And y'all were whining about PS5 Pro's 8 core Ryzen being too weak... pick a complaint and stick with it. A weak 6 core CPU is going to have far worse framerates than a PS5 Pro. The 4060 is also a weak GPU compared to PS5 Pro. A 4060 is roughly equivalent to a AMD RX 7600. PS5 Pro is equivalent to a 7700XT, but with the addition of PSSR... and you have to pay $50 more for that underpowered PC that won't see most of those playstation games for years, if at all. Also, a "disc drive" and a "4K UHD Blu-Ray drive" are far from the same thing. Those cost $100 for PC as well. Try to learn a thing or two about the tech you talk about.

Sony has not deviated from their 10 year lifespan... PS5 will continue to get great games for years to come, but there's now an option to play them at higher resolutions and framerates with better ray tracing, for those who want to pay for it.

Personally I like to think that it could be one of the reasons this generation has been a tad lacklustre, because mid gen consoles started last gen and not only were we spoilt by a sort of sneak peak into this gen but also it gave companies more of a reason to support last gen for longer rather than moving on since people had bought the base console and the mid gen ones. The PS4 Pro came out in 2016 and the PS4 came out in 2013, it's a lot easy to justify moving on from a console released in 2013 than one only released 4 years before the new one is announced.

A PC decent enough to do better in gaming than the PS5 would only be a few hundred more than what it'll cost to buy this plus the drive. Add the yearly sub of PLUS which you don't need on a PC to play multiplayer games and a PC is actually a far better investment for gaming than owning a PS over the last gen and a half. I don't even own a PC, I played exclusively on PS4 for the whole gen, infact I waited and bought the Pro model. This generation I decided to go with the Deck which has been better for me than buying a PS.

I am not sure why the surprise. Everything we have seen from Sony has lead me to believe the Pro was going to cost, and going forward gives you an idea on what PS6 is going to cost. What did they expect? Not only it's priced as if Sony traded places with Apple, they choose to make an announcement like that outside of a major game showcase event, that could at least have soften the blow, instead the lack of new games only remark the major issue of the gen with not moving on from last gen games.

I mean, instead of telling up the bad news along with a bunch of new AAA games that look spectacular on this new console, they basically went "here it is, it'll cost you close to a 1000 bucks with a disc drive and a bit of plastic to stand up and it's gonna play the same PS4 games we already remastered for the PS4 Pro and the PS5, but now the slider thingies will allow you to move everything to the max on the PS5 Pro"... No shit the reaction was "largely negative", people can only replay God of War, Horizon and TLOU for the extra pixels so many times before they feel ripped off.

The only positive thing about this is that this time the mid gen upgrade seen to be entirely optional. PS4 to PS4 Pro there were some changes which meant PS4 Pro games could load much faster or perform considerably better, to the point some late gen games struggled a bit on the base model PS4. The PS5 Pro seems like it will make it's mission to run the performance mode with all the bells and whistles of the graphical mode and than some, but if you don't care about that or is ok to choose between performance or graphic modes, there's not much else changing to affect you. Which should mean a relatively easier wait for a full gen upgrade in the PS6... Except now the price has us all worried about that too.

Look it up. The dollar value of things is forever going to keep going up. Sometimes at a faster place (recently), sometimes at a slower pace.

The moral of the story is that the actual intrinsic cost of consoles has been pretty consistent over the last three decades once you adjust for the time-value-of-money.

I think a big factor this time is that it’s not a brand new console, it’s still a ps5 at the end of the day and all games MUST work on the base PS5 anyway. Similar to series s/x. So a lot of the new features promised won’t be implemented or limited.

The second is that those gens actually had good games built for them. This gen still has a lot of games that work on the PS4, and the games are really not as good as previous gens.

So essentially paying a lot to play mediocre games that won’t use the full PS5 pro features and that run on PS4? Hmm. Not sure.

I understand your argument. My point is simply that, disconnected from the broader dialogue out there, the price of the hardware itself is based on the economic realities of the present day. Of course Sony could price the console below its cost, but the market conditions wouldn’t make sense for them to lose money on something out of the goodness of their hearts. Sony knows that this is a low volume piece of hardware, and so the economies of scale won’t be nearly the same as the base console.

This is an enthusiast machine made for the 10-15% of gamers that want the tech and the power to play their games with the best performance. That choice, even though it is an expensive one, is still nice to have. The base console is still the flagship, but gamers who desire the graphics power and can stomach the price have their option too.

Bottomline, the Pro is not meant for most gamers, but in a historical context, the price isn’t completely ridiculous either.

Seems like it went as expected. It's the gamers who for some magical reason thought the price would be reasonable, after the Slims which they reduced their manufacturing cost with no intentions on passing that on to consumers at a lower price. I am really not surprised by this at all. I think Sony is at a point with little competition from MS in console sales and Nintendo in their own lane, they can kind of write their own script and gamers will buy cause its a PlayStation and 5 generations have taught that is what they do. They must have seen through the logistics, despite having a Pro model under development for sure, and decided that they've already botched this generation far enough, they're not gonna negatively impact them in this regard,anymore.

While it's crazy that the price is US$699 for a digital-only option, I think it's even crazier that the PS5 had a price increase rather than the traditional price cut after 4 years being in the market. PS4 launched at US$399 in 2013 and the slim version came out at US$299 in 2016. PS5 digital edition came out in 2020 at US$399 and then the Slim variant launched last year at US$450, HIGHER than the FAT version. The PS5 is an obsolete tech and at US$450, it doesn't make sense to buy new in 2024.

Far to high an asking price. I waited a long while like most to get my Ps5 with the scalpers runing riot during covid. Finally got it and knew the pro was still more than likely. Like most consoles I like to collect them and on the most part I've enoyed all I've purchased. Having some background details be a bit sharper at 60 fps with maybe some barley noticeable extra details ( unless you zoom in ) just doesn't cut it for that price I'm afraid. I love PS but I do not just blindly support everything they do.

It's a high price for an upgrade in graphic settings, you aren't getting anything "new" so that's the issue, such like the Ps4 pro, you go from 4k 30 to 4k 60, you're still playing the same game across both consoles.
People forget to remember you aren't unlocking features that are highly noticeable such as older consoles. You buy a Ps2, and you see a game on a Ps3, you are locked out until you get a Ps3.

You buy a Ps4, and you see a game on the 4 Pro, you are only locked away from the graphic of frame rate barriers.

So this "wow factor" isn't a "I'm going to miss out" it's more of a "I'll have a better experience." Such like buying a new phone every year, we get better speeds, sharper photos/video, but we don't get new features.

Pro consoles don't seem necessary for this gen simply due to how slow it started. Then you give it a 700 price tag with no disk drive just make it pointless in my opinion. I'd rather wait 4 short years for next gen then jump isn't even that big anyway. This generation probably the weakest in console history. There hasn't been a defining moment that make this gen memorable. Gta6 and the later years games will be the only hope but I don't see anything moving the needle to the level past gen games have.
