KillZone 2 Vs Crysis: Screenshot And Graphics Comparison

If there ever was a graphical battle to be fought between two titanous games, I don't think it would get any bigger than this. Gird tight your loins fanboys, because this is going to be one hellacious comparison.

Now many of you would presume that Crysis is two years old in comparison to KillZone 2, and that perhaps this is an uneven comparison in favor of KillZone 2. In actuality, it's the other way around.

wow i underestimated Crysis

......but theres still something about KZ2's animation that just makes me quiver. U can see its beautiful anime even in its screenshots, smh

But dammit call me a non believer if u want....Crysis has the best graphics i ever seen, i almost cried at the realism of that jungle shot

EDIT: True about that gun quote the author spoke on "When it comes to the weapons and character models, I think KillZone 2 wins out by a dinkle bit. As you can see, KZ2 maintains some excellent detail that completely forgoes the use of parallax textures on the weapons, and just goes straight for the actual geometric indentations and crevices. Nice. Crysis isn't too far behind, though, but the lacking originality in some of the weapons does seem to stand out given the game's super-sharp look."

I was on Times Square the other day lookin at a Armed Guard's what seem to be a modified M-16 rifle. And its not as technical as they make it seem in Crysis. What i mean is, Crysis looks like they added TOO MUCH REALISM (or over did it) into their guns , while KZ2 maintained the actual gritty look of their guns.....much how Black did

Rice5957d ago

Crysis looks to real to be a video game, theres no ridiculous lighting, crazy enviroments, over the top special effects, stupid bloom, etc It as if I can look at screenshots at crysis then look outside the windows and see no big difference.

MasFlowKiller5957d ago

you guys do know Crysis is a game that requires a hardcore PC to run, while killzone 2 is a console game,

PC games have all way had the advantage.

Killzone 2 is the best looking console game to date

Crysis is the best look game to date

Doppy5957d ago

See Crysis running at its max, and you'll know what graphics truly are.

Killzone 2 looks extremely good, but a full powered Crysis is untouchable, at this point in time.

Irving5957d ago

It doesn't matter which one wins, sitting on a same bench as Crysis is an achievement in itself for a home console game. People were comparing Uncharted to Crysis last year, and I bet they'll do it with Uncharted 2 as well. How many games on that 'other' console were compared to Crysis, shot by shot?

caladbolg7775957d ago

Even comparing Killzone 2 to Crysis is a point in KZ2's favor.

will115957d ago (Edited 5957d ago )

I am a very dedicated PS3 fanboy but i personally think crysis looks better.

freeblue5957d ago

they should run Crysis in a 800 buck pc.. i even let them use it on a 900 bucks one.

Bathyj5957d ago

No doubt about it, Crysis is gorgeous, but all I've seen is screenshots.

Whats the animation and the hit responses like. Does it have the same weighty feel as Killzone?

I'm just wondering how Killzone really does compare, as an overall package.

INehalemEXI5957d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

Textures goes to Crysis mostly

Animation, hit response goes to KZ2

Water goes to Crysis

Open World Crysis / KZ2 Linear

Character Models goes to KZ2

Guns goes to KZ2

Wheather fx goes to KZ2

atmosphere goes to KZ2

Physics and lighting goes to hard to say at this point for me.

Flora/Fauna goes to Crysis

Level of destructability, and explosions both are impressive in this area and I need to see more of KZ2 before I decided.

Tanks, spaceships, Turrets, aircraft goes to KZ2

best sci fi art direction goes to KZ2

Best alien goes to Crysis

Modability goes to Crysis

level population, amount of objects/meshes goes to crysis

GrandTheftZamboni5957d ago

Judging from these two videos, Crysis has advantage in what seems to be higher resolution and colours. Those rocks and smoke look gorgeous too.

On the other hand, I didn't notice that the Crysis engine takes into account indirect lighting that is noticeable at around one third of Killzone video, when the wall is illuminated from the floor by the door. Otherwise the support beam shadow in Crysis video (at 4/5) would be illuminated from the lockers.

Also, firing weapons in Crysis doesn't light up surrounding objects as Killzone does.

Why dis5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

Closest thing to crysis on consoles is Warhoud(even tagged as such by the industry)

Check out this "old" ass off screen video of the game being played on the 360(in menue you can see 360 buttons)
http://www.youtube.com/watc...
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Just wait untill the polish is added this footage is well over an year old if not almost 2 years.

Chrome 2 will be up their with their other title.

This old preview screen is from 3 years ago lol
http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/...

Next-gen is coming for sure but KZ2 and PS3 will not be the pinnacle of console gaming(Alan Wake and Splinter cell I think will be up there too)

Kleptic5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

say whatever you want about crysis...and crysis undoubtedly screams at screen shots...

but crysis...on max settings...still can't touch the death animation, or animation in general, of killzone 2...Killzone 2 also has a lighting system that is arguably more advanced than that of crysis...Crysis in most situations uses a real time dynamic 'time of day' source...in which its the sun...of course the shadowing is as 'soft' as it can get, which it should be... as to get it to look that good it takes a federal reserve of memory...but killzone 2 toasts cryengine 2 in terms of sources...every single light you see in killzone 2 is ALWAYS a real light...a light that creates dynamic shadows realistically around everything that it should...this includes lights attached to character models (goggles, and glow lights on friendly NPCs)...it includes muzzle flares from firing a weapon (the fare creates shadows around everything that it should)...bolts of lightning are all sources...that create double shadows over the already existed 'baked' lighting...etc etc etc...

Killzone 2 also renders fully dynamic and volumetric particle effects...with sparks flying that all have full physics calculated...firing into metal objects results in a shower of sparks that all bounce and clip off objects and character models...grenade explosions are violently blown around by procedural wind (as well as the said sparks)...

Crysis lacks in every area I just pointed out...these are all things that a screen shot rarely illustrate...another tech side of this is AI...where clips of yet to be released reviews of killzone 2 point to 'superb' AI...Crysis was always criticized in this area...with radically difficult AI 'spotting' (where you could be seen and fired at unrealistically...same problem as Far Cry 2)...its difficult to judge great AI (something Fear had in spades) but that isn't broken entirely...a difficult AI opponent does not always mean it has good AI...poor AI rendering can result in AI that is able to judge your actions in a way that no human player could...its similar to Quake III on nightmare...just because its unbeatable, does not mean its advanced...

but the fact stands that killzone 2 is the ONLY console game to even be worth mentioning in a comparison with Crysis...it definitely doesn't top it overall...but it definitely beats Crysis in several major areas...while a 512mb equipped console will never pull off the texture detail, soft shadowing, or AA that Crysis on max can...the fact that killzone 2 can still look better than any other console game in all 3 of these area, and have hundreds of individual real lights on screen at once...as well as tons of particle effects and everything going on at once...easily makes the PS3 live up to what Sony was saying all along...

its the most powerful video game console ever created...period...

Bubbles for Kleptic. As always interesting and informative posts.

Helghast5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

I just watched a bunch of CRYSIS videos on GameTrailers and I have to honestly say that it's ragdoll-physics and death-animation suck! They seriously reminded me of FarCry Vengeance on the Wii.

When someone dies in CRYSIS they either fall like they were a puppet who's string got cut, or they go sliding on the ground for 50 feet. I remember when XPLAY reviewed it they talked about some issues with the physics, and specifically death-animations. We've all seen how amazing KZ2's death animations are so there's no doubt KZ2 takes that category.

As far as graphics go, from every CRYSIS review and word-of-mouth, people say you can turn it up to max on your $5,000 PC but it won't run properly. GameTrailers said "don't believe the screenshots, you have to turn it down to medium to get it to not freeze and after that it doesn't stand out amongst other graphically impressive games.

KillZone 2 is is VERY close to a medium-running CRYSIS and in order to play KZ2 all you need is $460 instead of $5,000+

jib5956d ago

never played crysis myself but it does look good:

http://www.gametrailers.com...

BattleAxe5956d ago

All I can say is that I can't wait for Killzone 2, and I can't wait for Crysis to hit the PS3. ;)

hay5956d ago

I've finished Crysis. On max details it's almost fotorealistic but I found it hard to feel any depth. Finished the game in 5 hrs, each weapon didn't have unique distinctive feeling, everything felt the same. I picked arms just by their functionality, not preferences(like in HL for example), there was no ending except 3 minute cutscene which said "wait for the next crysis", and there was plenty physics bugs like whirling rubble, or the fact that you could actually kill yourself running into solid objects.

To sum it up:
Visuals: blown my mind on max details.
Animations: were ok. Nothing special, nothing eye-soaring.
Music: Inon Zur. That tells all.
Length: 5 hours. It defined meaning of 'short'.
Story: It was ok during the game. Ending was totally disappointing.
Fun factor(excluding visuals): Waste of time.
Fun factor(including visuals): Average.

Consoldtobots5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

graphics shmamics, when it comes to gameplay and physics KZ2 makes Crysis look like a Wii game. There is more to GAMEPLAY than graphics alone. That is where Crysis failed miserably. Crysis got half the formula, KZ2 is the whole package.

Crysis is Jennifer Anniston, while KZ2 is Angelina Jolie, not even a contest.

btw I stopped reading at "titanous" I refuse to give hits to someone that needs to go back to freshman english in high school.

360 man5956d ago

i have to disagree with on crysis's physics

they are by farrrrr the most advanced physics we have ever witnessed in a game

shovelbum5956d ago

KZ2 looks great and there is no denying that but anyone who has a high-end computer that can run Crysis as intended knows that there is no real comparison. Aside from that, it is nearly impossible to even compare the games visually given the environments from the screenshots because the eye will often deceive the brain. A tropical paradise is almost always going to look better than the interior of a concrete industrial world. Either way KZ2 visuals alone look far superior than any other console game to date but I do hate the overused grays/browns in video games today.

pixelsword5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

Because those are both tech demos, and not actual gameplay.

Anyways, when Crysis hits the PS3, I'll make the comparison myself... because I can.

slinkey1235956d ago

Crysis running on my PC :) with natural mod. The mod actually makes the game look better and run better. In that screen im getting 25 FPS and thats on a ATI hd 4870.

pixelsword5956d ago

...When I run it, I have to disable everything because I have a weaker setup.

What I really need to do is get a new graphics card and some ram.

sa_nick5956d ago

Shouldn't they be running Crysis on a $400 PC to be fair?

iamtehpwn5956d ago

They actually HIRED an Art director for KZ2. Crysis, wtf, it's a technical master piece, but no art style at all.

Ace_Shooter5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

a PC with ultra high settings which costs probably atLEAST $2,000.00 US dollars looks better than a console game you can play for roughly $485 US dollars?? ($399 console +Tax and Killzone 2) you gotta be f'ng kidding me!?!? The real comparison should be console to console exclusive games. Compare Killzone 2 to Gears of War 2 and check out those results..

Edit: or do what sa_nick said lol

Danja5956d ago

Crysis looks great no doubt about that...but you have to shell out alot of dough to be able to actually appreciate the game for what it is..

where as KZ2 is a console game and it's arguably the most technically impressive console game to date and for it to be compared to Crysis says alot about the power of the PS3..

KZ2 looks better IMO , it had better animations and better atmosphere ...it doesn't look bland and bright like Crysis

evrfighter5956d ago

you don't need a 2000 dollar pc to run crysis on high I beat the game on high @ 1280x1024 on my $650 setup. I can piece it together and show you show screens if anyone wants. Even though I've already listed my setup by part and cost before on an article similar to this.

CommonSense5956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

if you are a console gamer. you don't have a clu about graphics. plain and simple. pc graphics have been better for the past 5 years than they are NOW on consoles. and i'm sorry to the idiot fanboys who praise their systems like they are gods. but they aren't. consoles will never look as good as PC. crysis vs kz2. come on now. and by the way. far cry 2 on PC looks better than crysis on PC. but console gamers still believe crysis is the best pc demonstration of quality because far cry 2 doesn't look that great on console.

comparisons should be left between 360 and ps3. pc should stay out of it cuz console can't touch it.

i understand killzone 2 is a great looking game...but that's console exclusive. if you put the same game on PC, high end pc owners would be disappointed in the graphics. that's just the way it is.

@ Donja: Bland and bright???? are you kidding me??? so having a full color spectrum is "bland" to you? that has to be the most moronic thing you could say to convince yourself your ps3 comes close to a high end pc. crysis actually uses all colors of the spectrum and still looks amazing. games like gears of war, kz2, resistance...they have to remove shades of bright colors like greens and bright reds so you don't notice their flaws. bland and colorless is more like it. i want kz2 as much as the next guy, but stop praising it for what it lacks. kz2, in no way, compares to the latest titles on pc. console games often have to cheat color quality as a way of compensating for what today's consoles can't achieve. AA / AF or super HIGH resolutions.

Thugbot1875956d ago (Edited 5956d ago )

Crysis is Killer, will say the game had a lot of bugs first day out. But graphics are something you have to see to believe. When you look at the power suit, it has crazy detail like its almost living muscle. Love it.

BTW: You don't need a killer computer to play it just a decent video card and ram.

duplissi5950d ago

im sorry why dis, but those two videos look like ass, now im not saying the game does but the vids arent good representations. now the screen is good but not ground breaking.

I think Killzone 2 will do very well being that all people can compare it to is crysis and that runs on a high end pc .That don't happen alot to console games

MURKERR5957d ago (Edited 5957d ago )

in MY opinion watching the games in motion i prefer killzone, crysis guns look floaty no real weight behind them and the graphics are very clean, sharp edges,i prefer killzones art style it has character

killzone beats it in motion because of the weighty feeling and because the enviroment doesnt look like its had a cleaning lady polishing it, its gritty

40cal5957d ago

I also think that KILLZONE 2 looks better than Crysis in motion, though Crysis dose have a higher level of realism in screen shots.

Max Power5957d ago

dude i agree, after watching the videos, i like the art style that kz2 employs. Crysis looks way to clean, and during the video i would look around at the background and what not, and i have to give the nod to kz2 with the amount of details with in the textures and such.

MURKERR5957d ago

crysis has the too clean look, like you should wipe your feet before you enter the game

definately killzone for me personally its gritty

Bathyj5957d ago

Thanks guys, you answered my above question. Guess I should have watched the videos and read all the posts. You're right to, its Killzones grttiness that sells it. That suspends your disbelief. i had a feeling it might. One of the things I didn't like about gears 2, after playing Resistance and watching KZ videos, it felt so static, the environment so uninteractve. Sure thers some bullet chipping and stuff but it felt very rudimentary.

Sarcasm5956d ago

This is a stupid argument, at the same time it's amazing that a PS3 game is being compared to a super high end PC game.

One thing that I love about Killzone 2, is just the way the bullets hit your enemies. It feels as if each bullet you can feel it carve into their armor and their bodies.

Judging by that video of Crysis, it looks like the bullets have no effect on the person you're shooting and each bullet just deflects off as if it's a BB gun pellet.

And to be fair, if Killzone 2 was a PC game, then it would easily trump Crysis in terms of special effects, lighting, art design, gore, hit response system, bullet effects.

The Lazy One5956d ago

it looks uncomfortably real.

The trees and leaves are nearly photorealistic, but when you see the ground textures (clearly not real) or characters (also clearly not real) it makes you uncomfortable, as if something is amiss.

I would say environments goes hands down to crysis still. I've never seen a game that looked so a$$blastingly realistic when compared with an actual tropical forest. The most amazing part is the way its environment reacts to characters and the player.

I would say animation goes to KZ2, and effects depend on the effects from each game (generally I'd say KZ2, but every once in a while you see one in crysis that just knocks you on your ass).

badz1495956d ago

in terms of realism and beauty, I can safely bet on Crysis having the upper hand! can you expect less from a game that only little amount of PCs can handle at its best when it was released? but being in development for a long enough time, Guerilla games have managed to produce a super high quality graphic in KZ2 and it somehow being compared to Crysis! that's a huge achievement for a console game and we should just admit that KZ2 looks stunning! I can't wait to play it this coming month!

Consoldtobots5956d ago

did anyone ever realize that maybe Crysis has SO MANY problems running properly is because its running on a PC instead of a PS3? Now before the PC and 360 fanboys go all postal on me, let me just say that people who look at hardware specifications (clock rates, memory size, etc) aren't taking into account the full picture of what console power means.
The important number here is TERAFLOP, that is how many floating point calculations the PS3 can produce per second.I believe at last count it was over 2.1 teraflops which is an INSANE amount of processing power.
THAT is what is needed to run next gen games properly, not super expensive graphics cards and memory. If the architecture is not there to support the data rate or needed processing then it's like putting a ferrari body on a corolla, sure it will look great from a distance but once you get in it's not what you were expecting.

Why do you think Crytek is looking for PS3 programmers?

360 man5956d ago

@ consoledabots

mate the gpus alone that u need to run crysis are are all running at 2 - 3 TERAFLOPS
coupled with the cpu power brings it to 4 and 5 TERAFLOPS

Technically (on a >great< rig), Crysis. But on 99% of PCs Crysis is nothing special and nothing like as detailed and gorgeous as online screens/videos will have you believe (including the crazy physics). But personally I prefer KZs art style and think it has more of a WOW factor, plus it looks the same for everyone and at least you know what your getting.

Sarcasm5956d ago

"WOW factor"

That's why I say Killzone 2 is a breed between Gears of War and Call of Duty 4 with Killzone 1's universe.

It has the WOW factor of Gears of War, the solid gameplay of COD, and the gritty war-torn amazing art design of Killzone.

Haters wanna hate, lovers wanna love.
I don't even want, none of the above. I want Killzone 2.
