbyist into the enthusiast 'pricing' territory is where you see push back. And because value is subjective.... some see the Pro as worth it, while other may not. Especially when you look at how Sony was showcasing things in the reveal. If you have to zoom in 200% to spot any sort of difference... that really isn't selling people on the idea of a Pro. Hence why many are saying it's not worth it. It could be worth it, but we will have to wait for NEW games to showcase it like they did with GoW 2018 on the 4 Pro when it was revealed.

My last GPU purchase was $1,500, and I damn sure didn't buy it for gaming. I bought it for work. In fact, I've never run a single game on it. It's my little ray tracing monster. $700 is about the most I could ever see myself spending on gaming, regardless of the platform.

GhostScholar225d ago

You spent 1500 for Ray tracing? I’m sorry man

Cacabunga225d ago (Edited 225d ago )

Ok but the biggest problem for me is there are absolutely no games that justify considering to invest in it.. the vast majority are cross gen.

“Ray tracing monster”

😅 🤦🏻 🤦🏻

TripleAAARating225d ago (Edited 225d ago )

I'll just reiterate what I said in a previous article:
Why is everyone acting and talking as if the OG PS5 will somehow cease to exist on Nov 7th???.... wtf man I really don't get it, just don't buy the Pro, it'll send them a message....it's not like Sony's gonna stop manufacturing the PS5 slim, the Pro's an option not a necessity, I'll still be playing GTA6 and all other first party releases in 2025.... and to eveyone saying just build a PC, LOL.. why not just buy a PS5 slim?????.GTA 6 won't be on PC next year...

The MSRP of the Pro was, I'm pretty sure partly influenced by MS's $600 option with no hardware upgrades other than 1tb of extra storage this Holiday, when you look at it $100 more and you get a much more Powerful and advanced console when considering the tech packed in Sony's machine (minus the optical drive of course).. I'm sure this was part their value proposition when considering the consumer would make a comparison..

@darthv72
If you're talking about the hobbyist market Why would MS not just give their lineup a price cut?? considering thier poor sales, even at a loss for every console, they would have sure seen a surge for the holidays, and at the very least make Sony consider the same.... No they doubled down and even increased the MSRP on their lineup, further solidifying Sony's grip on the market, hence $700 for the Pro.

darthv72225d ago

@AAA... both MS and Sony have raised their prices this gen. That is something i havent seen in my lifetime of gaming. usually by the mid point there are revisions and lowered prices. It is a worldwide situation where the economy in various regions has been tanking instead of improving.

I think it combines both hobbyist and enthusiast and it's the later the ps5 pro is aimed at. Can't belive it launches in a couple of months

ChasterMies225d ago

There are also markets based on price sensitivity (like, people are poor) and access (kids, people who travel). For many people, no matter their enthusiasm for gaming, a PC is a non-starter. And there are gaming enthusiasts who want to spend as much free time gaming as possible, as as little free time downloading drivers as possible.

Extermin8or3_225d ago

Except Sony aren't pushing hobbyists into anything. The pro is for the enthusiast market. The base ps5 is still there and functions just fine.

Ooh fancypants rich McGee over here

Bathyj225d ago (Edited 225d ago )

I could buy 2 Ps5 pros for the price of my phone.

Have some perspective people.
People pay more than that for vacumn cleaners.
I don't know what that's about .

Tbh
People have no issue spending $1000 on a phone that they will replace in 2-3 years but won't spend half of that on a console they'll keep longer.
I find it funny that the PS5 Pro presentation happened 24 hours after the iPhone 16 presentation. No on complained at the iPhone prices. But that's also because iPhone are EXPECTED to be expensive while consoles are supposed to be great value.

NotoriousWhiz225d ago

You can't really compare spending 0-30$ per month for a 2-3 year contract vs spending 700$ up front with one payment.

NotoriousWhiz225d ago

Now if Sony had a contract where you got the PS5 pro for 15$ per month as long as you subscribed to PSN Plus for 3 years at the monthly sub rate.

That would be more comparable.

Cacabunga225d ago

Because iphone is overpriced thanks to a herd of fanboy sheeps does not make it a standard to measure after..

The phone vs console purpose is also totally different.

bradfh225d ago

A PC allows you to upgrade components like the GPU whenever you need to, whereas with a console, you’re stuck with its fixed specs. If the price is similar, why not invest in a PC? It can offer more flexibility and longevity compared to a console, which often requires replacement every few years.

Markdn225d ago

Hmm so it's the total spend on a pc over it's lifetime we should be comparing? Not a great plus point for a pc. People need to stop comparing pc prices and console pricing. Ps5 pro is the top dog in console gaming so I'll buy it. Rtx4090 is top dog in pc gaming, you can buy that, it's so stupid to even bring up the comparison

GhostScholar225d ago

You’re out of your mind. This is gonna be a huge fail for Sony. Greed finally drove them off the cliff.

Markdn225d ago

And gpu manufactures are the greediest people on the planet and they still do very well. People way pay whatever it's cost to get what they want, if you don't want it fine, I get that. But people will buy this for sure

HectixTulip224d ago

Listen here chief. Pc requires no subscription to play online or even keep your cloud saves. Epic store gives away 2 free games each week and you don't require any subscription to access them.

Multiple stores to buy games digitally, even grey market sites. I bought dragon dogma 2 for 47 bucks at launch.

Better game sale events and sometimes new games priced at 60 bucks instead of 70.

All xbox and ps exclusives are on pc, you can even play switch exclusives via emulation.

Pc has modular design so you can just change the part that is causing bottleneck while ps5 pro with gimped cpu is gonna be giving you smooth 30 fps in cpu intensive games.

In essence you save in the long run, and you should consider all these things before you start yapping.

Markdn224d ago

Oh gosh your so right let me load up gt7 on pc........ Oh hanging erm
. And as soon as you started talking prices it all ended up as money. Can't afford to game pick another hobby. PlayStation has sales everymonth and at great prices for big releases, epic games give away games because why else would you use such a terrible service. Take your Pc trumpet somewhere else

"It can offer more flexibility and longevity compared to a console, which often requires replacement every few years."

What are you even talking about?.. last I checked a console's life-cycle lasts about 8 years or more, I bought my OG PS4 in 2013, it still runs and is supported to this day.

New Rising Media/ 'Spent' Shows How Life Changes When Your Unemployed

NRM writes "How would your life change if you were suddenly made unemployed? It's a question that very few of us would like to ponder, but one we should all be familiar with. Could you stretch the latest welfare payment/minimum wage pay cheque across household bills, rent, proper health insurance, and adequate care for your children?..." [ctd.]

Bitmob: Spent: Can you survive a month on $1,000?

Your savings are gone. You've lost your house. You're down to your last $1,000. Can you make it through the month? A video-game collaboration between McKinney and the Urban Ministries of Durham wants you to experience that eye-opening scenario.

RayRay365170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

Not with reefer prices the way they are. Fuck that

Yi-Long5170d ago

... survived the first month with 251 bucks left, but some of the examples are a bit ridiculous.

500 dollar a month car loan? My whole car was bought for 2500 euro. 300 dollar gasbill? Never gonna happen, not even here in Holland where our gas costs way more than it doesn in the USA. 100 dollar phonebill!? Nope. Never.

I originally come from a poor household myself though, so I'm already pretty damn skimpy and never borrow money. I sure hope never to get back to that situation, and hope those who are in that situation, get all the help they can get.

evrfighter5170d ago

Screw bills if you got nothing left. Ur credits gone. Cheetos and a 32oz drink for lunch. Top ramen and some koolaid for dinner for 30 days. After the months up you got 950 bucks to yourself.

seinfan5170d ago

I like how when the car got repossessed, I automatically was unable to attend work. It's as if I didn't know anybody with a car or the bus system doesn't exist.

jeeves865169d ago

@ seinfan

If you live in a rural area, the bus system doesn't exist, and not everyone will give you a ride for free.

Kalowest5170d ago

I know i can survive a month with only $1000, i dont do shit.

Gungnir5170d ago

Interesting social experiment. Maybe turning it into a video game will bring more realization to the fact that millions of people have to make decisions like this on a daily basis.

mushroomwig5170d ago

'Maybe turning it into a video game will bring more realization to the fact that millions of people have to make decisions like this on a daily basis. '

Why would people need to play a game to realize that? That's called life, you need a job in order to pay bills. That's pretty basic information to learn, something you learn in school, no?

gamingdroid5170d ago

Some people don't learn until they hit rock bottom, others never learn. They have to be taught!

Sad fact of life....

choadley5170d ago

Looks like a game where the people who need to play it will not be among those who will play it.

Kalowest5170d ago

I just played the game, my ass is not living like that.

JeffGrubb5170d ago

I'm worth way more than $1,000 a month.
