You're assuming they've got some unnaturally big profit margin on this, with no evidence of how much this costed them to make.
If they're just trying to maintain normal profit margins, then failure on the Pro just means they won't offer more niche higher performance consoles anymore, and stick to what the masses can afford.

Imagine how crazy it would be if folks who can only afford a 4060 demand the 4090 be offered at the same price. You will never get a poll of all gamers but you can take a statistically robust sample, and get a good idea of how the gaming community feels. IGN did a poll and got over 14k responses…they were overwhelmingly negative.

PS4 Pro only moved around 6M units per year the first few years.
I guess my point is that 14% for a high end "Pro" product may be fine/expected.

This upgrade isnt absolutely necessary, but the pro has significant upgrades that support the selling price. Inflation is very real, not just for consumers like us but also for companies like this.

I think people are going to be a little vocal and just ignore it. It's a mid generation upgrade. Being 'furious' for the PS5 Pro price is silly in and of itself. Now, if this carries implications for the price of the PS6? That warrants fury.

I'm curious to see how it'll sell. Early sales probably won't be too bad, since there are always gonna be people who are willing to pay a much higher premium to get the best available SKU, but once those people have filtered out, I don't see them moving a lot of units at those prices, especially in Europe. I'm expecting sales to collapse soon after launch.

If that turns out to be true, Sony might just keep the production rate low and accept to sell a fraction of the units compared to the PS4 Pro sales. What's more likely in my opinion is that the pressure to reduce cost of production will lead Sony to launch a 1TB variant within the first year of the initial launch.

Europe however will need a pretty significant price drop on top of any cost reduction, because the delta between the base and Pro prices is significantly higher here than it is in the US for some reason. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 700€ disc drive bundle and a 650€ digital version by summer of next year.

That bigger price difference is an interesting mystery. I would think something will happen over time to align that more logically. Perhaps a price increase on base PS5 unfortunately.

Yeah, we'll see how it shakes out. It's not the first time they've made strange pricing decisions either. When the slimmer model launched last year, the price for the digital one had a 1:1 ratio between USD and Euro ($450€), while the physical bundle had a significant difference ($500/550€). So the difference between the digital and physical bundle is 50$ in the US and 100€ in Europe.

That's part of the reason why the current situation is so bad. Not only does the digital Pro console cost 800€, the optical drive is also 120€ as opposed to $80 so the differences just keep piling on.

Edit: By the way we've had higher prices for PC hardware announcements before, but usually real prices level out at an approximate 1:1 ratio after a while. So maybe the same will happen here.

Doesn't the VAT vary by county? If the VAT needs to be embedded/hidden in the price of the advertised product, wouldn't Sony have to publish the worst case price if trying to generalize across the entire EU? Trying to make sense of it...

Holy crap those VATs are in the 25% range for most countries. On a purchase of 700 that's 175. That's wild that a) it's so high and b) the EU gets away with trying to hide them from consumers. Man I hope that never happens in the US, but I wouldn't be surprised at this point

PS4 original had dropped a fair bit this far into it's life cycle.

I will admit the price is a little high but I'm not complaining about it because I want one, I have the funds to purchase one & that's my choice. Had they gone with Wifi 6 instead of 7 and stuck with 1tb instead of 2... the price would likely have been in the $550-600 range. Which is only $100-150 more than current 5's on the market. As it is, it is now $200-250 more than current 5.

Again...it's evident Sony wanted to put out a premium console. I'm guessing this type of machine may need more space, the very reason it's 2 tb instead of 1tb including all the bells & whistles. I agree at that price it should have been a disc drive but unfortunately it's not that way. I've always played my games in quality mode because I prefer clear pristine visuals over 60fps but with the Pro I can play my games in quality mode & get the 60fps along with the other bells & whistles so it's a day one buy for me.

I’m not mad about them adding 2TB because for the pro model you want higher. I think the big issue is they want $700 without the Disc drive and stand. This really makes Sony look like Apple with giving you barebones. The stand is just a piece of plastic hardly not worth $30 and the disc drive probably isn’t worth $80 either. I think if these were all included a good amount of complaints would be silenced.

^^I am reminded of the PS4 and PS4 Pro both having 1tb and so the PS5 and PS5 Pro could have done the same with both having 1tb. It's not like they took away the option to add to it... people can still do that. It certainly would have saved some $$ while still offering a premium product.

@Kayoss: That complaint could be easily dismissed by telling those people to upgrade the expandable storage. You can always choose to spend more if you want. Most people won't even need more than 1TB for the rest of the console's life cycle.

Disc drives are dead to me. It would have annoyed me if they forced me to buy it. Not bought a game on disc since gt5 and the last disc game I owned was killzone shadow fall on launch ps4. and even that was only cause it was bundled. In the console. I had actually checked Best Buy earlier yesterday morning and saw they had them in stock and was going to order one ahead of time. I checked back later in the afternoon and saw new disc drives were no longer available at any best buy location other than open-box. I was a bit surprised the drives were selling out given the mostly negative reaction about the price of the PS5 Pro which is understandable. I ended up purchasing one off Amazon yesterday afternoon. I hate to think that scalpers may be buying up the supply.

It concerns me tbh. The price is high. It's obviously powerful. I think they've put themselves in a tricky situation next gen.
Its an enthusiast model so they may revert to normal pricing on a base next gen console you have to buy to play next gen games. So if they price it at 500...people will say it's not that advanced over the Pro. Because it won't be at that price. Or if they stick to this high price in future. It'll be advanced technology wise but people will go nuts over the price.

I'm actually trading in my OG PS5 because I don't need two and it helps me absorb almost half the cost. So for me its a $400 purchase which I a more than okay with. And like you said, if I wanted the best and couldn't afford it up front I would earn some money and save for it... or I would just have to be happy with what I had. So it's been 24 hours now. People seem to be really confused about the disc drive situation. They seem to think it's digital only forever. They are not realising you can get a disc drive for it. Sony really need to be a bit more clear about it.

Then you have people who just can't afford it and are crying about it. Gaming is a hobby it's a luxury. If you can't afford the pro then don't buy it. Get a standard ps5. People seem to think gaming should be cheap. Unfortunately the way the world is. I remember high end GPU'a use to be £600 I remember I paid roughly that for my gtx 1080 ti about 7 years ago. A rtx 4080 Super it's now £1000.

Then you have people who are happy to spend £200 a year to rent games complaining about the price.

Only complaint I have is. Sony could of just went with two models again. £750 with disc and £700 digital or £700 disc and £650 digital. My other one is the UK price. £700 is about $920 US. Yet the US will be paying about $760 after tax.

Something I just thought of.... if the current 5 offers performance and fidelity modes, and the Pro will blend the two together for existing games... what happens to performance and fidelity modes for future games? Will the base 5 be limited to 30fps fidelity and 60fps performance will be on the Pro like we see now on Series S and X versions of games? There has to be a trade off, because at some point the same walls devs hit now will be hitting again and the pro will have to resort to choices of fidelity and performance.

No, it will be just like today and we know this based on the datapoint where 75% of players prefer Performance over Fidelity. So its actually advantageous for developers to include it at the cost of image quality because that will sell more. The more likely scenario is where since the Pro is already maxed at OG quality IQ @ 60, devs will still include a 30 FPS option but this will just be even more lavish. The cycle repeats itself and next gen they will be selling the promise of Pro Fidelity at 60 FPS on PS6. My question is at what point do we exhaust the utility of increasing Image Quality. Is that even a thing? Because when you look at 8k, it bombed because once you start making displays that are beyond the ability of actual human being to appreciate... whats the point?

PSSR if it works well could upscale an image from 720p / 1080p and it will still look pristine on a 4k Tv, the PS5 Pro has some tricks up its sleeve so i don't think you have to worry about image quality or performance just yet, and i suspect the Switch 2 will have something very similar, we will know more very soon

Look ive been singing playstations praises for a long while but even I know they are starting to resemble apple and its quite frankly shit, this thing costs $1300 here in aus, gross, I'm glad I built my first pc recently so I no longer have to put up with sonys tactics, it was expensive but plays everything FAR better than the pro and even the ps6 will, i still have my launch ps5 but it's gathering dust since I built this beast.

The way I see it is this isn't an "efficient" focused console release and as such should not be compared to a next gen release.
1. It was made using the ps5 as a base, not balancing each part to the other. I believe this would hamper some areas where cost downs could occur.
2. It is releasing with the knowledge that the ps5 is there to be the entry level system. Next gen will target something relative to where sony KNOWS is can get its sales.
3. Sony prices the consoles based on scale of expected sales. (obviously they also have a target based on cost from the planning stage) The ps5 pro can not be sold for a loss due to the low expectation on sales 10%-15% of total ps5's.
4. This gen coincided with a period of high inflation.

To put it another way, look at what they were able to upgrade the ps5 to for $780 (disc drive for fairness) in comparison to the 2 tb series X at $600. I feel like this angle is why I am not worried about the ps6 price.

The ps4 pro was only slightly more expensive then the ps4 (seemed like a steal and absolute no brainer at the time, especially for those picking up their first ps4 or had just bought into the blossoming 4k tv boom).

Before they announced the price I thought the showcase was particularly underwhelming, it just want enough for me to warrant getting it. The ps4 pro with the whatever type of 4k it was knocking out was clearly a sizeable step, and everyone I should just the intro of horizon in 4k could see the difference.

Getting to use essentially both graphics modes simultaneously or something close to that isn’t enough for me personally. I can have one or the other now, for £700 I want to see something new.

That’s the bottom line for me I think.
