They'd be really dumb if they didn't but, I mean, it is Nintendo and they do love making you repurchase things.

Michiel1989275d ago

I'd say it's smart, not consumer friendly, but definitely smart if you know your audience will buy your games again at full price anyway.

Vits275d ago

It would be super funny, given that a good chunk of Switch games are repurposed Wii U games, and they even ask for more money than the original versions were sold for. If that happened again, it would be so comical—just imagine a New Super Mario Bros. Wii U Deluxe Plus, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Ultra, Bayonetta 2 Once Again, etc.

Cacabunga275d ago

For me it’s cool if it’s BC but they will still remaster games and release them full price.
Like i sense it will launch with Mario kart 8 with all DLCs “for those who want it”. Nintendo has a huge fanboy base that will buy anything.

MrBaskerville275d ago (Edited 275d ago )

They almost always do BC, when the physical format allows it. Switch is the first time they didn't do somehing since Gamecube. Probably because you can't fit a dvd into a switch.

DodoDojo275d ago

Yeah they've been good with bc, not only for games but their controllers too.

VersusDMC275d ago

You couldn't put a UMD disk into a VITA but you could play your purchased PSN PSP games on it. They could have transferred eshop purchases but they wanted the double dip.

MrBaskerville275d ago

@versusdmc
They revamped their entire online system. It wouldn't have been easy. There's also the issue that the Wiiu is weird and unpopular. Every port requires a lot of work.

Chocoburger276d ago

I'd like to believe that Nintendo planned to have BC planned in advance when they decided to use NVIDIA's arm chipset. Nintendo has enjoyed supporting BC whenever possible with the GBC, GBA, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U systems.

Demetrius275d ago

Imagine switch 2 doing this while sony still doesnt🤦🏾 lmao I thought sony would beat them to it, I would love to be able to play infamous 1&2 again

NotoriousWhiz275d ago

It will be backwards compatible with the Switch not with any other consoles before that.

I suspect PS6 will also be backwards compatible with PS5.

Michiel1989275d ago

ps3 backwards compatibility is never gonna happen sadly, cause it has a cell processor.

Cacabunga275d ago

Nothing sad, get one for no money

Vits275d ago

Emulation is a viable option, and Sony could have easily implemented it since they have all the documentation of the original console. Plus, the PS5 is powerful enough to handle it. They chose not to do it simply because they weren't interested.

Michiel1989274d ago

Vits they will need a cell chip in the ps5 and looking at how all the bells and whistles almost made the ps3 fail, they will not do it again. It's a shame, but it will never happen

Vits274d ago

No they wouldn't. That is the whole point of software emulation.

Or do you think something like the Steam Deck has a secret Cell ship tucked there somewhere to be able to emulate PS3 titles?

@Demetrius I know you’re trolling but your analogy is a bad one because you are saying PS5 is inferior to Switch 2 because it doesn’t have backwards compatibility with the generation before last, the PS3 generation, in comparison to the, as yet unreleased, Switch 2 which will likely have backwards compatibility with its previous generation the Switch 1. But like the Switch 2, PS5 does have BC work its previous generation the PS4 generation.

If the Switch 2 has backwards compatibility with the Nintendo generation before last that would mean it can play Wii U games and then your face palm would be fitting - but until that happens you have revealed yourself to not have a reasonable breadth of knowledge that most people on this forum likely have.

LucasRuinedChildhood275d ago

The PS5 was backwards compatible with console prior to it 4 years ago ...

JEECE275d ago

Lol it's cute that you think it's going to have full BC with any consoles before the Switch. Everything else will be part of the Nintendo Online Subscription, if it is available at all.

I’m really hoping it will be. I’m also hoping that means physical games bc as well.
