Well it did have alot of classic visual novels in Japan at the time which are now finally available on Steam and Switch here in the west!

Most of whom I stumbled upon aren't based on any manga/anime. Besides, those are not foreign-friendly, considering the language barrier.

Kanon is a classic example. It came out in 1999 for PC and Dreamcast and just last week finally got an official English localization for Steam. Soon an English version for Switch will be available too.
