it being without a disk drive and possibly a attachable one, could be a " good " thing.

the price wouldnt be super outrages.

but we'll know for sure soon

CrashMania292d ago

I think they'll do it this way to keep the price down a bit and use the existing drive for digital models, I'd personally rather have a standard disc model, but it's probably to save on manufacturing costs and such, assuming this is all correct info.

VenomUK290d ago

If you're trying to work out if you can afford it then it's not for you - honest.

The PS5 Pro is a deliberately premium console only for the enthusiasts who really want it. For everyone else the standard model is fine, it runs the same games.

I'd be willing to pay £700 - that's SEVEN HUNDRED British Pounds which (after UK sales tax of 20% is removed) is $734.

ANIALATOR136289d ago

@VenomUK I doubt it'll be that price. Probably more like £600

-Foxtrot292d ago

I’m scared they might try this with the PS6

“Oh want a disc drive? Then buy the attachable”

While the console is the same price as it would with one

gold_drake292d ago

... me too ha.

the dd would be 100 quid on top of the console itself.

I_am_Batman291d ago

They're not really willing to sell consoles at a significant loss anymore, but I don't think they'll ever be too greedy on the price of the digital base console. That's the one they want you to buy after all.

Wouldn't be surprised if they ratchet up the profit margin on the optional disc drives over time though.

Eonjay291d ago

Really depends. If they come in for $599 or less then its a wash given the 2TB Xbox model price.

darthv72291d ago

Im sure they are looking at the sales data of people who bought only the digital 5 as well as those who bought the digital slim 5 and the subsequent drive separately. It will give them the a good idea as to if the add-on is worth it to keep for the impending 6 or not. And maybe the same drive we have now will work on the 6.

I dont think there is much in the way of optical drive improvements over the next few years. Even bluray production is in decline with movies and the games dont play from the discs anyways like a movie does. So the optical drive is becoming less and less needed. I get there is a segment who wants to keep it alive... but if even PC users have ditched the slow spinning medium... console users will likely have to accept the same fate at some point. Especially when the games are starting to exceed the capacity and in many cases not all of the data is present.

anast290d ago

They will soon or later.

just_looken290d ago

Why not they continue to price hike it continue to nickel dime the players and continue to tack on drm bs like the proprietary connection of the disc drive. Oh there new playstation link tech that only allows for certified headsets.

0 pushback praise in the media a round of applause on sites like this that adore sony.

Why not make ps6 like a imac or iphone over expensive with accessories that only work for it.

So does that mean people will now take their drive from their other model and put it in the pro leaving a load of playstations with missing drives. So it will be like all those Wii U's with missing Gamepads. Bad idea.

MajorLazer290d ago

The missing drives can always be replaced with a new one.

SonyStyled290d ago

The PS5 slim physical model has detachable drive you can put on a pro, which would turn your PS5 slim physical into the digital model. You could also buy a PS5 digital, add on the disc drive to make it the physical model slim, then move that disc drive to a pro if one wanted. Not really the same as losing a Wii U game pad but more similar to attaching/detaching HDDs from console to console on the original 360

Jingsing290d ago

It will basically make a bunch of redundant consoles when Sony stops selling the drives for them and no longer supports it digitally.

TheEroica290d ago

Listening to a Sony fan pacify no disk drive after months of them claiming doomsday because Microsoft had a prototype mock up of a disk less series x is a special kind of insanity.

darthv72290d ago

you know there is a difference between no disc drive in the box and no disc drive at all.... right?

Pre-ordering some good quality popcorn for an early September weekend ...
Can already smell the new Capcom, Kojima, ND, Barlog, SP's new trailers cookin' in the editing rooms.
Pragmata, RE9, DS2, GoT2 will be there surely

DOMination-290d ago

Would love to see more of Pragmata but I worry it could be this generations Deep Down

RaidenBlack289d ago

Damn, this article submission came back from the dead

ocelot07291d ago

Forward thinking from Sony. Same drive for the slim works for the pro. Great idea imo. I'll happily sell my slim minus the drive for £250 and attach the drive to the pro.

darthv72291d ago

Did you buy the slim initially w/o the drive? I ask because if you didnt then you'd have a big empty space where a panel should be. And I dont know if they are selling blank plates at the moment but whoever buys it should be able to track one down... or they get the drive to fill it too.

Eonjay290d ago

The slim models all come with all the faceplate. So if you remove the drive you can just change to the matching faceplate.

90sGamingWasBetter291d ago

The closer this gets the more interested I am in it, I had little interest when first announced.

Elda291d ago

As long as it has a disc drive or you can add a disc drive I will buy day one. If the console is just all digital without any disc drive then it's a hard pass for me.
