"whole gaming community is furious over the price reveal,"

Source: "The gaming community can be found complaining on almost every social media platform" and a poll with 887 votes.

No wonder there are layoffs. There are only 887 people in the "whole gaming community."

There’s only 2 options buy it or don’t.
Vote with your wallet now.
Option 1 it’s a success and open the door for the next system at the same price.
Option 2 it’s a failure and they re think the next system price to about $100 up from current generation. Personally I’m not getting it.

You're assuming they've got some unnaturally big profit margin on this, with no evidence of how much this costed them to make.
If they're just trying to maintain normal profit margins, then failure on the Pro just means they won't offer more niche higher performance consoles anymore, and stick to what the masses can afford.
Something tells me they'll do fine though

Eonjay270d ago

I really don't get it. You either want it and can afford it or want it and can't afford it. This is just a fact of life. It doesn't matter if you want a Benz but can only afford a Toyota? Imagine how crazy it would be if folks who can only afford a 4060 demand the 4090 be offered at the same price. No one is saying that it isn't worth the price because clearly, when we look at the PC market, it is. So what exactly are people complaining about?

You will never get a poll of all gamers but you can take a statistically robust sample, and get a good idea of how the gaming community feels. IGN did a poll and got over 14k responses…they were overwhelmingly negative.

Nobody wanted the Pro except diehards

crazyCoconuts270d ago

So they found 14% of respondents are going to buy it. There are like 50M PS5s out there. If 14% decided to upgrade that would be 7M.
PS4 Pro only moved around 6M units per year the first few years.
I guess my point is that 14% for a high end "Pro" product may be fine/expected.

OlderGamer17270d ago

And tech junkies, look its simple if you want it then buy it. No one holds,a gun to your your head and demands you to buy it., when, you have a PS5 like i do you dont need it. Same story with the PS4pro, i did not buy it, same for the PS5. The courtage does not affects me and all the other PS5 owners.
All does people in outrage are whinners...

helicoptergirl270d ago

They were saying that about the Portal too, and look how good that sold

Markdn270d ago

And that's exactly who it's for so all good right

This console is meant for the people who never bought one in the first place that were looking for a reason to. If you already have a ps5. This upgrade isnt absolutely necessary, but the pro has significant upgrades that support the selling price. Inflation is very real, not just for consumers like us but also for companies like this.

TheEroica270d ago

Sweet deflection shield you got their... Once you've been milked, and validate these prices for Sony we'll know who to thank when ps6 hits a cool grand at launch.

mkis007269d ago

How high do you think the profit margins are on nividia gpu's? Bet you it's much higher than any console that isn't nintendo.

thorstein269d ago

A) I'm clearly poking fun at the journo
B) I already own a PS5.
C) r/whoooosh

DarXyde270d ago

Yeah, the whole 'furious' thing is bizarre.

I think people are going to be a little vocal and just ignore it. It's a mid generation upgrade. Being 'furious' for the PS5 Pro price is silly in and of itself. Now, if this carries implications for the price of the PS6? That warrants fury.

I'm curious to see how it'll sell. Early sales probably won't be too bad, since there are always gonna be people who are willing to pay a much higher premium to get the best available SKU, but once those people have filtered out, I don't see them moving a lot of units at those prices, especially in Europe. I'm expecting sales to collapse soon after launch.

If that turns out to be true, Sony might just keep the production rate low and accept to sell a fraction of the units compared to the PS4 Pro sales. What's more likely in my opinion is that the pressure to reduce cost of production will lead Sony to launch a 1TB variant within the first year of the initial launch.

Europe however will need a pretty significant price drop on top of any cost reduction, because the delta between the base and Pro prices is significantly higher here than it is in the US for some reason. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 700€ disc drive bundle and a 650€ digital version by summer of next year.

crazyCoconuts270d ago

That bigger price difference is an interesting mystery. I would think something will happen over time to align that more logically. Perhaps a price increase on base PS5 unfortunately.
If you figure it out please post...

I_am_Batman270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

Yeah, we'll see how it shakes out. It's not the first time they've made strange pricing decisions either. When the slimmer model launched last year, the price for the digital one had a 1:1 ratio between USD and Euro ($450€), while the physical bundle had a significant difference ($500/550€). So the difference between the digital and physical bundle is 50$ in the US and 100€ in Europe.

That's part of the reason why the current situation is so bad. Not only does the digital Pro console cost 800€, the optical drive is also 120€ as opposed to $80 so the differences just keep piling on.

Edit: By the way we've had higher prices for PC hardware announcements before, but usually real prices level out at an approximate 1:1 ratio after a while. So maybe the same will happen here.

crazyCoconuts270d ago

Doesn't the VAT vary by county? If the VAT needs to be embedded/hidden in the price of the advertised product, wouldn't Sony have to publish the worst case price if trying to generalize across the entire EU? Trying to make sense of it...

crazyCoconuts270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

Holy crap those VATs are in the 25% range for most countries. On a purchase of 700 that's 175. That's wild that a) it's so high and b) the EU gets away with trying to hide them from consumers. Man I hope that never happens in the US, but I wouldn't be surprised at this point

Knightofelemia270d ago

It will sell collectors will snag it up. And people will buy it people are interested in the newest and latest technology, Look at all those people who line up to buy an iphone that looks the same as last years model. People have to have that latest and newest piece of technology.

OtterX270d ago

Yea, €799 here, which is roughly $880 at the moment. I'm fine sticking with the OG PS5, then upgrade my PC to an RTX 4000 line within the next year.

gold_drake270d ago

yup, we in europe are gettin fked over royally ha

JackBNimble270d ago

Try canada, that's close to $1000cdn plus tax.
Most games this gen don't even take advantage of the ogps5 , so what's the point of the pro other then just another money grab?

Kurt Russell270d ago

I think it basically exists so they can keep the price of the standard model the same without lowering it, and it look an ok deal.

PS4 original had dropped a fair bit this far into it's life cycle.

Elda270d ago

I'm sick of seeing these articles. The PS5 Pro is a premium console for folks that want a premium experience when it comes to playing their games. If the price is too high pay the Pro no mind & stick with your OG PS5, knowing Sony is not putting a gun to anyone's head to buy a PS5 Pro.

SimpleDad270d ago

But everybody wants PS5 pro.

Elda270d ago

They can buy one. The price of the current gen of consoles are not the same price as the last gen of consoles especially when compared to the Pro models. I will admit the price is a little high but I'm not complaining about it because I want one, I have the funds to purchase one & that's my choice. Folks rambling about the price being too high is not going to sway Sony PS to bring the price down unless they put out a 1 tb model which may happen in the future. One has 2 choices buy one or it pay the PS5 Pro no mind.

Markdn270d ago

I put my 700 aside already. Can't wait...

darthv72270d ago

Had they gone with Wifi 6 instead of 7 and stuck with 1tb instead of 2... the price would likely have been in the $550-600 range. Which is only $100-150 more than current 5's on the market. As it is, it is now $200-250 more than current 5.

kayoss270d ago

Yeah, but I’d they did, people will complain why sony didn’t upgrade the hard drive to a 2tb. People will find something to complain about regardless. Jesus can come down from heaven and people will complain that he looks homeless.

Elda270d ago

Again...it's evident Sony wanted to put out a premium console. I'm guessing this type of machine may need more space, the very reason it's 2 tb instead of 1tb including all the bells & whistles. I agree at that price it should have been a disc drive but unfortunately it's not that way. I've always played my games in quality mode because I prefer clear pristine visuals over 60fps but with the Pro I can play my games in quality mode & get the 60fps along with the other bells & whistles so it's a day one buy for me.

jaymacx270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

I’m not mad about them adding 2TB because for the pro model you want higher. I think the big issue is they want $700 without the Disc drive and stand. This really makes Sony look like Apple with giving you barebones. The stand is just a piece of plastic hardly not worth $30 and the disc drive probably isn’t worth $80 either. I think if these were all included a good amount of complaints would be silenced.

darthv72270d ago

^^I am reminded of the PS4 and PS4 Pro both having 1tb and so the PS5 and PS5 Pro could have done the same with both having 1tb. It's not like they took away the option to add to it... people can still do that. It certainly would have saved some $$ while still offering a premium product.

I_am_Batman270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

@Kayoss: That complaint could be easily dismissed by telling those people to upgrade the expandable storage. You can always choose to spend more if you want. Most people won't even need more than 1TB for the rest of the console's life cycle.

Markdn270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

Disc drives are dead to me. It would have annoyed me if they forced me to buy it. Not bought a game on disc since gt5 and the last disc game I owned was killzone shadow fall on launch ps4. and even that was only cause it was bundled. In the console. Consoles are going the way of pc with digital only. If we still have physical media in the next iteration of any console I be supprised

Yup, it's getting stupid as usual and these "journalists" and their click-baity nonsense sucks. Yes it's expensive, but as you say, there's no one forcing anyone to buy the console. It's not like your OG PS5 will stop working.

kayoss270d ago

The people who are complaining are the same people who says, “I’ll will stick with my PC” but they don’t tell you that they spent $1500 on just a video card. Worst case scenario, you wait for the price to go down in a year or so.

343_Guilty_Spark270d ago

Premium experience for PS4 games.

Elda270d ago

Premium experience regardless.

KwietStorm_BLM270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

Pro smartphones at higher pricing have been around for years. High end GPUs sell alongside entry level models every single year. Toyota manufactures Lexus.

PS5 Pro exists: hrrrnndgdgdjdjjjjerdgdggg

Traecy270d ago

I agree. No one is forcing anyone including PlayStation 5 owners to buy the PlayStation 5 Pro. If you want it & can afford the price buy it, if you're complaining about the price or you can't afford it no worries, don't buy it.

I went out looking for the disc drive and no one had any not even on Sony's website. Found one on Targets website.

Berenger270d ago

They were on Amazon and Sony's website this morning

Athlon101270d ago

I had actually checked Best Buy earlier yesterday morning and saw they had them in stock and was going to order one ahead of time. I checked back later in the afternoon and saw new disc drives were no longer available at any best buy location other than open-box. I was a bit surprised the drives were selling out given the mostly negative reaction about the price of the PS5 Pro which is understandable. I ended up purchasing one off Amazon yesterday afternoon. I hate to think that scalpers may be buying up the supply.

Eonjay270d ago

People who don't complain for a living a largely ignored. Its silly to assume that every product that a company makes its being marketed to every customer.

jaymacx270d ago (Edited 270d ago )

Scalpers bought all the PSVR2 PC adapters as well . Sometimes demand is created by a reseller.

Destiny1080270d ago

i suspect that disc drive will work just fine on the PS6, which would mean the PS6 will have a similar design
