What's strange to me is that Sony cut the PS4 Pro's lifespan too short. They stopped making them at the end of 2020, but they could have sold more if they kept making more, just give it a price drop when the PS5 released, and they'd sell decently well.

Fishy Fingers248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

Not really strange at all, with years of cross gen games planned (regardless of "we believe in generations") they wouldnt want a much cheaper PS4 Pro cannibalising PS5 sales.

They'll likely do the same when PS6 is annouced.

RaidenBlack248d ago

PS5 Pro will surely get a price cut.. pretty early I reckon

purple101248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

like, on release day, would be good.

lets face it, they are banking GTA6. as this things going to play it the best, by a country mile, and currently, thats its best selling point. 1, solitary, third party game.

darthv72248d ago

And here I feel so much emphasis is being put on GTA6 that it could end up sucking because so much emphasis is being put on it. GTA5 has had so many re-releases, it is the Skyrim of the GTA scene and that makes whatever is slated to follow under even more scrutiny that people's expectations are going to be really high. If they dont deliver, can you imagine the consumer backlash?

Im not a GTA player, so it makes no difference to me. But to those who are... I hope for the best.

It will also play UE5 games better, and PS4 games will get a boost.

derek248d ago

No they won't cut the price. The base model went up in price recently in certain regions. Component prices are going down and there was no way Sony was ever not going to make a profit on an elite version of anything.

Goodguy01248d ago

Nope. The ps4 pro didn't really get a price drop til current gen. Sony has the base ps5 which is what they really want to sell so they have no reason to for the pro version as it's aimed at a smaller audience.

CrashMania248d ago

There is a market for thi, the enthusiasts that must have the best playstation console experience, I can still seeing it selling reasonably well. For me £700 is just a bit too far especially being only digital. I kinda feel if it was £600, even digital only, it'd have been just about acceptable. Cut down the storage to 1tb and slashing it down even by £50 would have been something at least, this is a bit of a mistep when you can grab a digital only PS5 for £380-90, almost half the price.

I also didn't think they did a great job showing it off, should have doubled the time, shown off different games that had a somewhat rough ride on PS5 so far, maybe FF16 and Rebirth performance modes showing much better resolution, or even Wukong. Games like Horizon and Rift Apart already looked fantastic and were very well optimised on base PS5. Maybe they will give it more of a spotlight at the inevitable state of play.

mkis007247d ago

People are leaving out the trade In factor too. I will sell my ps5 for at least 300 bucks. Therefore I'm only spending about 400-500 on the pro.

Goodguy01248d ago

I would guess it'll do about 10% of base's in lifetime. Way too many will be aftaid of that price and it's definitely for the core and enthusiasts only.

I got the ps4 pro and honestly, it really didn't much to improve, minor performance bumps only. I do hope the ps5 pro does a better job considering the $200 increase. It's kinda sad there are still quite a few games this gen that struggle hitting 60fps constantly on current console hardware and don't even look vastly improved from last gen graphics.

Why The Rumored $1 Billion Budget For Grand Theft Auto VI Does Not Add Up

Here's why the rumored $1 billion budget for Rockstar Games' upcoming open world action game, Grand Theft Auto VI, doesn't quite add up.

"Or was it i̶n̶f̶o̶r̶m̶e̶d̶ guesswork from analysts?"

Video game budgets will always be fictional, just like Hollywood movies. Unless there are receipts it's all speculation.

And Take Two has a marketing department with an already approved budget (just like studios in Hollywood).

thorstein13h ago

(Continue...I was in the Lincoln Tunnel)
Budgeting isn't included in the total cost because it is a separate budget. These companies intentionally inflate the numbers so they pay less in taxes.

This is not a new trend. And if you give your CEO $30 million per year and a game takes 5 years, you just add that $150million to the budget (CNN).

isarai9h ago

I don't know where they get these numbers, absolutely NO games is spending anywhere near that amount on production even including marketing. If we're talking lifetime estimates for like a 10yr plan maybe, but even that would be a very vague projection. RDR2 at the time of release cost less that GTAV did and GTAV cost about 265mil with marketing being an average of about 200-300mil each.

Lightning779h ago

I believe it's somewhere around there. Cod is 700m$ to make. I think GTA could be around there if not more. The insane level of detail in the trailer says it all.

Yeah I believe it's around there personally.

goken2h ago

The $700m cod budget is for tax purposes imho.
I also seriously doubt a game even as top notch as GTA would cost a billion to make.

QuantumMechanic1h ago

Yeah, that would be tax fraud. Public companies are independenly audited. They cannot just put whatever number they want "for tax purposes".

SimpleSlave37m ago

To be fair, the $700 million in development costs were over the game’s lifecycle, not just development - Black Ops Cold War (2020) in this case. And of course, this also include their marketing campaign.

But then, you take into account Activision Blizzard's shenanigans for not paying taxes, even getting tax refunds, moving billions to tax havens, plus all the money paid by Microsawft and Sony for exclusive deals, and I bet you that figure is substantially way lower than $700 millions. And I do mean SUBSTANTIALLY lower than that.

Oh, and if you think Rockstar hasn't figure out that scheme by now, lol, they have. They all have.

Doom: The Dark Ages Launches to a Peak of 30k Concurrent Users

Doom: The Dark Ages has hit a peak of just under 31,000 concurrent players at launch, a figure much lower than both Doom and Doom: Eternal.

I guess that means the game is trash?

PRIMORDUS4h ago

No it's good but for $70 and Denuvo DRM on PC hard pass.

pwnmaster30003h ago

Don’t matter, if it’s not hitting 100k+ it’s considered trash and a failure.
That’s the new standard apparently

This game just didn't excite me like the last 2. I'm passing on it this time.

JEECE3h ago

Spin off vibe without the spin off price.

LucasRuinedChildhood5h ago

Could be affected by:
- A percentage of people will play this on GamePass which the last 2 games did not launch on.
- A percentage of players bought the Deluxe Edition which included early access, reducing the peak as players will start playing it on different days.

PRIMORDUS4h ago

Price most likely the issue, and while most don't know or care about Denuvo on PC, if you lower the price I'm sure it will sell more on all platforms.

VersusDMC2h ago

Well Clair obscure had the same situation(gamepass) and had a concurrent high of 150k and currently at 50k.

LucasRuinedChildhood32m ago(Edited 18m ago)

Sure, but those numbers are higher than previous Doom games' peak on Steam as well.
- Doom 2016 (44,269)
- Doom: Eternal (104,891)

It seems like the peak would at least as high as Doom 2016.

Bit confused on one thing. That graph only starts from May 15. They don't seem to have been able to capture data for the early access players who started playing days before that.

LucasRuinedChildhood13m ago

So basically, I'm talking about relative to the peak numbers of the prior games.

I'm not saying that a game that released on GamePass cannot have high numbers on Steam. But the effect isn't 0%. And Early Access also affects the peak.
